There are thousands of Costa and Starbucks coffee machines in places like WHS, making coffee without human being present, no price difference though. A double espresso is still 2.80 or thereabouts, just like in staffed outlets, the only difference being you ca enjoy your drink without having a brief conversation with a "highly trained and professional barista" who invariably pronounces espresso "expresso".

MaccyD which has the best coffee in the high street is a machine

I visit a friend in Stoke newington, a one bedroom flat on his road went on the market for £500k we both said it would not sell, it sold within a few weeks (not sure of the price) it has now had a to let sign on for 4 months the new owners want £2k per month they can find no tenants this must be a newbie, timing is everything

So why rent if can pay £2k a month.......only requirement now is 5% deposit.

.......how many employers will support their employees high rent requirements?......better off taking in as a salary/pension increase.;)

High street rents and businesses rates contribute more to pricing than wages.

Very true, driven many small businesses out of towns and cities to be replaced with chains and corporate same old same old....... thankfully there are still places here and overseas that have not treated individualism and difference with such indifference.......then you don't wonder, you know why some boring high streets are not worth visiting.....no character left in them.;)

Who do you think they expect to rent it to?;)

Hipsters but you are more likely to see a dinosaur than a hipster with £2k to spend per month in Stoke newington

Article on the departure

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/07/exodus-of-foreign-workers-a-threat-to-uk-recovery

halfway down

"Federation of Builders, said there was a “real danger that we’re going to have a major skill shortage”. He said: “We need 300,000 homes [a year],"

Curious guardian logic-surely 1.3M people leaving will help this problem ?? If 1.3m people have really left that has freed up 700k houses at the drop of a hat!

:)

From the article that's a "worst" case scenario 😂

And what the d-heads are wearing today, saw a bunch of school age teenagers with blue suits, nut crushing drainpipe trouse and baby sh*t coloured shoes.  Fashion has always been a bit redic but this really is scraping the  bottom of the barrel, almost exactly the same my army officer uncle when he wasn't in uniform we used to laugh at.

Britain loathes character and tries its best to stamp it out whenever it finds it, at least unless it brings in tourist money. It's not efficient and the modern British goal is to strip as much character out as possible to make way for as impersonal and bleakly efficient, utilitarian a world as possible. Apparently that's called "progress."

UK universities’ closeness to China poses risks, says Jo Johnson

The former universities minister Jo Johnsonhas warned of the “poorly understood” risks of increasingly close collaboration between UK universities and China.

A study led by Johnson identified a significant increase in funding from Chinaand collaboration with Chinese researchers over the past two decades, including in sensitive areas for national security and economic competition – such as automation, telecommunications and materials science – or in disciplines where collaboration may threaten freedom of speech.

Latest update figure for thos applying for settled status is up to 5.2M

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/eu-settlement-scheme-statistics#history

one wonders about the exodus, is it possible that the people who have flooded out are not in this figure? or perhaps they are and have temporarily left?

anyway the deadline it june 30th, i expect the figure will exceed 6M and then afterwards we will be inundated with reports in the guardian that "vulnerable" EU citizens are trying to access services and being denied as "no on had told them about the settlement scheme"

Latest statistical release here: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/865367/eu-settlement-scheme-statistics-january-2020.pdf

So far 3.1m applications received. The reporting period covers January 2020 so presumably there would have been a spike due to the UK leaving the EU at the end of that month.

Still no sign of any data supporting your claim earlier on the thread that the official statistics are 2-3-fold underestimating the number of EU citizens living in the UK.

There is now.

Still a few months left to register.

Okay another Huge increase im registrations, to 5.06M

or including eire citizens 5.4-5.5M an increase of 0.3M or so over the last figures in less than a month.

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/eu-settlement-scheme-statistics

This is getting crazy, clearly it is going to turn out, like many on here have said, that the EU citizen population of the UK is of the order 6-7M (possibly more) 2-3 times what were told in 2016

do we espect an apology from thos on here who called us paranoid etc?  no chance of that

Why does it matter?

a. the govt was lying through its teeth, this matters

b how on earth are we supposed to understand the impact of this kind of thing on services if we cannot quantify it?

c. If they are leaving, as remainers say, what was the true number!!!

it also means (allowing for illegals) it is quite possible the UK is the most populous country in western europe ffs, madness.

March 31.

1 month after your post.

5.30 million applications.

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/eu-settlement-scheme-statistics

Thats an increase of 240k.

Or, like Southampton suddenly appearing in 2 months.

There should be another update in the next few days, meanwhile the guardian is complaining about the backlog

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2021/may/10/eu-citizens-applying-for-settled-status-face-legal-limbo-due-to-backlog

although according to french Generals there might be a large wave of refugees from France soon, and not ones who are in transit this time...

Amazing. It was only supposed to be 3.6 million.

https://migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/briefings/eu-migration-to-and-from-the-uk/#:~:text=An estimated 3.6 million EU,5.5% of the UK population.&text=There were an estimated 3.7,to the EU settlement scheme.

I think France is finished as the manufacturing base has moved to China the only offering from France was tourism as coronovirus has put an end to that.

Australia should be cancelling its submarine contract with France soon it is a US$20b that is now at US$60b even the Aussies cannot afford that

The French are angry they are becoming poor

These are the amazing bits -

“We are deeply worried not only about those caught in the backlog but also people whose applications haven’t even been acknowledged by 1 July. Without a ‘certificate of application’ they are not seen as legal residents and could face crippling NHS treatment fees, for example,” said Maike Bohn, one of the founders of the campaign group the3million.

The are worried about having to actually pay for the public services. Either they pay for it, or the native Brits do. You can see why Brexit happened.

And they are still clinging to the 'the3million' tag.

Ms Bohn is German. She should know well what happens if you present yourself at a German hospital without a valid insurance form.

I also add -

Does this chart looks like it s stabiliest yet?

1.png

I think the UK should have just said -

OK, we have creating 3m places for EUerrs to remain.

Apply for them. When they are gone, they are gone.

Going by Boris' success beyond the red wall, a harsh migration stagey looks like a vote winner.

Lets assume that no new plans are going to be brought in deadlien is met.

How does Kier and the LibDems and the 3million going to think a tally of 6m plus a  couple of 2m more asking to to be allowed to stay as well?

migrants are building up in north Africa again too . 70,000 waiting to cross according to italian security services.

I do not know where this will end. Global warming and failed states combined with the internet that allows everyone on the planet to see how the other half lives, equals a desire to migrate that cannot be accommodated.

My gripe with the current UN migration is they turn up, declare asylum, then nothing.

No comeback on the country and tge leaders they are fleeing.

If international law is going to allow asylum then it needs to pursue the leaders of the country people are fleeing from.

Tge current system has bern so abused by economic migrants that tge whole lot risks being ditched.
