Well maybe, but all I was saying is the OECD figures are a valid comparison between countries.

It depends a bit. If one country, through policies, creates more discouraged workers, as an example, than another it may not be reflected in the statistics for the unemployment rate. So ideally you'd find a survey showing rates of discouragement for each country. For overall employment rates where high you could theoretically have the reverse case, for example pregnant mothers working until they give birth rather than three months before had policies been more generous.

It's better than government stats.

Mr Johnson said the UK has "taken back control of our money, our laws and our waters" after the Brexit.

The UK is "free to do things differently, and if necessary better, than our friends in the EU" in 2021.

What is UK going to do differently and better but wasn't allowed to do before?

How much can post-Brexit UK diverge from the EU?

jonb2, the vast majority of countries in the world are not in the EU.  Many of them are getting on just fine, often doing a lot better than us.

By strange coincidence that vast majority of countries in the world aren’t in Europe.

Reducing, hopefully to zero, unskilled immigration.

Absolutely.

BTW, Cornwall produces 90% of the world's crop.

No doubt you and your family are already packed, ready to get down there to do your bit as part of the GREAT BREXIT VISION ??

See Imhal's reply.

Luckily and nattily he supplied all the words I would have used in an even better order than I could manage.

Petrol goes up 15% immediately.

Uk breaks up within decade.

Political chaos starts immediately. Who leads? What happens?

Economic chaos takes longer.

And I bet we don't even Brexit. Scared and terrified by what they see, the public vote in anti Brexit parties at the GE.

Between bird flu, the ozone layer disappearing, Y2K, global warming, 2012 the end of the world and now Brexit I am honestly supprised that there are any of us left. Future generations will look back upon these times as a true test, similar to the downfall of Rome or the Black Death.

Will no one think of the daffodils? FFS get a grip.

Time to level up and look at automating the daffodil picking industry.

Take daffodils and apply it to every sector which has export potential - IOW, multiply by 1000s.

See the problem?

BTW, how do you automate eel farming? Just asking for a friend.

Indeed. The loss of some eel fams will have an impact that ripples through the ages. The event will be similar in magnitude to the Toba catastrophe.

Not sure how the exchequer will survive without the tax receipts from our crucial daffodil and eel farming sectors. Have you anymore relevant examples?

Time to get on the bus....

You see. Small mindedness at work again.

First. On the immigration of workers. Odysseus said nobody should be allowed in unless they are highly qualified. So the crops will rot. He suggest automation. No doubt he is working with Johnson and his band of visionaries to not only come up with a new, world-beating range of British AI crop-gatherers - but has plans to offer a generous leasing system so farmers can afford it.

Second. Take the daffodil and eel farmers likely bankruptcy, and multiply that by 1000s for SMEs up and down the country.

Make Britain England great again.

Nope.

It was a magic bus that got us into this mess.

No but the guy above you is busy fabricating an automatic daffodil picking machine in his garage.

Interestingly they may not be far away

https://www.engineering.com/DesignerEdge/DesignerEdgeArticles/ArticleID/17022/Robot-Arm-Picks-Herbs-and-Flowers.aspx

The netherlands already uses machines to pick cabbages and sprouts, only low productivity U.K. uses cheap labour.

Mass EEer have only been used for seasonal labour for less than 20 years.

How did the daffs, soft fruit and the veg crops get harvested before 2000?

He didn't talk about this EE workers doing jobs nobody else wants to do, he talked about the others unskilled immigration, EU immigrants who are stealing jobs here in the UK.

By better paid students used to do it - they got priced out so now have to fly to Austrailia picking their fruit and veg ;)

So I guess to compete on the global stage of places for students to pick fruit we will need to up the wages for picking said fruit.

Brilliant, we can all look forward to paying more for fruit while students travel to less interesting places. Win win?

How about some of those that lost their jobs through Covid get off their backsides rather than whinging for more benefits.
