I was in Long Melford last weekend (Suffolk village that has been 'gentrified') and I picked up a copy of their village magazine. I had a quiet bet with myself that first OOB would be opposing any new development. I turned to page one and laughed out loud because I wasn't disappointed. Straight into it. Apparently the major concern was that three (!) horses that graze the meadow on the edge of the village would lose their right to roam. ...of course the REAL concern is that of Tory voters worrying the value of their stupidly overpriced houses being affected by increased supply. Like all NIMBYs - it doesn't seem to dawn on them that if people in the past had taken the same view as them, their houses wouldn't exist in the first place - after all, everywhere was once a 'green field'. I just sent a link to my local Green Party councillor after he sent out a newsletter congratulating himself on helping to stop not one but two local housing developments. I have no idea why you think this is a Tory problem. All of the parties champion the NIMBY cause as even a cursory glance at local election literature will tell you. I would argue that 365 families having their dream of a home of their own dashed is not ‘Good News’. May I refer you to the attached old Conservative Party posters that celebrated housing provision. These posters from a more enlightened time are in stark contrast to the approached adopted today by the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. These posters are from a time when the need for housing was recognised and acted upon and homes provided such as your home. I would urge you to reflect upon this and reflect upon the needs of the whole community and not only the needs of the home owning wealthy."
