Staffsknot
They didn't shoot anything down they deliberately crashed into it over international waters. They tried dropping fuel and chaff on it - something China has done to Australian aircraft in Pacific. Everyone is allowed to fly over international waters uninhibited. rollover
US drone violates boundaries of airspace near the Crimean Peninsula A MQ-9 American drone was detected by Russian airspace control means near the Crimean Peninsula, it violated the boundaries of the area of the temporary airspace regime established during the special operation. The Russian airspace control systems have detected an American MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle flying over the Black Sea near the Crimean Peninsula in the direction of the state border of the Russian Federation," the ministry said. "The drone flew with its transponders off. According to the ministry, following abrupt maneuvering the drone "went into an unguided flight with a loss of altitude and collided with the water surface." The Russian aircraft did not use on-board weapons, did not come into contact with the unmanned aerial vehicle. tass

Well most of the Russian 'special operation' has been as effective as pissing in the wind so it wouldn't surprise the world, but technically impossible. Dumping fuel on an aircraft over international waters is however a violation of international safety agreements or are you claiming dodgy maintenance. rollover
Russian navy was trying to recover the US drone Audio recordings circulating on social media seem to indicate some kind of Russian recovery operation was under way. But this has not been confirmed. Clearly, Washington would not be happy if such sensitive surveillance technology fell into Russian hands. rollover
... doesn't realise where they are Berger was asked about the episode during an event at the National Press Club in Washington. 'This is probably my biggest worry,' he said. 'Both there and in the Pacific ... an aggressive Russia or China pilot or vessel captain or something gets too close, doesn't realise where they are, causes a collision. 'If the message is that they want to deter or dissuade us from flying, operating in international airspace over the Black Sea, then that message will fail,' said Kirby. 'We have been flying over that airspace consistently now for a year ... and we're going to continue to do that,' he said. 'We don't need to have some sort of check-in with the Russians before we fly in international airspace. There's no requirement to do that nor do we do it,' Kirby added. daily mail
