The Eagle
Turkey suspends European Convention on Human Rights in wake of coup Isn't that what the Tories had wanted to do too, and quite a few people here were in favour of it? Also France has suspended most civil rights since the Paris attacks and nobody seems to mind... While I'm not trying to defend Erdogan's actions (far from it) I simply want to point out what hypocrites our media and our politicians are. Goat
Isn't that what the Tories had wanted to do too, and quite a few people here were in favour of it? I'm fairly confident the Turks don't have a problem with ECHR being used to stop them deporting foreign criminals or some of the other more dubious areas it's been extended into . Also the Turks are demonstrating the futility of the whole ECHR, because the kind of tyrant who's going to start chopping bits off his opponents isn't going to give a damn about it so the only use for it is for meddling with reasonable choices made by democratic governments. interestrateripoff
Turkey Launches Investigation Of "Losers" Who Claim Coup Was A Hoax Turkish prosecutors have begun investigating people who claim that Turkey's coup attempt was a hoax carried out by the government, the country’s justice minister said Sunday, reflecting a farcical crackdown on free speech. “Just look at the people who are saying on social media that this was theater, public prosecutors are already investigating them. Most of them are losers who think it is an honor to die for Fethullah Gulen’s command,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said.
copydude
Turkey adds 42 journalists to those facing arrest and detention. Amnesty International says: Turkish police in Ankara and Istanbul are holding detainees in stress positions for up to 48 hours, denying them food, water and medical treatment, and verbally abusing and threatening them. In the worst cases some have been subjected to severe beatings and torture, including rape. It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held
davidg
> Isn't that what the Tories had wanted to do too, and quite a few people here were in favour of it? I can't speak for all Tories but the party position was to get rid of the human rights act, not to suspend the EConventionHR. Other countries haven't incorporated the ECHR directly into their laws but have left the ECourtHR as the final court of appeal. > Also France has suspended most civil rights since the Paris attacks and nobody seems to mind... no it hasn't. The attempt to overthrow Erdogan has turbo-charged efforts to restore ties between Turkey and Russia that were already under way after the crisis over the warplane. I bet they compare notes about how great it must have been to have the power that their mutual idol Stalin used to have. If Trump gets elected there are going to be huge strains on the unity of NATO. Not good. Western European governments will adapt. Their regressive leftie governments are on the wane anyway. Eastern European EU countries will welcome him.
