Turkey suspends European Convention on Human Rights in wake of coup

Isn't that what the Tories had wanted to do too, and quite a few people here were in favour of it?

Also France has suspended most civil rights since the Paris attacks and nobody seems to mind...

While I'm not trying to defend Erdogan's actions (far from it) I simply want to point out what hypocrites our media and our politicians are.

Right so

state of emengency declared for 3 months

human rights convention suspended

There should be a Foreign office announcement along lines of

"Warns against all but essential travel" etc

Are holidaymakers still heading out there?

and with what imsurance cover in place?

Well if Erdogan starts mass executions even you would admit he's crossed rather a different line.

Cameron wanted to replace it with a UK bill of rights - which he never got round to so left the HRA in place

Can't comment about France

There will be uproar!....the EU is totally opposed to the death penalty

Funny that. They turn a blind eye to extraordinary rendition, torture and ethnic cleansing, mass corruption etc.

Take a look at Eastern and Southern Europe and tell me what 'European Values' are.

I'm fairly confident the Turks don't have a problem with ECHR being used to stop them deporting foreign criminals or some of the other more dubious areas it's been extended into .

Also the Turks are demonstrating the futility of the whole ECHR, because the kind of tyrant who's going to start chopping bits off his opponents isn't going to give a damn about it so the only use for it is for meddling with reasonable choices made by democratic governments.

Turkey Launches Investigation Of "Losers" Who Claim Coup Was A Hoax
erdogan%20supporters.jpg

Turkish prosecutors have begun investigating people who claim that Turkey's coup attempt was a hoax carried out by the government, the country’s justice minister said Sunday, reflecting a farcical crackdown on free speech. “Just look at the people who are saying on social media that this was theater, public prosecutors are already investigating them. Most of them are losers who think it is an honor to die for Fethullah Gulen’s command,” Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said.

Turkey adds 42 journalists to those facing arrest and detention.

Amnesty International says:

Turkish police in Ankara and Istanbul are holding detainees in stress positions for up to 48 hours, denying them food, water and medical treatment, and verbally abusing and threatening them. In the worst cases some have been subjected to severe beatings and torture, including rape.

It is absolutely imperative that the Turkish authorities halt these abhorrent practices and allow international monitors to visit all these detainees in the places they are being held

I can't speak for all Tories but the party position was to get rid of the human rights act, not to suspend the EConventionHR. Other countries haven't incorporated the ECHR directly into their laws but have left the ECourtHR as the final court of appeal.

no it hasn't.

Did he do this when he said 'losers'?

Erdogan Mend Ties as Post-Coup Turkey Turns to Russia

Turkey and Russia will seek to speed up the repair of frayed relations when Recep Tayyip Erdogan meets Vladimir Putin for talks in St. Petersburg next month in the wake of the failed military coup against the Turkish president. The attempt to overthrow Erdogan has turbo-charged efforts to restore ties between Turkey and Russia that were already under way after the crisis over the warplane. The rapprochement may even lead to a political realignment in the region. Turkey received “unconditional support” from Russia over the coup attempt.

If Trump gets elected there are going to be huge strains on the unity of NATO. Not good.

I bet they compare notes about how great it must have been to have the power that their mutual idol Stalin used to have.

Western European governments will adapt. Their regressive leftie governments are on the wane anyway. Eastern European EU countries will welcome him. Especially if Erdogan and Putin get chummy.

Erdogan Files Criminal Charges Against Head Of Research At Turkish Bank For Writing Displeasing Report
ulker%20teaser.jpg

Having purged virtually all of his domestic political enemies, it will probably not come as a surprise the head of research as well as the chief strategist at one of Turkey’s largest brokerages was stripped of his professional license and is facing criminal charges over a report analyzing the impact of the July 15 coup attempt, which Erdogan has found "insulting."

if trump gets elected there will certainly be strains on the franco german part of nato that is seeking to usurp the USA.

trump frankly will have no interest in coming to liberate them again.
