The Telegraph expects their readers are incredibly stupid when it prints stuff like "Leftist policies have left New Zealand's housing market on the brink of disaster" while the current Conservative Government has spent 12 years boosting up our own UK housing market.

And the previous Labour government spend 13 years fuelling it too - a 400 per cent rise in house prices and a ten fold rise in buy to let and fewer council homes built in one year than even Mrs Thatcher managed in one (and she wasn't even trying). Back in 1996 the average price of a house in London was about £60k - and an average person on an average wage could afford to buy one - not so a decade layer.

I am perfectly willing to acknowledge the failures of governments for the last 25 years on housing - Labour and Tory.

I just don't see that repeating the Tory Labour rinse and repeat duopoly is going to change much - because frankly there isn't much difference policy wise between Blairites Hunt and Reeves. Not sure if there is a party that is going to deliver cheaper housing - but it won't be Labour or Tory if they can do anything to stop it.

She's 42, cut her teeth under Blair , did a copy and paste of New Labour for New Zealand and it's ended up at the same landfill.

In what way was any of that 'progressive'? She had the power to not go down that route but people seem to be deliberately thick by not acknowledging these so called 'progressive' parties/leaders all seem to prefer to gas light the working classes into financialising their own homes.

The financialisation of the NZ economy began long before Ardern arrived promising to reverse it. Her triumphant defiance of the neoliberal orthodoxy re. Covid will be her enduring legacy.

You had a chance to vote for change. You won't be given another.

The Conservative party today is so far to the Left compared to what it was, say, 30 years ago that it makes the Atlee government look positively Right wing.

Cowardly journalism: she's leaving her job, so NOW it's safe to attack her.  They should have been writing these kinds of articles years ago.

That's a good point - she was pretty much the darling of all mainstream media (and still is for a lot of them) but only now she's out of power, some are taking shots.

Crazy 'Liberal' authoritarians like her don't like to give up the reigns of power, so I do have to wonder what is behind her resignation.  Mere electoral unpopularity isn't enough - that lot don't give a flying fig about what the electorate think and rely on a pliant media to lie to the public  and 'whatever means necessary' in terms of behind the scenes manipulation, to stay in power.

Either she is being lined up for a big role with a three-letter NGO or there is some devastatingly bad info about her about to come to light and this is damage control in advance.

As for the NZ housing market - like just about every Western nation it has been the mainstay of perceived economic health for decades now.  Accordingly, governments of whatever superficial hue will make it a priority to pump the market.  I guess its convenient to blame it on the last leader but the fact is that there is an unhealthy reliance on expensive houses to support economic activity, in the absence of a real, productive economy.

Just like Blair, before the financial crisis hit.

In that respect, they're both pretty savvy.

Blair of course having done very well for himself since (collecting the kickbacks) and still polluting the political sphere with his latest pronouncements for vaccine databases.

I wouldn't put it past him to pop up in a Labour adminstration in some sort of powerful position.

Expect Jacinda to do the same sort self-enriching thing. Doing all the international jet-setting and pontificating, etc. Land some cushy 'international' role for a few years that will achieve nothing, like Blair did with his supposed middle east peace envoy nonsense.

Her 'jumping ship' suddenly the other week came as no surprise. I recall saying she would do as much to a friend a year ago - who thought she would be around as PM for ages.

When she talked about not having enough 'in the tank' to continue the job... that's just her recognising there's various storms coming and she can't be ars*d to deal with it.  Nobody relinquishes the reins of power like that IF the road ahead is comfortable and calm.

Any successor who willingly grabs the reins of power from such an exiting leader is someone whose ego is clearly bigger than their brains.

I often wonder if Boris acted in a way to expedite his own departure seeing what was coming down the tracks.
He’ll be back one day.

Can't see it happening.  Not as PM.

Never say never of course, but I think there's more chance of the second coming of Christ than him being PM ever again.

I think he will be back in 12 months.

If not that's it for him as to be desperate enough to want him back it will be to save seats in an election with as little time to find new scandals as possible.

Once they loose they will have to go to the right culture war to get any traction with labour in the centre.

Not a big fan of of that kind of change. Thank God we won't be given another chance too, horrible thought.

What you're saying doesn't make any sense. The current free market/free trade model is why you're forking out half of your income every month to live in a dog kennel next to a railway line.

We used to be able to do better fifty years ago. Even eighty years ago!

I'd rather spend half of my income and live in a dog kennel next to a railway line that live in that type of country. In fact, I'd go even further and utter the classic line, better dead than red!

Thankfully, my flag only has a little red in it, a far lower percentage than those photos of Corbs (he/him), and I spend c5% of my take home on accomodation. That's definitely the outcome I'd prefer.

House prices in general? Yes, that is not in a good position and can be improved and worked towards without any input from him (/he).

Strange that it doesn't remind you that the Tories have been in power 13 years and do zip to sort it. Yes very strange indeed.

How were the Tories going to reverse HPI or even put the lid back on the Genie bottle in 2010 after the BOE were made independent? Ken Clark would never have done what Brown did, which effectively brought about the end of "cheap" housing in the UK forever. I personally knew 21 year old graduates buying their first homes in the Greater London area back in 1996.

You are right, but this is in the context of The Telegraph. As she only mildly takes from the poor to give to the rich, she is hard left by modern standards.
