fellow
Spain to axe ‘golden visa’ scheme in blow to British expats https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/property/second-homes/spain-to-axe-golden-visa-scheme-british-expats/ Quote Spain is planning to axe a “golden visa” scheme that grants residency to foreign property buyers in a blow to British expats. The programme allows non-EU citizens investing at least €500,000 (£429,000) in Spanish real estate to live and work in the country for three years. However, Spain’s prime minister Pedro Sanchez told reporters on Monday that the scheme would be scrapped to make access to affordable housing for Spaniards “a right instead of a speculative business”. He said: “Today, 94 out of every 100 such visas are linked to real estate investment… in major cities like Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Alicante, Valencia or Palma de Mallorca that are facing a highly stressed market and where it’s almost impossible to find decent housing for those who already live, work and pay their taxes there. ”He added that the government would launch the process to eliminate the scheme in Tuesday’s weekly cabinet meeting after studying a report submitted by the housing ministry. Spain introduced its golden visa programme in September 2013 to encourage wealthy foreigners to invest in real estate to boost the Spanish economy in the wake of the financial crisis. winkie
Good, not only Brits but many Chinese and other nationalities benefited from it.......will still need to be means tested and checks on history to get a nlv visa if don't have an EU member states passport, harder more red tape and more costly if have intentions to work......no riff raff required......what we voted for. https://myspainvisa.com/non-lucrative-visa-spain/

NoHPCinTheUK
Spain in an interesting case-study. The country is literally booming, doing better than the rest of the EU members. Recent reports are showing very high levels of investments in the manufacturing and service sector. The country also has got a very large pool of potential immigrants from south america who already speak the local language, have similar culture and who pray god on Sundays and not Fridays. Agree putting own people first, that must be a good thing, money shouldn't buy anything at the detriment to own people, with no questions asked......also not a case of not wanting the UK to do badly, more wanting all of the EU to do well, stronger together. https://blog.visitacostadelsol.com/en/google-malaga

You sum it up nicely. But not in the way you think. The rich are getting richer. Home prices on certain areas at, or above UK levels. The "pool of immigrants" is causing hell in the jobs market, p"ss poor wages and treatment of job seekers and workers.

Plus unlike those illegally crossing the US border, they're generally wealthier and better educated. Sub Saharan African and Asian immigrant numbers are relatively small in Spain because the social benefits aren't that great and they just can't compete with half a billion fluent Spanish speakers

Ah but don't tell the remainers this. They still seem absolutely enthralled to the idea of this ever migrating 'pool of immigrants' in this open border world where you can offer them p1ss poor returns in their labour values and allows it to undermine national worker rights. On a similar subject my partner had to ring the police two days ago to report modern slavery. A east European chap visited her in a&e where he'd been forced to work in a car wash located in the car park of a well known supermarket chain for the past 2/3 years. He gave her permission to contact the police (which she has to do) once he'd manage to flee the country. but yeah.......no flaws to this freedom of movement is there. MARTINX9
Apparently a whopping 60 Brits a year have taken advantage of this scheme since it was introduced in 2021. The number of UK tourists to Spain in 2023 was nearly 13.8 million. Just another Telegraph click bait story. Next please...

NoHPCinTheUK
Ahahhahaha crazy how people here still think that immigration keeps wages down. What has been pissing on our wages for +20 plus years was the 0 growth on productivity of UK plc, not immigrants. After the war millions came from the colonies and wages went up beacuse the eocnomy still worked and produced something worth selling. That's not stopped US cities being swamped with glorified sex trade slaves for example High immigration brings with it warts and all, not just this nonsense concept all we get are highly trained professionals. In fact the inverse tends to be true and our western middle/upper class in their bubbles aren't up to this coping with this reality. It's also those with the least to lose back home or the most exploited are the most motivated to migrate. Almost none of the Latin Americans in SPain are illegal, they don't need to be and couldn't anyway unless they overstayed a visa, which means they're on the system Edited April 9 by PropertyMania
