Corruption, corruption, corruption ...

Top Ukraine defense official held over multi-million fraud

Police have arrested a senior Ukrainian defense ministry official suspected of embezzling 36 million euros for the purchase of much-needed artillery shells. Prosecutors said the official, had developed a system under which he bought artillery shells at inflated prices.

Ukraine has had to deal with a series of corruption scandals in recent months, including several others within the defense ministry.

Ukraine says it downed three Russian Su-34 warplanes on Friday

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67809239

"Ukraine's military says it shot down three Russian fighter jets on Friday in the south of the country.

Three Su-34 fighter bombers were shot down over Kherson region, the Ukrainian air force announced.

President Volodymr Zelensky thanked the servicemen who had downed the planes, saying the incident had occurred in war-torn Kherson Region.

Moscow has not commented on the claims, but influential Russian bloggers have reported losses"

Apparently due to Ukraine moving one of their Patriot missile defense systems closer to the Kherson front line.

Trolls are working overtime again.

Ask @DiggerUK when he supposedly did officer training...

Because I'd want the taxpayer money back based on some of his basic elementary nonsense posts that a simple UOTC cadet wouldn't get wrong.

So either that's made up or you didn't pay attention or you were a STAB in the Adj in the 70s on a nice & dry port bottle pushing commissioning course.

So like to elaborate? Or shall we just notch it up to doubtful fiction?

Its strange as there have been a few people that have claimed the same in accounts of a different name only to run off or get themselves banned. Their stories unravelled rapidly too.

Interesting video that thanks. And off course really good news - several sources referencing a deliberate 'trap' rather than some kine of bizarre luck.  I'm also wondering if this points to the possibility of Ukraine building up enough deterrence to prevent future invasions.

Bad news for Russia, their bombers are getting shot down miles from the front.  Let’s face it, it’s not going well.  But don’t worry, PooTin still has human wave tactics at his disposal, hopefully Ukraine has enough ammo to get them all.

This is a prime example, how to shoot yourself into the foot ...

Borrell was reviewing the current state of the European Union project at the turn of a year caught between two wars, one in Ukraine and another in Gaza.

He said both conflicts threatened the future of the bloc, and in the case of Ukraine he said he feared defeat unless there was a rapid change of course. He said he saw no sign that the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, was willing to stop, or even settle for an agreement that let Russia retain eastern Ukraine.

On Gaza he said Hamas was not just a military force but an idea – and, as such, it could only be defeated by better ideas, not bombs alone.

European parliamentary elections in June could be as fateful as the US presidential race, the EU foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has warned, saying he believes voters’ fear of the unknown may lead them to back rightwing populist parties.

“I am afraid of fear, I am afraid Europeans vote because they are afraid. It’s scientifically proven that fear in the face of the unknown and uncertainty generates a hormone that calls for a security response. This is a fact,” Borrell told the Guardian.

Josep Borrell also warned that the European Union’s existence was at stake in Ukraine.

“Putin cannot be satisfied with a piece of Ukraine and to let the rest of Ukraine belong to the European Union, but he cannot be satisfied with a limited territorial victory. He will not give up the war, especially not before the American election, which may present him with a much more favourable scenario. So we must prepare for a conflict of high intensity for a long time,” Borrell said.

“Putin has decided to continue the war until the final victory,” he said.

Every one start cutting losses, when it comes to Ukraine, and for the future that awaits the country is left to fight on its own

Ukraine will suffer ‘insane’ losses if US stops aid, warn frontline troops

Ukraine’s military fears Vladimir Putin’s forces could break through its defensive lines and secure victory for Russia within days if the US does not commit to more aid.

There is a growing sense of alarm among Ukraine’s frontline forces at dwindling supplies of arms and ammunition and signs that the commitment of international partners is faltering, according to multiple senior Ukrainian military officials.

Mr Putin’s forces appear better prepared for the second winter of their invasion compared to Ukraine, which expended a great deal of effort and resources this summer.

Barabash says the fighting in Avdiivka is “very hot right now”, and that Ukraine urgently needs more supplies if it is to hold onto the town, never mind win the war as a whole. “The enemy is pressing from almost 16 directions precisely along the Avdiivka defence line. If US aid comes to a halt, “The line of defence may change and it will lead to insane losses, as it was at the beginning of a full-scale war,” he says.

A bit more detail about the SU-34 ambush here:

https://euromaidanpress.com/2023/12/23/frontline-report-ukraine-moves-patriot-system-closer-to-frontline-resulting-in-three-russian-aircraft-downed/

Ukrainian and Russian sources reported that Russian forces primarily relied on air-dropped bombs against Ukrainian bridgeheads on the eastern bank of the river. Ground operations on the islands proved almost suicidal for the Russians, as they faced heavy fire from tanks, mortars, and artillery on the higher western bank. Despite their large number, the Russian bombs had low accuracy and efficiency.
To counter the increased frequency of Russian airstrikes, some dropping up to 100 bombs a day, the Ukrainian command sought a solution to deter these attacks. The challenge was significant, as the bombs were being dropped from around 50 km away, out of range of regular air defenses like the “Buk-M1.”
Fortunately, the high altitudes at which the Russians operated, exceeding 12 kilometers, did not hinder radar detection and tracking. Ukraine’s possession of several Patriot air defense systems, effective up to 160 km and capable of intercepting targets at high altitudes, provided a strategic advantage. By positioning a launcher 100 km from the frontline, Ukrainian forces could still reach the Russian aircraft.
A recent Russian airstrike attempt on Krynky with three Su-34 aircraft, each capable of dropping 18 bombs, ended disastrously. Before the Russian jets could release their bombs, their warning radars signaled imminent targeting. Lacking time to escape, all three fighter bombers were destroyed, with one crew surviving and others not.
Russian analysts later suggested that Ukrainians had kept their Patriot radars inactive on purpose. They theorized that Ukrainians used a small, short-range radar near the frontline, activating their powerful Patriot radar only after trapping the Russian jets. This tactical approach led to the successful ambush, which Russian analysts deemed inevitable given the extensive use of aviation in the Kherson region.

Further complicating the situation for Russian forces, a Ukrainian fighter reported that the Russian command anticipated such attacks and attempted to counter them by targeting Ukrainian postal infrastructure, mistakenly believing Patriot systems were disguised as postal service trucks. Unfortunately for Russians, the actual Patriot systems remained unscathed.

This seems to have been a clever use of the Patriot missile system.

It sounds like the UK is involved ...

U.K. Defense Minister Grant Shapps has told the Sunday Times "So we can literally not afford not to win this war."

"If we allow Putin to win this war by dragging it out, and he somehow wins it by exhausting everybody else, then we will suffer the consequences. And the consequences would be incredibly severe for Europe, for Britain, for the world," Shapps said.

Several western systems are networked. This means targeting information can come from many sources, such as aircraft. The missiles themselves have active radar seeker so once they are close they can guide themselves.

Networking is the next big thing. Poland is the first customer for the US Integrated Battle Management System. Any radar/any efector. For instance a F-35 gave targeting to a M1 Abrahams tank which shot down a cruise missiles. HIMARS firing anti aircraft missiles, etc.

Rishi Sunak urged to stop ‘dithering’ over Ukraine funding

The UK Government has still not announced how much support Ukraine will be given in 2024. Government insiders have indicated an announcement on the 2024 figure is likely to be made at least by the Budget, which is expected to be held in March.

These politicians are always slow to move, they are looking at the next election. However, there is a whole backstory where ammo, money, tanks, artillery and jets are moving to Ukraine, not to mention Russki cooking missiles.

While the US, the EU, the UK and others are hesitant to send more money to Ukraine ...

Russian has the upper hand in arms race with the West

Russia has the upper hand in weapons production over the West and intends to keep the rate of growth high, after both the West and Russia ramped up arms production for the Ukraine war.

Ukraine and its Western backers ramped up arms production in an attempt to defeat Russian forces on the battlefields of Ukraine. Russia also hiked production but says the West is to blame for the war.

Manturov said that the volume of state defence orders in 2023 has doubled over the prior year, with production of "certain weapons" rising ten-fold. "I don't want to boast, but I can say that we began to gain and picked up the pace of production earlier than Western countries."
