David Cameron is prepared to back Peter Mandelson for a major international job as the next director general of the World Trade Organisation, raising the prospect of a fourth comeback by the man once known as the Prince of Darkness.

In a sign of the prime minister's high regard for Labour's last business secretary, government sources indicated that Mandelson was seen in Downing Street as a strong candidate to succeed Pascal Lamy, who is to stand down as the WTO director general next year.

"Peter Mandelson is a strong candidate for an international job," one government source said of Britain's former European trade commissioner. "The director general of the WTO, which will become available next year, is an obvious position. We are sure that Peter Mandelson would have a lot to offer."

The interest in Mandelson may be seen in Labour circles as troublemaking by the coalition, which is rubbishing Gordon Brown's unofficial campaign to fill the vacant position of managing director of the International Monetary Fund after the resignation of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. The former prime minister made a speech in South Africa calling on rich western countries to meet their pledges to fund education for the world's poor.

Mandelson has been ruled out by Britain as a possible IMF head because he is does not have the necessary qualifications as a former finance minister or a former central bank governor. "Peter Mandelson does not have enough credibility for the IMF," the government source said. <-- damn right

But the government does believe he would be well placed to succeed Lamy, Mandelson's French predecessor as EU trade commissioner. Lamy is a highly respected figure, though Cameron has been highly critical of the WTO's failure to complete the Doha trade round.

One government source laughed off Brown's campaign. "What a clever idea to launch a campaign for the IMF with a speech calling for action in an area that is the responsibility of the World Bank. Bob Zoellick [the US president of the World Bank] will be really impressed. The IMF is rather more focused on keeping the world financial system afloat."

Government sources believe they will not need to lobby against Brown during next week's state visit to Britain by Barack Obama and at the G8 summit in France on Thursday and Friday because the former prime minister enjoys negligible support.

One government source said: "Gordon Brown hasn't even bothered to make contact with us. We do not need to say what we think – even if we threw our weight behind him he would not stand a hope in hell. It is all a bit sad."

Britain is expected to agree with Wolfgang Schäuble, the German finance minister, who has called for the EU to agree on a candidate from a eurozone member. The EU, which has traditionally provided a candidate to run the IMF while a US figure runs the World Bank, controls 32.07% of the IMF voting rights.

Christine Lagarde, the French finance minister, is the current eurozone frontrunner. But Britain expects that a strong German candidate, possibly the former Bundesbank governor Axel Weber, could emerge.

Goddamn corrupt Britain. Can't we get some new blood into the system instead of this perpetual parade of toffee nosed vampire sycophants?

Mandelson's a talented bloke

At what - 'Curious' dealings?

(1) Mandelson had bought a home in Notting Hill in 1996 with the assistance of an interest-free loan of £373,000 from Geoffrey Robinson, a millionaire Labour MP who was also in the Government, but was subject to an inquiry into his business dealings by Mandelson's department.

(2) On 24 January 2001, Mandelson resigned from the Government for a second time following accusations of using his position to influence a passport application.

(3) In October 2008, Mandelson was reported to have maintained private contacts over several years with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, most recently on holiday in August 2008 on Deripaska's yacht at Taverna Agni on the Greek island of Corfu.

(4) In 1999 and 2009, Mandelson was an invited guest of the Bilderberg Group and attended the annual conferences.

(5) During the Parliamentary expenses scandal of 2009, the Daily Telegraph raised questions about the timing of Mandelson’s second home allowance claim, dating from 2004, saying, "Lord Mandelson billed the taxpayer for almost £3,000 of work on his constituency home in Hartlepool less than a week after announcing his decision to stand down as an MP." Mandelson said in a statement, "The work done was necessary maintenance. All claims made were reasonable and submitted consistent with Parliamentary rules.

I've always found it perverse that he managed to remain in politics after the passport scandal. He must have been sleeping with Tony Blair; this would make sense if you've even seen Cheri Blair. He should have been imprisoned but there's no justice in Britain.

Cameron shows extremely poor judgment and just confirms how badly the British are government. It's pathetic.

Having seen Lady McBlair that makes perfect sense. I'd pick Mandelscum over her.

As for the Boy Cameron and his merry band:

Twelve voices were shouting in anger, and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I've no idea about his talents, but surely he represents the lowest kind of self interested spiverry. Maube that's all politics ever really is, though.

2003 http://news.bbc.co.u...ics/2999219.stm

Downing Street has attacked Labour MP Tam Dalyell after he complained of a "cabal of Jewish advisers" unduly influencing Tony Blair.

Mr Dalyell made the remarks in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, identifying Lord Levy, Tony Blair's Middle East envoy, Peter Mandelson, whose father is Jewish, and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who has Jewish ancestry, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The MP for Linlithgow is a consistent maverick who has already been criticised for "unpatriotic" remarks over the war in Iraq

Tam Dalyell was right about the war in Iraq

My constituency Labour party has just voted to recommend that Tony Blair reconsider his position as party leader because he gave British backing to a war against Iraq without clearly expressed support from the UN. I agree with this motion. I also believe that since Mr Blair is going ahead with his support for a US attack without unambiguous UN authorisation, he should be branded as a war criminal and sent to The Hague.

I have served in the House of Commons as a Labour member for 41 years, and I would never have dreamed of saying this about any one of my previous leaders. But Blair is a man who has disdain for both the House of Commons and international law.

This is a grave thing to say about my leader. But it is far less serious than the results of a war that could set western Christendom against Islam.

Maverick or deliberate 'put down' by the Jews & their shills (running the show) trying to kick-off WW3?

Keep saying it. It doesn't matter who you vote for it makes virtually no difference. Different brand, same dog meat.

On this spin of the wheel we have ... Blue Labour (or Red Conservatives).

UK and US are corporate/fascist states when the surface is scratched. They don't even bother to disguise the fact these days.

Only when it will be too late, will the British electorate wake up and realise that the main three are simply not up to the job. And I say that as an ex soldier and a once life long supporter of the Conservatives.

Odious man.

I admire David Camerons honesty.

Mandelson represents the machiavellian, corrupt, manipulative, British politician perfectly.

His sins are celebrated.

Friend and defender of the Rothschilds. Uses their yacht. Defends the indefendable.

Attempts to implement policies, leading to destruction of internet liberties.

Pals with the Gaddafi's. [The next thing you know the Lockerbie bomber walks free.]

While serving as a European trade commissioner, he accepts private flights and freebie holidays from a Russian aluminium baron then, purely coincidentally, lowers import tariffs on Russian aluminium.

After being brought back into government by Gordon Brown, he suppresses a report into Brown using taxpayers' money to bail out what we used to call British Leyland, just days before the 2005 General Election, in a cynical attempt to buy votes in key Midlands marginals.

Ties with Common Purpose.

Resigned because of alleged £400,000 Mortage fraud, then re-appointed, only to resign again, because of the cash for passports slime.

And whilst these are completely unsubstantiated, there were Internet Rumours of involvement with under age brazilian rent boys. Also, Operation Ore, where thousands of people who had accessed paedophlia websites, were tracked.

Two Labour MP's were suspects. But their identity was blocked by Blair.

I'm not suggesting it was Mandelson, but there are websites who have suggested this.

Well Done Cameron.

Personally I'll never forget him walking out of the failed £900,000,000 millenium dome, irate, babbling on about the trouble with the british people, is that they have no vision....

Not to mention as an architect of the 'Neo-Corporatists' or New Fascists, he seems to fit in with the tories perfectly?

Gives you a big clue as to the direction we are headed.
