moonriver
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=ako1SQJd_VSM Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- More than 1,000 investment bankers have quit Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc to join rival firms since the government began clamping down on bonuses this year, the Sunday Times reported, citing unidentified banking sources. While traders and corporate financiers accounted for less than 5 percent of staff in the bank’s investment division, they are estimated to have earned between 600 million pounds to 700 million pounds last year, or nearly 8 percent of its 2008 income, according to the Times. RBS is a recipient of the government’s bank bailout. The RBS board wants to increase the bonus pool at the investment bank by at least 50 percent to 1.5 billion pounds to encourage staff to stay, the newspaper reported. So 5% of the staff earnt 8% of its 2008 income, a mere 600 to 700 million pounds. A good use of our tax money, is it not?

Let them go, if its too detrimental they can always be re-hired. Few people are irreplaceable.
hilltop
Anyone seen the jobs advertised anywhere? Perhaps in 'Tatler'? I am available for a straight salary package and do not require a subscription to Spearmint Rhino. ( Iwould not know where to but myself.) R K
So around £600k each? During 6 months of the biggest period of liquidity support and free money to the banksters in our lifetimes? They don't do much for their business if that's the case, given the horrendous capital and fixed costs, hundreds of billions of borrowed taxpayers cash and guarantees and so on. And these are the top 5%? If that's all they're good for I'd suggest the IB division isn't worth keeping open at all. Sell it off or close it down and sack them all and give us our capital back. tinker
Good riddance. However, if they have jumped ship, they will have merely spread the cancer. Just how did the get their claws so deeply into the country? Does moving (electronic) money from one building to another whilst skimming off the top justify their omnipotence. cybernoid
Amusing to watch you all applaud as the only industry left in the uk closes up shop. No-one held a gun to the head of those borrowing the money they had no chance of repaying. The UKs problem is the ratio of stupid to smart people. Morally ambiguous perhaps, but these are smart people. And they're going. You want to drown in a poverty stricken land of chav you be my guest, anyone with any sense is off. Your innocence is charming. Good to see there are those who still believe in pixies and elves. Yes, lets pay the IBs even more, they've done such a great job so far. slurms mackenzie
Amusing to watch you all applaud as the only industry left in the uk closes up shop. So let me get this straight, you're honestly claiming that this industry which has brought us billions of pounds worth of debt is the only industry in the uk. You're telling me that we have no aviation industry, no oil industry, pharms, games? Christ on a ******in bike.

Whats the deal, we're merely saying the people who are leaving can be replaced. Their figures don't seem that spectacular, why should we be held to ransom, if it all goes tits up the rats will come back for the right amount of money anyway. No one is indispensable, anyone can be replaced...I would imagine there are many young, bright and intelligent people that would welcome an opportunity to do the job at half the price and make twice the money.
