MPs and others might moan about it, but most would do exactly the same as Saint Bono. Miliband's trust fund is an obvious example.

Politicians make the tax code so complicated they can simultaneously ensure poor people get whacked and those with something worth protecting pay very little.

That said, it's a measure of the silliness that the Dutch Antillies plays a part in an Irish band's tax affairs. Bono's comments suggest the tax competitiveness of Eire is not all it's cracked up to be otherwise why be putting money elsewhere?

At least it gives Bob another appeal to look forward to, this time the starving kids will be closer to home.

It it were not for the Irish tax syastem, I would still be stuck in the skanky suburbs of Dover and the work I now undertake would be shoveled of to our Bangalore office.

Ultimatley large US companies need a low cost base in Europe to base their European service sector and manufacturing. The UK is too expensive and does not provide the right facilities, infrastructure or skilled staff outside of London, and London is too expensive.

It would not be difficult or hard to get those US companies to move from Ireland to the UK, but I suspect that there is a secret handshake and brown envelopes exchanged to keep the work in Ireland otherwise Ireland would really become Greece and people would soon escape over the border, so in a way it's in the UK's benefit to give jobs to Ireland.

Stuff the Irish Government and their taxes -- they are only paying off the bankers for their mistakes.

Tax avoidance is a moral duty.

Wherebee - you are a cranky lefty!!!! :P

LOL I doubt it! I was called a fascist just last week by someone! I am all for legal tax minimisation.

What I am is anti hypocrite....i.e. someone who for years has called for more government,, i.e. taxpayers money - to be spent on lefty stuff decides that it's not his own money that should be given to the deserving, but the money taken from bus drivers and waiters.

I'd avoid tax as well if I was loaded, though I might consider totting up how much I was saving with my schemes and spending that on things I considered to be more worthy than whatever lunacy the government would spend the tax on.

Before anyone says coke and huas that's not what I had in mind. ;)

This link implies that Bono has gone through a road to Damascas conversion in recent times as to where his politics lie.

They're all leftists 'til they start making money! The punk crowd had noticably fewer scruples than their predecessors about being corporate shills. I think Bono went from Che Guevara to Rupert Murdoch in the space of a single royalty cheque.

Ah, I see. Classic case of me misreading your post.

On the vein of this discussion, I found this video quite good....

It's a bit Off-Topic, but I think it applies to Ireland and the UK to some degree.

21m:

many wealthy people and corporations use their money to buy rules that favor their position; tax, anti-trust, IP laws, the point is with large size and money goes a great deal of political power and the more concentrated the wealth is at the top, the more susceptible you are to this corruption.

22m30s:

nobody should expect equality of income. the real problem is that we don't have equality of opportunity: schools available to the poor are not as good as those available to wealthy. Tax laws are skewed to disadvantage the poor, etc. ....

...I'm no lefty but why should I subsidise anybody, who is cheating the system and me...likewise for the Citizens of other countries who cheat on their own people....

The problem is it wouldn't matter if all schools were equal, its not about the school but where all the rich kids go. The Sky series on Harrow illustrates this perfectly. The programme is as annoying as Question time, on one you see the smug little pricks before they grow up and on the other you see the smug little pricks after they grow up.

This is why I respect J K Rowling, she has never tried to avoid any tax, paid something like £350 million quids worth so far.

She's a socialist who stuck to her beliefs, something incredibly rare I believe.

I steadfastly refuse to pay any tax at all, but at least I don't call for others to send money to bongo bongo land.

But do you call for the government to spend more money?

Tax avoidance is legal, calling for the government to spend more money is legal, but doing both looks bad.

Well we could leave the EU and say to the Irish unemployed, you are not part of the UK anymore sorry no jobs for you here.

And then you could be living in the UK doing your current job.

...the Government has no money to spend ..ask Liam Byrne of Labour who is well aware of how it was wasted......I agree tax avoidance is basically tax management ...but many of these schemes have been made available because Governments are not bright enough to close them down quick enough or they have VI presence or pressure in the process....whatever...the schemes must be closed down and changed from legal avoidance to evasion ...anybody not wishing to pay tax in a country should only have restricted visiting rights and no vote...if you're not part of the contribution then you have no say...

Wouldn't that mean that people who are not working would lose their vote?
