MPs and others might moan about it, but most would do exactly the same as Saint Bono. Miliband's trust fund is an obvious example. Politicians make the tax code so complicated they can simultaneously ensure poor people get whacked and those with something worth protecting pay very little. That said, it's a measure of the silliness that the Dutch Antillies plays a part in an Irish band's tax affairs. Bono's comments suggest the tax competitiveness of Eire is not all it's cracked up to be otherwise why be putting money elsewhere? Ultimatley large US companies need a low cost base in Europe to base their European service sector and manufacturing. The UK is too expensive and does not provide the right facilities, infrastructure or skilled staff outside of London, and London is too expensive. It would not be difficult or hard to get those US companies to move from Ireland to the UK, but I suspect that there is a secret handshake and brown envelopes exchanged to keep the work in Ireland otherwise Ireland would really become Greece and people would soon escape over the border, so in a way it's in the UK's benefit to give jobs to Ireland. Classic case of me misreading your post. On the vein of this discussion, I found this video quite good.... It's a bit Off-Topic, but I think it applies to Ireland and the UK to some degree. 21m: many wealthy people and corporations use their money to buy rules that favor their position; tax, anti-trust, IP laws, the point is with large size and money goes a great deal of political power and the more concentrated the wealth is at the top, the more susceptible you are to this corruption. 22m30s: nobody should expect equality of income. the real problem is that we don't have equality of opportunity: schools available to the poor are not as good as those available to wealthy. She's a socialist who stuck to her beliefs, something incredibly rare I believe. I steadfastly refuse to pay any tax at all, but at least I don't call for others to send money to bongo bongo land. Tax avoidance is legal, calling for the government to spend more money is legal, but doing both looks bad. ...the Government has no money to spend ..ask Liam Byrne of Labour who is well aware of how it was wasted......I agree tax avoidance is basically tax management ...but many of these schemes have been made available because Governments are not bright enough to close them down quick enough or they have VI presence or pressure in the process....whatever...the schemes must be closed down and changed from legal avoidance to evasion ...anybody not wishing to pay tax in a country should only have restricted visiting rights and no vote...if you're not part of the contribution then you have no say...
