Which High Street Stores Have Gone Into Administration Now?

Whittard

Olan Mills

Motorworld (who are they?!)

Ferraris (Welsh bakers)

Celebrations Group (Card Warehouse etc)

A year or two ago, how many saw this coming?

It would be interesting to keep track - a halt in shops going into administration may be an indicator of bottoming-out... I suspect we aren't going to see that for a while though since many have seen their credit lines dry up.

Thanks for making this thread. I knew there were a couple, but had already forgotten most of those. You figure its just getting started to, as the recession has barely started and already those are out of cash.

Hopefully we can use this thread to keep an updated version of the list. As when weeks and months go by it will be easy to forget which shops went down.

Yep, be nice to see this stickied.

My uninformed impression is that those that have gone to the wall already, - and those that go to the wall in the next couple of months - will be primarily those that were heavily indebted. I think we'll see at least another month of similar over leveraged retailers falling, and then a second wave who are not over indebted, but are hit by the simple lack of sales as consumers tighten their belts.

It'll be the second wave retailers that I have sympathy for.

A well run retail company has a lot of options when there is a downturn. Of course the most obvious one is letting staff go. Squeezing suppliers also puts pressure on jobs elsewhere. Although these headline failures set the mood music I suspect that retrenchment by the big stores is going to have more effect. I don't think we'll be out of the woods when shops stop going bust.

Blockbuster Video is rumoured to be shakey, prob because many people are getting a digital TV package, and can buy films on demand.

That, and the fact that, as every film I (and so I presume others) hire(d) from them for the last few years seems to have been used as a drinks coaster and is unplayable may also be reducing their customer base.

LOVEFILM has taken a large slice of the DVD rental market. It's cheap, easy and no late fees. I've been with them for 3 years and am overall quite satisfied with the service. Only had two incorrect discs sent to me, and a couple have been faulty.

The Bluray hire charge is no dearer than DVD either. :)

Why don't we have a bad news amnesty day?

Aren't you lot fed up posting disaster stories?

How about something good?

You must walk round with a black cloud over your head 24/7.

Let me guess.........

Your mostly single.

You don't go out much.

You haven't got many friends and you pay your electric on a key meter.

Not at all! Celebrated my third anniversary a fortnights ago, I go out once/ twice a week (weird shifts), I have quite a few mates/ hopos and pay may leccy by DD.

Incidentally, and as you've probably noticed, I'm overjoyed by the coming economic firestorm. Happy as a pig in shit, in fact (private joke, but it amuses me).

Would you like to live in a world where good news was considered newsworthy?
