Ukraine does give China a handy distraction of the West's gaze while it messes about in the Pacific. Several Asian nations have highlighted this and want more US gaze in that direction. China has also never wanted the mantle of global policeman, it wants the US to sod off but none of the world responsibilities the US often got put on it I guess you've never watched it properly. The channel collected an impressive array of gold, silver and bronze medals for its news and programmes coverage. The ‘Broadcaster of the Year’ award, considered the premier prize by the organisers, goes to the media organisation that wins the highest number of gold medals. The winners were announced online on April 16th. The awards featured entries from over 50 countries, covering content screened on U.S and international broadcasters including ITV, BBC, NBC and CBC. Al Jazeera English won a total of six gold medals. One of the gold medals went to its news coverage of the Sudan conflict in 2023, at a point in which over half a million Sudanese have fled the conflict in their country, most to neighbouring Chad. Correspondents Zein Basravi and Ahmed Idris spent weeks with them, getting an accurate picture of the dire situation in which the refugees are living. Most have fled from West Darfur, where ethnically driven violence and mass killings erupted again this month in the state capital, el-Geneina, pushing thousands more people to flee. Al Jazeera English’s Witness’ film “Rescue Mission Gaza” also earned a gold medal. The documentary follows a civil defence worker around Gaza City, the film has the plight of civilians at its core. During one brutal day, the team accompanies the first responder on his rescue missions: dodging bombs, racing injured people to hospitals, digging children out of rubble – and then heading back to do it all again. The other gold medals went to episodes from the Fault Lines and 101 East documentary strands. The channel also won six silver and eight bronze medals, which went to episodes from the news-analysis show The Listening Post and the environment-focused series “Earthrise”. “We are delighted to be named Broadcaster of the Year by the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards,” said Issa Ali, Acting Managing Director of Al Jazeera English. “This award comes from the hard-working teams at Al Jazeera who are deeply committed to reporting and telling the stories that matter. In today’s world, we believe good journalism is more important than ever. We are deeply grateful to receive this recognition for the work we do.” Other Divisions in the Al Jazeera Media Network also won top awards. The Al Jazeera Investigative Unit won three golds for its film “Gold Mafia - The Laundry Service.” Al Jazeera Digital’s explainer show “Start Here – On the Road” also won a gold. All content was screened and judged by the New York Festivals TV & Film Awards Grand Jury of over 200 producers, directors, writers, and other creative media professionals from around the globe. For over 60 years, New York Festivals TV & Film Awards have honoured exceptional and innovative content created on all continents and seen across all platforms. Al Jazeera English is a highly decorated news and current affairs channel. In recent years it has won three Royal Television Society awards, a Peabody and several Emmy awards, among other awards. I have watched Al Jazeera in both UK and abroad and watched the reactions of friends from the region describing lots of it as partisan BS. Its a lot better than RT but it pushes many partisan lines tht Qatar wants. The English language borrows stuff from Al Jazeera Arabic as have said many times before and that station is caught outright lying many times. What Al Jazeera English does well is often cover stories not featured elsewhere - especially deprivation in US but that was often because it was fodder for ME to say the Yanks aren't very good Ironically many people I know from the ME regard Al Jazeera as garbage in both English or Arabic and are stunned it is watched so widely over here and in Europe We've covered this between us before Jon

Fact/comment: Telegraph for example can have good reporting but basket-case editorial/comment. Are the two clearly split ? Sometimes yes, sometimes the editorial line sneaks in. Focus: that story about the Hindu mugger may be correctly and even brilliantly reported, but are you running factual but bad stories about Hindus every day all day and thereby distorting at a meta level through focus ? A variation might be a forum with tendentious thread titles hogging reasonable debate … It’s therefore possible, albeit more risky, to get reliable well-reported facts from annoyingly biased outlets. Probably a fair way of looking at it. AJ can do some great investigative work but also throws many stories of a Qatari favoured viewpoint or pet project. Its very popular in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria in Arabic and English but many friends from there again say it can spout garbage mixed in. The problem is not everyone comes equipped with a sieve as things like Fox News and Murdoch empire prove

I'm old and have seen good journalism come and go. Mostly go in the last 2-3 decades. I've seen the famous names who weren't worried by holding politicians accountable leave the BBC (some of which, like Mike Hanna have joined AJ) in droves. All Jeremy Bowen can do is go on conducted jollies with the IDF, while AJ has reporters on the ground in Gaza. There is a huge difference between the Arabic and the English version. If you're interested you could listen to this media podcast by top journos, where they mention the gulf between them (see what I did there). "Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu has passed a law that will ban foreign media from operating within the country. Al Jazeera is one of the main outlets on the ground providing reportage, and the most watched network in the region—so what impact will the closure of their operations in Israel have on the ability to get news out of the war zone? Alan Rusbridger and Lionel Barber are joined by journalist and humanitarian Khaled Mansour to discuss where genuine news reporting from the conflict will come from with the ban in place." Media Confidential https://mediaconfidential.lnk.to/podcasteo Give it a whirl, they have not picked up so many prestigious news awards for nothing. Saving For a Space Ship
Quote Finally, mainstream Western media is talking about Russia's program kidnapping whole schools of Ukrainian kids. Goal of the program is to get kids to Russia, away from families, to train in becoming cannon fodder for Putin's war against NATO. The West really needs to wake up. Netanyahu is an arsehole so what he bans is irrelevant Sure, every news source has a bias, even those which use omission to the same ends. Like both Gaza and the attack on the Iranian consulate is hardly covered now by the western press - it's all just evil Iran. Great for hawks like John Bolton who, like Netanyahu and his mainly fascist government, wants to flatten Iran. Of course Qatar is a rather unsavoury nation, like a lot of the Gulf states. It could be argued all Arab countries are in the unsavoury soup to a greater or lesser degree. But at least it's in a position and (was) willing to facilitate peace talks - more than can be said for any other nation (except maybe Egypt). Anyway, apparently Turkey has got involved in the peace negotiations to lighten the load on Qatar. I like a lot of the broad global programming AJ does. Particularly the documentaries. I accept the reporting is going to be from an Arab POV. But no other station can get what AJ does on the ground in Gaza. Also, AJ will be the only one to remind you of the attack on the Iranian consulate as a provocation. IMO, being Netanyahu's deliberate widening of the conflict and sucking in his allies to ensure continued material support. Recently, I never see it mentioned in equal terms or at all on the Beeb or Sky. Nor do I see much mention of Gaza since the Iranian attack the western press and media. You know, the thing that if Israel stopped the killing, all this would end thing. So you see, all media outlets are biased in one way or another. It's up to one's own curiosity and critical thinking to analyse the whole picture. Edited April 18 by jonb2

LOL there isn’t 300bn of assets in whole of russia never mind western owned ones which he hasn’t already seized like those planes and factories That time in 1990s 53 billion in early 90s dollars was seized from Iraq and distributed to victims of his war, which proves your nonsense assertion wrong as Russia obviously went ahead and stashed this criminal money in west (despite knowing in advance they will start a criminal war) because there is literally nowhere else to invest that is not worse, if you were correct thhe Russians wouldn’t have bought up so much property in London which be going to auction too leading to lower house prices 😂 I am enjoying how worked up Russian trolls are getting worked up and hysterical about sanctions and criminal asset seizure, yes all of you are ******ing criminals and are being treated as such, you are welcome to go and die for your criminal leader and his band of oligarchs too Edited April 19 by yelims
