Frank Hovis Posted September 17, 2016 Share Posted September 17, 2016 That the lottery was a double or triple rollover was a staple of news broadcasts as recently as two years ago and now it very rarely gets a mention, the only thing that does get reported is the nationality of a big Euromillions winner after the event. I've noticed because we put on some money at work when it gets up to rollovers and didn't used to have to visit their site to find out as it was on the news bulletins. Also on the local radio they used to give out the results the next day and have a chat about it (one presenter always bought a ticket). That's all stopped now. It feels like there was some BBC directive early last year to drop coverage of it and the rest of the media has followed suit. Was this because it was seen as promoting it when there are rivals? Other than finding it a pain to have to now check their website I don't miss the coverage, but it was prominent for twenty years and has now vanished. It's sad, because on payday, the bloke gambles the months wages at the bookies, loses it all, and then and shouts at the wife because he has no money to buy nappies. I have 3 children from my first marriage, and Mrs XYY has 3 from hers. 5 out of the 6 of them are living exactly as you describe. There's never any money for food, electricity or nappies - but their smart-phones are the latest models, and they always manage to have credit on them. We aren't supposed to know about this - but her older-sister informs us that one of them has racked-up ten-grand - yes, that's TEN THOUSAND pounds - in on-line gambling debts using her mobile phone. She's on the friggin' dole ffs, and has an abysmal credit-history - how the hell can this actually happen...? The modern world disgusts me more and more with the passing of each new day.... I have bought the occasional lottery ticket, or put a couple of quid on a dog, but it holds no interest to me. That £10k would buy a fine motorbike. I was trying to work out the odds of that happening. Then won my money back with the Euro Millions with two numbers. Ok I haven't tracked my losses over the year but trying to ride this 'luck'. It always amazes me how many people win and don't claim. There are 18 x £1M raffle ticket wins not been claimed at the moment. Probably dozens expired unclaimed too. We know it's not drugs, he never buys anything tangible but he loves the slot machines, so we reckon he's lost money doing online gambling. Dangerous position to be in. That's a good point - force him to go cold turkey. He's married with his second kid on the way. It's sad to see and we've considered an 'intervention' but he's never been able to exercise restraint or sensible judgement in any area of his life so he's not about to start now I guess. Why not waste money by rebuilding an old car/motorbike? That's what I do sometimes. I can assure you it gets expensive. I play the lottery about once evey 18 month, mainly as a result from partner nagging if its a rollover. Ive never bet on a horse. Ive never played a slotty. It just does not work for me. Gambling is the way to burn through your money. Most peopld can only drink a finite amount of booze. A FOBtT termial can swallow the average wage in 5 minutes. If so, surely that should be made illegal. I assumed you had to deposit cash from debit/credit cards? It shouldnt be forgotten that it was Labour that encouraged the massive increase in the gambling industry and the further ******ing over of the working class. Remember they wanted "Super Casinos" too, which would have ghettoised various towns (although it's hard to imagine Blackpool getting any worse). Wouldn't stop someone just getting a cash advance then depositing it into their account and using a debit card though. Sometimes the extra hassle is enough though after a night of heavy drinking. Bookies have always offered credit accounts, I had them with Hills, Ladbrokes, etc 20 years ago. I think legally they were not enforceable through the courts back then.
