and pigs might fly

Tenant advocacy and campaign group Generation Rent said swapping Westminster for East Yorkshire would save £120milllion over the course of a five-year parliament.

Architect and supporter Jay Morton, who specialises in social housing, said Parliament itself could be replaced by 364 affordable flats, mostly three-bed maisonettes for families and one- and two-bed flats, with communal areas such as swimming pools in the debating chambers.

I saw something about the cost of restoring that building. I don't think you could ever turn it into affordable housing....

About a billion, turning it into housing might make sense and cost less but I'd sell to the highest bidder. Certain historical parts of the building would need to be kept public.

More of the functions of the parliament should be done using technologies like video conferencing.

I'm not sure how much could be done online but it would reduce the cost of parliament considerably I imagine. And many people would also question whether we really need a second chamber anyway.

No problem with the relocation, but flats no. Architectural vandalism on a scale I doubt even Trotskyites would dare propose. A museum, leaving the interior intact may be. Would actually earn enough over the years, certainly in terms of overseas tourism, to build several house of Parliament sized flat developments.

Exactly.

With a rule that every MP lives in the constituency (s)he supposedly represents. And thus experiences, to a reasonable degree, the issues that affect people in that part of the country. Or, to put it succinctly, give themselves a chance to represent the constituency.

Yes that's a great idea. It would significantly reduce the chance that the MPs might inadvertently discover what's really going on and start interfering with the process of government.

+1 Use video conferencing. No housing allowances ...free up their time to looking after their constituency.

No.

I say this as a Yorkshireman. Hulls no good - too far easterly + northern.

Move parliament to Sheffield/Nottingham.

Thats about the centre of England.

I'm a Yorkshireman too but even I have to admit that Yorkshire is the wrong place. Parliament really should be in Birmingham.

^^ Please don't repost that debunked lie, it damages your case. Those pictures were falsified and were not taken from the debates they purport to be.

Allow me to debunk your debunking. The pictures that were used falsely were obtained from articles on the BBC website relating to debates on MPs pay and expenses. The person who created the original infographic clearly made an honest mistake which rather than the false claims by the spectator I think made that he did it to deceive people.
