Try this one instead. A really chilling movie....

And if that line still existed, exactly the same would have happened in the last couple of winters. The adjacent A66 is frequently closed for snow - so frequently that there is permanent infrastructure in place for dealing with it.

I've taken this faux warning as an excuse for diesel pre heaters for my car..gsm remote controlled! Or something. I just started looking for windscreen covers....but this is clearly an essential gadget. Kenlowe? Anyone got one?

The Stainmore line (can't see the videos at work)? Pity that one's closed, it would be quite an impressive journey, as long as you don't mind travelling over viaducts designed by the guy who designed the first Tay Bridge. Unrelated to snow, space weather this time, I read a bit about a signalman on that line on night shift watching the northern lights, and them sending all the instruments in his signal box crazy.

The Central England Temperature record is the longest running instrumental temperature record there is. See link for data.

January February March average oC.

2010 2.4

1963 -0.3

the coldest since

1740 -0.4

coldest ever

1684 -1.2

I might get around to pasting the numbers into excel and calculating the average.

The period I was thinking of was more like Nov/Dec '10 Jan '11.

Worst winter for decades: Record-breaking snow predicted for November

It turned out to be a nice November.

People who went out and bought stuff in the expectation of "record breaking snow" in November would have every right to feel chisled.

Get ready for arctic plunge: Up to eight inches of snow to sweep Britain

AN “Arctic plunge” is set to trigger freezing temperatures this week and could bring snow across much of Britain by Friday.

Who takes much notice of long term forecasts anyway? Nobody forecast the best summer for ages, not that I'm aware.

Re winters, I find it best to work on the basis that we live in Northern Europe and that winters are likely to be cold, or very cold. If they then turn out mild, it's a bonus.

Dry made it feel milder than it was imo, after a normal September and a very mild October (+1.7 c above average) I reckon November was pretty close to average, the Met office hasn't released the November stats yet.

This week feels pretty mild too, but again you look at the temperatures and we are at average and plunging below by the end of the week. This calm windless dry weather always feels a lot milder than it actually is.

So that's a similar headline for last Friday, Monday and Tuesday.

They really need people to buy their winter stuff. It looks like "the recovery" really isn't going that well.

PERCEPTION!

I love snow, so 3 months of it will be the 'best winter in history' to me.
