I think I read somewhere that the Bomber Command death rate was 50%. Definitely crazy brave.

One of the best broadcasts of the time was Wynford Vaughn-Thomas who recorded a bombing raid from a Lancaster. At one point a German night fighter gets on their tail and the rear gunner comes on the intercom with a West Country drawl. "I hit him skiperrr, he's goin' down".Beats Strictly Come Dancing or The X files.

I recall a line from one of those Pathe news reels. The clip showed a very much on fire Dresden from the bomb aimers window to the commentary "Up here at 20,000 feet it's -10 outside the Lanc. It looks a darn site warmer down there!"

Yes,they were a trifle insensitive too.Bearing in mind Dresden was full of refugees. It's generally accepted that the allies wanted to demonstrate to the advancing Russians what they could do as a warning.

Quote from Patrick Bishops excellent book Bomber Boys as two Lancaster pilots are leaving in the evening to conduct a raid over Berlin

"It's a lovely sunset"

"F*ck the sunset I want to see the sun rise"

Your mention of bombing Germany and sunshine reminded me that the old man's job was to drop a bucket of sunshine on Gdansk should the WWIII balloon have gone up in the '60s. It was accepted that his chances of getting there and back were minimal. Of course, there wouldn't have been much to come back to anyway.

Same with my Grandad, a Beaufighter pilot in the war he was shot down over Normandy by the tail gunner of the Heinkel Bomber he had just shot down and spent 2 years in Stalag IVB which pissed him off immensely. Just dug up his navigators account of that recently and quite a story it makes. The navigator was caught in France after falling into a ditch containing a German soldier and a French girl cementing European relations and grandad parachuted on to a fence and broke both his legs and had a piece of cockpit controls wedged into his arm. (He and us thought he had been shot until after he died and they removed it expecting it to be a bullet, instead finding a small control switch) As they were taken to the POW camp they thought it was amusing how the Germans supplied so many soldiers for their escort until they realised it was for their protection as they travelled through the recently RAF bombed cities. The population would have torn them apart.

As I said quite a story...different breed back then. ;)

Strictly Come Dancing would be better if they just had the dancers dancing, with the judges awarding points off camera and no Bruce Forsyth rabbiting on hinting when everyone should laugh at his totally unfunny jokes.

What has happened over recent years is that TV programmes have become so padded out with fluff that is designed to edify the presenters.

There can be few educated people who aren't aware of Bilderberg - it receives enormous amounts of coverage in most mainstream newspapers every year as well as extensive coverage from most major TV channels, and every conspiracy-nutter in town.

Susan Boyle on the other hand is popular partly because of her musical talent and partly because she articulates a dream of the plucky little gal getting a lucky break. It's somewhat analogous to the log-cabin to Whitehouse dream wrapped up in a room of the cynical being made to shut-up, sit-down, and take notice of someone who though not conventionally pretty ignored the taunts and sang. The song she sang was of course peculiarly well-suited - one might say autobiographical.

The dream has now been commodified and packaged for the Christmas market. And if this secures a financial future for her I shan't resent it.

As to Bildeberg - it's no secret - it's simply a groupthink meet. But that's a lot shorter, simpler and less boring than your masturbatory conspiracy.

I gave you links to Reuters. That's the world's number one news agency. Are you seriously suggesting that the soap opera of Susan Boyle's life is 154 times more important and/or newsworthy than characters such as Kissinger, Mandelson, the Queens of Spain and Holland, Geithner, Osborne, Trichet and a hundred other powerful and influential people having a clandestine meeting that was guarded by hordes of secret police and two F-16 jets?

I'm 99% sure that you're on a wind-up. However, should you really be incredibly misinformed, just plain thick, been at the vino, or deliberately spreading disinfo, here's your opportunity to provide something tangible to bolster this nonsense: 'it [bilderberg] receives enormous amounts of coverage in most mainstream newspapers every year as well as extensive coverage from most major TV channels.'

I'll let you provide the links to back up your risible claims.

Here's some of my own searches.

Morning Star, 0 results - Britain's most left-wing newspaper has, it appears, no interest whatsoever in hardcore globalists meeting like thieves in the night.

Socialist Worker, 0 results - oh dear.

New Statesman, 45 results - I clicked on the first 10 links. Bilderberg was mentioned in nine of them in reader Internet comments. The one which the B-word was included in the body of the article was from eight years ago, and the scribe supported the secrecy on the back of promoting 'open discussion.' (Yes, I laughed too!)

Private Eye, 0 results - well, lo and behold, those boys like to poke fun at everyone and everything. Or do they? Course not.

Sky News, 0 results - that channel recently devoted no less than three hours of live coverage to following Jade Goody's funeral cortege.

One World Government? We already have a One World Media.

Tell me it ain't true.

I've rather got into this series of Strictly *******. Got to say this article of 2008 has a point....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/3263441/Strictly-Come-Dancing-public-vote-is-racist-claim-viewers-on-BBC-message-board.html

This year Anthony Agogo, and Ainsley Harriet already off and the public doing their best to evict Jamelia every week in spite of being middling. She even said, ''The public don't like me'' this week. An obvious assumption when you go from middle to bottom every week post public vote.

Must be a bit embarrassing for Carol Kirkwood and Jeremy Vine who just keep evading the dance off as darlings of the white Granny vote, even though they are especially hopeless. One feels they may have to end the judges misery and do a John Sargeant self eviction. As for Katie Derham, well she's quite hot, so I hope she lasts the course, another of those white middle class types that will attract the audience vote. She's got my vote

Well the 'positive' sterotype about black people and dancing - is they are better than white people. You dont ever hear a black person being bothered or argiung this point.

Maybe they are just not living up to their own standards on Strictly ?

+1 I am getting increasingly annoyed at the Beeb for playing such games on the back of my licence fee.

I don't really mind how much shite they show on Saturday nights, as long as they keep the Scandi/Italian/other subtitled dramas going on BBC4. Montalbano and Borgen were favourites.

But then I can't stand Downton either - cliched tripe IMO - so I'm probably weird.

Anyone else like The Detectorists? Just back for a new series - I really enjoyed the first one, though hardly anyone else I know watched it. It's still tucked away at 10pm on BBC4, but there's been a lot about it in the TV guides.

I watched it on Iplayer. Very good. Slow burner. New series has started I think. Makenzie Crook? the writer was on the radio the other day. Seems a thorougly nice bloke.

Agogo had a dislocated shoulder and was about as rhythmic as a log, Ainsley Harriet is an annoying twerp, ideal as a front man in his own show (still totally annoying but not over shadowing) but not in a group of people. As for Jamellia, distinctly average dancer, little charm and equally as annoying as Harriet, her real issue is she is a low grade celebrity who's main claim to fame is Loose Women, a rather crass ITV show and that's where your middle class sensibilities might be kicking in. Plenty of black and asian people have done well on Strictly, Luis Smith won 2 years ago for a start and as pointed out in the article Alisha Dixon won and Colin Saunders came second.

Vine is terrible, but he knows it and that's part of the appeal of the show, he is a much bigger personality that Jamellia and has charm. As for Carol Kirkwood, she is actually relatively good.

Definitely been a bit hard on Carol as indeed they were with Katie Derham, here, which warranted a score lower than Vine who really is hopeless. Some rather odd judges scoring to say the least.

Katie Derham, completely gorgeous. She does that cute little scrunched up nose thing when she smiles, always fancied her since the first time I saw her on the news. Now put me, her and Rachel Riley in the same bed together, add Susie Dent for a bit of extra spice, and put some Barry White on the stereo; I'll see you all in a few years.

Oom pah pah..oo la la. Loved this on Saturday, Kellie Bright has really won me around. Timing and mirroring are impeccable and she does this whilst acting, remarkable. God knows how that One show girl keeps surviving though.

Incidentally anybody spot the mistake that renders this a 9, because I can't, nor could the judges say why this wasn't perfect?

The disclosure of public votes is a bit vague. But showing an audit eg. Like in the lottery or table of stats would be a tad dull. They do reference the terms and conditions in the show which they clearly don't like doing.

As it is telly I assume all the judge voting and public voting is rigged!

I'm amazed - male posters discussing the finer points of this claptrap...!

If you must watch this cack - and an exchange deal with your lass for watching Doctor Who afterwards is quite acceptable - then never mind the dancing, let's discuss them massive-breasted burds in sequins and spandex who hang around on the edges when the contestants are being interviewed after the dance. Phhhhhhhooooorrrrrrr!!!!

I don't even know if they are part of the show or not, and quite frankly - I don't friggin' care...!

;)
