giesahoose
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-32490250 Surprised there isn't a thread on this. Worst riots in 10 years apparently
Nationalist
I could do without the BBC continually referring to the rioters as "young people". They are rather obviously "black people" of all ages. It's a PC term which has infiltrated from France where muslim rioters are called les jeunes.
londislagerhound
Well at least they waited until after the case was investigated rather than just assuming foul play. After all, smashing up your own neighbourhood, and presumably ruining the businesses of many of your fellow citizens isn't something to be done lightly. onlyme2
Merica could do with a few million more latinos to fill jobs demand and another trade treaty so that more goods and services can be sourced elsewhere. Those that have nothing to lose, lost it.

reddog
Possibly sounds a bit mad, but like a lot of former industrial cities, this place shouldn't really exist anymore. It started as a village, massively expanded due to steel and other manufacturing, but now that is gone there is no point trying to sustain it (the population is actually sinking). (By the way the Wire is one on my favourite TV series)
Executive Sadman
East asians want to invest and move to america...they're the only ones who can clean up places like Detroit and Baltimore...the iconic pictures of Koreans protecting their stores during the LA riots. (By the way the Wire is one on my favourite TV series) I think thats a very good point. We have ghost villages and ghost towns...why not ghost cities. We certainly did historically (Mayan/aztec cities) I guess towns and villages dont have the voting power, a city like baltimore does, so is kept in zombie status for all eternity. Maybe but it's not like Baltimore is badly situated. The NSA is also based 15 miles outside the city so there are job opportunities.

reddog
OK, that's true there are government jobs in the area, and Baltimore's economic strategy is to now build the economy around their hospital and university, but in the past these were just secondary jobs used to support the production of something that can be sold (whether physically manufactured or a service), in my opinion as soon as the support job becomes the economy then that economy is screwed. I recon Baltimore will go the Detroit route with a centre of 19th century buildings a burnt out outer ring, and a prosperous (very far) outer suburb. My favourite series of "The Wire" is series 2, where the dockers take up drug/people smugging in order to pay off bent politician, in order to build new infrastructure for the port. Baltimore has one of the best medical schools in the world. Improvements in medical treatments are hardly "peripheral" to our well being and are a perfectly valid basis for an economy. interestrateripoff
Furious mother catches her masked son preparing to join Baltimore protests - so slaps him in front of his rioting pals and chases him home A Baltimore mother is being hailed for doing her part to quell the violence on after a video of her smacking her son upside the head when she spotted him rioting and throwing rocks at police emerged on Monday. The unidentified mom recognized her son even though he was wearing a black ski mask that covered much of his face. When the mother spotted her son on TV throwing rocks she went after him like a heat-seeking missile. Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts also mentioned it when he spoke at a press conference shortly before midnight on Monday. Batts said: 'In one scene you had a mother who grabbed a child who had a hood on his head and started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed.'
