Maynardgravy
Anyone watching tonight? Two lots of first time buyers, one lot with £400k, one with £600k. I actually laughed out loud at the flat the first lot saw, it looked exactly like the flats I lived in as a student, except my room was bigger and cost me £50 a week. The second lot were shown a flat (I'd call it a basement) in West Hampstead, the kitchen was basically a large cupboard. This was supposed to be a family home. Ridiculous. Brilliant isn't it? Krusty: "600k, I know it's a lot of money, but not around here.....property is selling within hours" The last time I saw a ramp this size it had Evel Knievel revving at one end. Eddie_George
So it's 600k for a three bedder that's really only a two bedder because the kitchen is just a corridor. Wonder how cheeky the offer will be?

ccc
I'd saved a reasonable deposit (20-25%) before HTB was announced, upon watching the subsequent rocket I decided to take a "**** it" approach and now plan to enjoy life instead. If they drop, blinding, if not, hey ho. I do get the occasional rage but what can you do ? Aye pretty much my thoughts. Although in Edinburgh you can get some places for semi reasonable prices. But these are very small basic flats in average areas. Far from good value. Anything in a decent area that is solid build is still a fortune. Ram it. For now anyway. I will just continue spending my 'Dead money' as i am constantly reminded.

ccc
Not just you and the pressure when you have kids is untenable. But you're supposed to be the change.you want so here.we.are. I can imagine. I have known a few blokes really not interested in buying a house anytime soon - suddenly their burd is pregnant - and they are pretty much told they MUST buy before its born. Now i can see why you would want to remove the possibility of having to move a lot if possible. However the idea that you can't have a kid and 'get on with your life' unless you have a massive debt hanging over your head. Its ******ing insane. ccc
Try telling 99% of wimmin that. To be fair i think pregnancy does some seriously ******ed up things to their brain. My sister has done bad out of this. Bought the house - now got another kid - current place not big enough - can't sell the place for almost 50k less than they paid for it. Funny enough you don't see these stories plastered over the media.

I am starting to think maybe just making sure you have enough to buy outright when you plan to retire - and staying flexible in the meantime - is possible a better option. Of course you may 'lose out' on the 'profit' from downsizing. Then again - when you add in maintenance and interest and improvements etc - there probably isn't much 'profit' after all. Habeas Domus
Most of the time these property programmes are showing people looking around a property when actually they already exchanged contracts. (in some cases they have actually moved in and are 'viewing' a house with their own furniture in it) The average person looks at something like 50 houses before making a decision - so if the show was completely honest we would only see about one sale every series. The bigger the capital cushion you can build for yourself between now and the inevitable bust the better. Just don't leave it all in sterling. Osborne's contention that it's different this time because this bubble's been built out of consumer income rather than debt will probably go down as one of his more enduring inanities when it's he who is borrowing and spending like a drunk in a casino.
