Treasury to seize Khadafi's billions

The government plans to seize billions of pounds in assets belonging to Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi which include property and bank accounts, the Telegraph reported Friday.

The Treasury has set up a special unit to track down the assets which are believed to include a 10 million pound London home, the paper said.

"The first priority is to get British nationals out of Libya," a government source told the daily.

"But then we are ready to move in on Kadhafi's assets, the work is under way. This is definitely on the radar at the highest levels."

According to the paper some 20 billion pounds in liquid assets, mostly in London, will be frozen "within days."

Well, that'll be a nice windfall to p*ss away on PFI, single mums, your out-group bugbear of choice etc.

Such fickle friends the Brits. Hope Khadafi was sensible enough to keep some of his stash in Switzerland. ;)

Well his family did keep some, although much less than a few years ago:

Swiss freezes Gaddafi's assets

The poor fellow appears to have a dislike for the country - From a year ago:

Gaddafi calls for jihad against Switzerland

At a meeting in the city of Benghazi to mark the prophet Muhammad's birthday, Gaddafi described the country as an infidel state that was "destroying" mosques. Last year he urged the UN to abolish Switzerland and divide it between Germany, France and Italy.

Gaddafi has nursed a grudge against Switzerland since his son Hannibal and daughter-in-law were arrested in Geneva in 2008 for allegedly beating two servants at a luxury hotel. The Gaddafis were released soon afterwards and the charges dropped. But the Libyan leader was so enraged by his son's two-day detention that he shut subsidiaries of Swiss firms in Libya, had two Swiss businessmen arrested, cancelled most flights between the two states and withdrew about $5bn (£3.2bn) from his Swiss bank accounts.

Well, it looks like he'll get away with some of his money if judging by this thread there are so many ways to spell his name....

khadafi, ghadaffi, gaddafi

:P

Plus it's not really a Western-style surname, it's the name of his tribe - there are tens of thousands of people with the same name.

Anyway he should have stashed the cash in a Cayman Island trust with no named owners.

I would sincerely hope that these assets will be returned to whatever government Libya has next, or am I being hopelessly naive? I mean, really, can we just appropriate all this stuff? That's... odd.

Of course it is!

When Clegg asked him if he saw anything, Cameron replied: "Yes, wonderful things".

So busy falling over themselves counting Gaddafi's riches they forgot about the British people stuck over there.

When this sort of thing happens and it's tourists being evacuated I think they're doing the right thing.

But how much is it going to cost us to get these oil company workers out? The oil company makes money by being in a risky environment... surely the burden lies with them not the uk taxpayer?

My understanding is the money is in a Sovereign Wealth Fund and it would be frozen, not taken. It would be given back to the new Libyan government, if one is ever formed.

Good links. Thanks.

Media reports said huge assets of the Gaddafi clans are not expected in Switzerland because billions of dollars of Libyan funds deposited in the Swiss banks were already transferred in the wake of a diplomatic crisis between the two countries following the arrest of Gaddafi's son Hannibal in Geneva in July 2008. According to the estimates of the Swiss National Bank, Libyan deposits in the Swiss banks shrank from 5.7 billion francs to 630 million francs as a result of the transfer. It is still unclear how much wealth belongs to the Gaddafi clan, the reports said.

It looks like London was his main banking centre.

Amazing, has he not paid for the arms he's had?

From another thread:

An Al Jazeera commentator said yesterday evening that Muammar Gaddafi keeps billions abroad and is using his money to pay those mercenaries. Usually the 2 favourite locations for this type of money are Switzerland and London. And these dictators never keep all eggs in just one or a few baskets. We can be pretty sure Gaddafi has money in London.

And this same commentator said that the best way to topple the regime is not military action, but to freeze these assets. It would "pull the rug under his feet". Though it may be too late, as Gaddafi may have already taken a lot of physical cash (and gold?) to Libya? I doubt he is paying mercenaries by cheques.

Still, freeze whatever is still here! FFS!
