okaycuckoo
The derelict building Gadaffi gave his speech from was the palace bombed by the US in 1986, when alot of his family were killed - kept as a shrine, probably a familiar sight to Libyan TV viewers. dukat
Both Ben Ali of Tunisia and Mubarak of Egypt were very similar in the fact that they were both power hungry, self important, career politicians who loved the adoration of their people. When this adoration ceased, they both left office. Gadaffi, is a different bread, he is something of akin to Saddam Hussain, or Kim Jon Ill. He will not walk away, instread he will make the Libyan people pay for every square meter of Libyan soil before he gives it up. Tunisa was a perfectly executed revolution. Egypt was badly executed coo de tah Libya is a bloodbath, but a necessary one. Question is whos next, Yemen making some noise Bahrain still making some noise Iran making some noise Syria making some noise Algeria making some noise 2010 - 2011 has seen more activilty than any other years I can remember Australian floods Australian Cyclones Australian fires Brazillian Floods Sri Lankan Floods Worst winter in the UK for 30 years Record low temperatures in UK in living memory New Zealand Earthquakes Yemen making some noise Bahrain still making some noise Iran making some noise Syria making some noise Algeria making some noise And heres the scary bit, its not even March yet !!! What next I wonder, it like the end of days.
MrPin
It really reminds me of the slow-quick-slow collapse of Iron Curtain states. Wonderful opportunity for the people, I just hope they don't become overrun with investment bankers and economists! Gaddafi might be the new Ceaucescu? fluffy666
My gut feeling is that the Al Gore brigade are not going to have to worry: sooner or later plain simple market economics will make alternatives to oil viable on a mass scale; either because they get cheaper, oil gets more expensive or both. Simple market economics may well take us down the 'let's see what else there is to burn' route first. There is a reason why, when you get a physical scientist or engineer to look at the science and numbers behind energy and environmental policy, a strong majority will tell you will tell you to start building nuclear reactors right now.. yellerkat
Evening Standard: Britain sold sniper rifles to Gaddafi just before his troops began killing Britain approved the export of sniper rifles to Libya just months before marksmen began murdering protesters in Tripoli. An export licence was granted to let "a small quantity" of deadly long-range weapons be shipped out in November for exhibition or testing. Four licences were approved for the rifles, along with assault rifles and semi-automatic handguns, with cleaning kits. Meet the new lot, same as the old lot. newbonic
.... My gut feeling is that the Al Gore brigade are not going to have to worry: sooner or later plain simple market economics will make alternatives to oil viable on a mass scale; either because they get cheaper, oil gets more expensive or both. The exhaustion of high EROI (30-100) sweet light crude (SLC) will probably cause us to burn ever greater quantities of more expensive and lower EROI (<10) alternatives like tar sands, oil shales, deep water, more coal, etc. They're not true alternatives to high EROI SLC as they've always been there, but not worth bothering with (except coal which has never gone out of fasion) until SLC started to run out (around about now). This won't be good news either for you at the Tesco petrol pump, or to the Al Gore brigade, or to the sweet heavy polar bears.

Democorruptcy
LIBYA was split down the middle last night over how Colonel Gaddafi should eventually be killed. Crazy trial! Crazy trial! Amid angry scenes some called for a kangaroo court and a hastily organised firing squad, while others are demanding a crazy show trial and a televised hanging. The divisions over Gaddafi's imminent death emerged minutes after the Libyan leader's carefully planned charm offensive had somehow backfired. In a warm and intelligent speech littered with good natured death threats, Gaddafi tried to ease the concerns of a furious population by saying they were all on drugs and that he would really like to massacre them. But as Western nations began to evacuate their stranded Libyan oil money, millions of ordinary people said they would fight to the death over how Gaddafi should be executed. Sulieman al-Kalifa, spokesman for the February Kangaroo Movement, said: "The Romanians didn't dick about with Ceausescu. They scooped him out of a tank, took him to a canteen, asked his name and then whacked him behind a bike shed. "The whole thing took about 20 minutes. Bish bash bosh. That's got to be better than a lot of farting about." But Mohammed Bakra, deputy chairman of Crazy Trial Now, insisted a Ceausescu-style firing squad would deprive Libya and the world of an hilarious two-month court case. He said: "Basically, we just stick him in a glass box and let him go mental. "It will be very, very funny and we can make CDs and podcasts. You could sit on the tube listening to Colonel Gaddafi going on about cheese-flavoured Western pixie-devils and why you should never share a sleeping bag with a bearded man." He added: "I reckon we could get six, maybe eight weeks out of it before we get bored. Then we just find him guilty and hang him in the football stadium at seven o'clock on a Saturday night. "We could get McFly to do the warm-up." http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/international/libya-facing-civil-war-over-how-to-kill-gaddafi-201102233568/
