This has been tried before ... 'I'm Backing Britain' I think it was - back in the 1970s.

No-one took any notice of it then and they won't now. In those days the choice was between crappy hi-fis that were poorly made and unreliable (or very expensive ones) and kit made by Sony, Pioneer, Hitachi etc.

And, as time went by, a choice between an unreliable Ford Escort or Austin Allegro (affectionately known as Allaggro) or a Toyota Corolla.

Now there isn't much choice at all.

I just looked at that site and at a few companies. The prices! Unbelievable.

Lets seem Oh look Thompson Morgan, British you say? They have an indian call centre and their nursey isn't in the UK, it is in a small city outside Hangzhao China probably why it takes 2 months for their orders to be processed.

Easy to do with alot of food (well what isnt fraudulantly labelled). It took me more time than it should of the other day to convince someone that buying butter from Scotland in Scotland was a better idea than some Danish muck, no matter how good the advert.

I do, most of my wearable biking gear is made in Italy or France, Shark helmets for example the only ones which fit me proper are made in Marseilles.

My gloves however are made in Japan, they are uber nice though and feel like you aren't wearing any gloves at all, yet have excellent crash protection.

British manufacturing got priced out by companies with cheaper labour costs.

A large percentage of the average worker's wages is spent on putting a roof over their heads.

If houses were cheaper, wages could be lower and we would be able to compete in world markets.

I don't know when it is going to permeate through to the generally moronic public that their obsession with high house prices, eventually, will turn us into a third world nation.

British products are expensive because the owners of British capital, especially landlords, want so much money for the use of their property. Wages could be comfortably lower with no loss in living standards if the cost of commercial and residential real estate was allowed to fall to where it should be. When you can build and staff microelectronics plants and investment banks in Guangdong and Shanghai, there is no reason for land in Brum or the Docklands to be so much more expensive than it is in China (or even France). Time for British landlords to learn their little patch ain't as special as they think it is.

A lot of them are discovering this my 2 work places ago washing dishes, the biggest landlord i.e. the council nigh on doubled their biz rates, so they shut down and retired.

aye, China and India are too big to drag themselves up to our standard of living, the labour difference will be there for ever.

Bit by bit, more and more will get outsourced right down to NHS Direct, legal services and accounting etc, very few professions in this country will be able to charge what they charge now in a few years time.

One of my favourite points. High house prices (i.e. big debt) just makes the labour of this country uncompetitive. UK plc ends up working for the banks to service debt, even more so since the taxpayer bailout.

We need our financial sector to do what it's intended i.e. mug the rest of the world, not its own people.

Protectionism won't really help the UK economy.

However the UK would benefit from more manufacturing and exports (as opposed to ex-pats) if that's possible.

Buy British only if it happens to be the best for your money. Recent news stories about japanese cars aside, British people owning lots of reliable and good value vehicles is actually good for the people of Britain. Ah, sorry I forgot, British cars are good for the economy because it gives mechanics more work...

Oh, and this isn't really a campaign it's a clever Internet link swapping (or similar) scheme I think.

But would you want foreigners to stop importing British products and services as well?

Should every country have a closed economy?

Or specialise in what each do better, and then trade? We had a few centuries of it. It has worked well.

Progress depend on trade. The freer the better. It has worked for centuries.

Protectionism on the other hand is a major cause of divergence of interests and wars, including the 1st and 2nd world wars.

For instance (just a basic example, but it is valid for other products as well) : If we try to grow bananas we'll need heated greenhouses, and tropical countries could grow pears only in air-conditioned green houses. This would make all products much more expensive to make, and much more expensive for everybody. Would we be "protecting" our individual countries.

Same thing for other products and services. Google "David Ricardo".

Edit: And no, races to the bottom (in salaries and labour standards) don't happen, didn't happen since the industrial revolution, quite the opposite. The poorer country develops, and increases global wealth.

Late 60s. It's even referenced at the end of Carry On Up the Khyber.

I notice under "DVD" they list those traditional, olde worlde British companies Panasonic and Sony.

Sony was started in a garage in Cleckheaton you know. A guy called Wilf Ottershaw started building crystal wireless sets with a 300ft long power cable. They were the first Sony Walkmans (hernia trusses supplied separately).
