Trampa501
Could be a big eruption soon. https://www.rt.com/news/357586-volcano-katla-earthquakes-iceland/
This time
I'm going on holiday in a couple of weeks - hope I don't get stranded. A friend of mine got stuck in Moscow airport for nearly a week the last time an Icelandic volcano erupted.
nome
Didn't they say the last Icelandic eruption (Ejyafalljokull??) has always traditionally been a pre cursor to the eruption of a bigger volcano? Is this that bigger one they were referring to?

Is this that bigger one they were referring to? Yes. Last eruption autumn 1918 - bad winters 1918 and 1919. But would it be a drag on the economy or be stimulative and make people go out and buy clothes/fuel/4x4s/skidoos?

DEATH
I follow the Iceland volcanic stuff, it's not that far away from us really, about 800 miles from Glasgow, same distance really from Lands End to John o Groats. Katla is overdue a big eruption, here's the recent big ones. 1918 - VEI-4 or VEI-5; about 0.7 cubic km ejected material 1860 - VEI-4 1823 - VEI-3 1755 - VEI-5; 1.5 cubic km ejected material. Flood discharge 200,000–400,000 m³/s 1721 - VEI-5 1660 - VEI-4 1625 - VEI-5 1612 - VEI-4 1580 - VEI-4 934 - VEI-5 or VEI-6, 5 cubic km of tephra and 18 cubic km of lava A VEI-5 looks possible in our lifetimes and if it blew towards the UK it could cause significant problems here. DEATH
Isn't the big one Katla? Yes and this is the one that showed the recent activity. The mid atlantic ridge got a 7.1M earthquake at the weekend, something going on there.

nome
What's the worst case scenario for us Brits when this does erupt? Well the last one caused me to have a really irritating tickly cough the whole time it was going on.
dgul
What's the worst case scenario for us Brits when this does erupt? Possibly a little bit of disruption to air travel. Might make this coming winter a bit bad, but probably won't.

DEATH
What's the worst case scenario for us Brits when this does erupt? No sprouts for christmas, maybe a few buildings/bridges collapse from the weight of the ash, prolonged and colder winter. Bárðarbunga has started rumbling in the last few hours too. If they both go at the same time things could get interesting.

stormymonday_2011
So I can stop worrying about the nuclear war thread as an Icelandic volcano is going to get me first.

The rumbles are probably just things settling down after that.

happy_renting
What's the worst case scenario for us Brits when this does erupt? Might cause a kerfuffle, or in an extreeme case, create a bit of a hoo-hah.
Errol
Russia will be blamed. Putin's secret agents are using a new weapon to disturb the volcanoes.
CunningPlan
Russia will be blamed. Putin's secret agents are using a new weapon to disturb the volcanoes. Nah. It will be the fault of profiteers. My wife got stuck in Portugal for 10 days last time this happened. I ran out of bog roll and tea bags as I didn't realise they don't auto-replenish. I will be better prepared this time.
