Britney's Piers Posted January 5, 2011 Share Posted January 5, 2011 A woman posted a chilling suicide note on Facebook - prompting sickening messages from her online friends.Before taking her life on Christmas Day, Simone Back, 42, updated her status saying: 'Took all my pills be dead soon bye bye everyone.' But none of the 1,048 friends she had on the social networking site even attempted to contact her in person to stop her. Today Miss Back's devastated mother has asked why no-one helped. Instead of trying to save her, some so-called friends mocked her in cruel messages under her tragic final status update. One called her a liar and another said it was 'her choice'. Seventeen hours later, police broke down the door of her flat in Brighton and found her dead. They'd have been busy with real friends and family..... Which leads to an interesting question. Is there an inverse relationship between number of 'friends' on FB and number of 'real' friends? What's the r-squared of the slope? I reckon I have about 4 friends at the last count. Friends I class as people who would drop everything if I was in trouble. Things we all realised yonks back and people are only getting now, friends made soley on the Internet don't count for squat until/if you actually meet the person in real life as well. Coincidentally I recently read about Kitty Genovese who was murdered in the US in the 1960s. About a dozen people witnessed or heard parts of the attack but no one helped. The more people who are around the less chance anyone will act- a kind of group mentality emerges with everone waiting for someone to step inand take charge. This effect was studied by two social psychologists Latané and Darley who successfully replicated it in experiments with someone faking a seizure on a New York street. Amazingly the chances of someone helping decreased as the numbers of passers by increased. It's discussed at length in Richard Wiseman's book "59 seconds". No idea if it's true, and certainly not going to friend her to find out... However, there was a story that used to be told about a boy who cried wolf. One that I don't think is used very much these days due in part to the number of people having 'play' fights out in the street, or shouting 'help' in the middle of the night without really meaning it.
