Tonkers
Dubai Investors Do Not have Title Deeds Intersting stuff. Is Dubai essentially worthless? Couldn't find any updates on the Palm and World developments - halted? Watched a show last week on the building of The World, the plans for it looked horrific, and they also touched on the amount of water traffic that would be generated. They also had on the Irish investors who had bought 'Ireland', intending to recreate Ireland on it. Looks like the project is on hold: http://www.worlddubai.co.uk/irelandinthesun.htm Here are the plans: http://www.irelandinthesun.com/index.html Ugly! Let's see - someone hands over vast amounts of money to 'buy' a flat but doesn't get hold of the deeds. I can think of a title for them. TW4T. R K
F*ck me that's funny. Fools and their money and all that. Love the riverdance sh1te soundtrack. Who needs to take the p1ss out of the Irish when they parody themselves like that?

It may be quite the opposite - if these are owned by people wealthy enough to buy them outright and not use them as holiday lets, they won't be there that often anyway. Tumbleweed time. Giordano Bruno
Oh dear, I just watched the video for the Island of Ireland - hilarious! http://www.irelandinthesun.com/video.html The real Ireland is much better. Why opt for a second-rate feeble imitation?I've just found this on youtube. 'They had to act quickly or they would miss the boat.' Where have I heard that before? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2inWJ-GNXA Edited August 22, 2009 by Fly by Night

profitofdoom
The question was put Is Dubai worthless?. Well,I 'll be honest I havn't been there but I don't feel that I need to.It's easy to get the idea of the place by the fact that every wealth fantasist seems to make a beeline for the place as soon as they can beg, borrow or MEW enough cash to cover the air fare. The Motor Trade is full of these fake rolexed, spray tanned, bejewelled twats and their mahogany peroxide wives giving it large. "Yeah mate,we went business class of course, well Shazza likes to travel in style". Well we guessed that from the fact that she drives a ten year old Range Rover with a cheap private plate. The last thing in the world I want is to be sat next to one of these on my week off. It's Blackpool for lottery winners so consequently Mrs P and myself will be going to Finisterre, walking on the beach and eating the seafood for the next week. CokeSnortingTory
That whole Ireland thing is disturbingly reminiscent of the "stonehenge" scene in Spinal Tap.

The way I see it is that these developments all started out as money laundering schemes, with the apartments having no value beyond this. I had previously read that Sheik Mo had only promised that foriegners could own their properties, but this is not fully enshrined in law, and can be revoked at any time. Also, if any one of these developers goes bust (very likely), the 'owners' lose everything, as well. So, these properties are worthless. There is little real economy in Dubai beyond property? The World is such a fantastic example of this utter folly. I have been trawling forums to try and get a state of play but not too much info out there. I did find a post saying that the Palm is sinking and when you turn on the taps in a particular hotel, cockroaches come out.
sun n sea
I thought I read somewhere that the rulers of Dubai were banking on turning the place into a tourist mecca.. they are desperate to find something, anything, to replace their Oil income. Personally speaking Dubai would be the LAST place on earth I'd want to go on my hols. I can't see it's much fun sitting in a sand blown cr@phole as temperatures nudge 50 and the local plod are hovering over your shoulder just itching to sling you in the clink for some cultural crime or other. If you want hot and sandy with Chavy people all around you Spain seems to make a lot more sense.
