PropertyBear
Thought this might amuse you all. Sarah Beeny of Property Ladder fame admits HPI is bad for everyone. I'm looking forward to the new series of Property Snakes... While Beeny enjoys television, she's obviously passionate about property. In spite of her own involvement in the property development industry, she thinks the rises in house prices have made everyone much worse off, that the buy-to-let phenomenon has badly damaged the market, and that the banks are irresponsible when their lending lands people with massive mortgages."For a single person on anything like a normal salary, £250,000 for a one-bedroom flat is completely unaffordable. They're never going to own somewhere unless they meet someone or have grandparents who are going to die and bought their property for two-and-sixpence in 1904. The best thing we can all hope for is that all values stay the same until salaries catch up. But I don't think that will ever happen." Beeny, who has homes in London and Yorkshire, believes the market can't keep rising so dizzily for ever and while some people have made a lot of money out of these rises, "a lot of people just get bigger mortgages and end up paying more stamp duty. Most people aren't any better off. To go from a two-bedroom flat to a three-bedroom house, you have to pay another £200k for it rather than another £30k for it. It's crazy." HousePriceLottery
Yeah, I know her business partner. Are you serious? We would love to talk to her as we are looking for celebs to front the campaign. From her recent comments it would seem she is advocating a lot of the measures we think the housing market desperately needs...

stuckmojo
the only thing is, does she not realise that it was people like her and the other irritant couple on TV to fuel this behemoth? that's a bit random that she comes up with these sentences now... dirge
Doubt she'd take things too far, channel 4 would drop her show straight away. When the crash comes i'll be dropped anyway. Maybe she can start a new show on how to avoid bailifs. Least she's telling it how it is now. One house porn celeb calling the fall around the corner does help create public awareness too. If someone wants to approach her, I'm happy to forward an email to her business partner. I suggest we need a spokesperson for the site to come up with something that highlights why she should be involved, in what capacity and kept the point as she's a busy mother, business woman and TV celebrity. Who would be the best person to do that?

Actually I want to approach her about helping PricedOut, something she'd more likely want to be involved in I hope. Most of what we are campaigning for she has just listed in the that Guardian article as things that need to be done! How can I contact you to pass on a message, your PM is switched off. You can email me on mike@pricedout.org.uk if you like. Thanks.

As I recall, Sarah Beeny always made it very clear to the amateur developers when any profit they made was down to the general market increasing or their own skill at project management and market targeting. Sure she rode the wave, good for her, but she never said HPI was a good thing unlike the nauseating Kirstie Alsop woman. The HPC message is now mainstream enough for her to say thing like this without damaging her career. She's riding the next wave. Smart girl. thecrashingisles
It's great to have someone high-profile making these points in the media. I liked what she had to say about buy-to-let especially. Beeny points the blame at the government, which she says has viewed the property boom - particularly the buy-to-let market - as some kind of solution to the impending pensions crisis. "Considering the size of the country, the population and the number of houses in it, to expect people to have the house they live in and a couple of buy-to-lets is ridiculous. There aren't enough houses and there aren't enough tenants - and the people who are renting are stuffed because they have no pension and no property in which they've invested money. For that to be the government's plan as a solution to the pension problem is ludicrous. I think the government has a responsibility to provide us with somewhere where we invest our money so when we're older we have a pension. But I don't think they even have a plan." And not just because of her looks. I don't think anyone holds her responsible for fuelling HPI, any more than they do Kevin McCloud.
eric pebble
the fact is high house prices are no good to anyone, it only benefits banks and the government. YES!!! -- As I have said for years now - the MONEYLENDERS are reeping ill-gotten gains from this whole Pyramid Scam - THEY have a lot to answer for: And TB and G Brown don't give a monkies that FRAUD lies behind most of what's been going on. "Mortgage customers 'urged to lie' - http://www.housepricecrash.co.uk/forum/ind...mp;#entry623660 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3222053.stm Edited May 9, 2007 by eric pebble
payback period
Oh come on! She's just desperate to save her reputation so she's started making a few quiet bearish comments which she can use in her defence later. At the depths of the crash her name will be mud for having contributed to the bubble so prominently.
BuyingBear
Sarah is universally acknowledged on HPC as being a fine piece of a$$, a nice posh bint, a MILF, as such there's no way she could avoid having the odd peek on here
huw
Actually she's often (always?) made it clear that the participants on her shows benefited from the rising market rather than from their own talents and efforts. In many cases it's been plain that the work done has destroyed value; only a mad masochist would be seduced into a life of property development by watching the experiences of Beeny's punters! Overall, I would say she is about as responsible for HPI as Gary Rhodes and Jamie Oliver are for the national obesity epidemic.

Quite, painting the walls magnolia and laying laminate flooring was simply something to pass the time whilst the HPI monster roared along, did they seriously think this added value in the order of tens of thousands of pounds? It may have just made the place sell quicker, the real gains were down to HPI, Hence the reason some muppets can make one hell of a hash of a job, be way over budget and months "behind schedule", which ironically is the only thing that is bailing them out, every added week meant extra HPI Beeny-points. The trend is your friend, once you realise the extend of HPI you can appreciate just how unsustainable it is.

Well that is true - IF you believe everything you are fed on TV. Do you honestly think these programs are an accurate representation of the people or their developments? I looked into the figures quoted in a couple of recent episodes - and the "all your profit comes from a rise in market" argument just didnt stand up when compared to the rise in house prices in the areas concerned. I`m not saying they didnt contribute to their profits - but that is all part of the property development game isnt it - Sarah herself has probbably made millions simply because of the rising cost of housing stock.
