The woman's account of why she received asylum in the US, and even her claim to own only one mobile phone, have also been called into serious doubt, the report said. Citing unnamed law-enforcement sources, the newspaper reported that New York prosecutors had admitted to Mr Strauss-Kahn's lawyers that there were serious problems with their case. Although you do wonder where the "strange payments" have come from.... This is exactly what some of us had predicted at the start. Once Strauss Khan was out of the French Presidential race and had quit the IMF then it was job done. The case was always liable to be dropped later. Didn't UK police get into a bit of trouble over the idea (whether true or false) that if they saw a black driver in a flashy motor they'd assume it stolen and take action? Back in the 1970s and 80s they also drew some criticism for inventing the offences of Being Irish in a Public Place and Having Long Hair After Sunset. To be fair to DSK that can be his only defence as he's admitted to a sexual encounter and there's clearly enough evidence supporting sexual contact happened. The event occurred without any witnesses present so it's his word against hers. When it comes down to it character becomes all important although that doesn't mean that people who get drug money can't get raped. Although now it appears to be moving towards her getting a pay off to stay silent. Surely the lawyer has already compromised a trial by his comments here? The word of someone with such a history against the word of the head of the IMF, it don't look good for her. DSK is never going to hold high office again so job done. Immediately after his arrest a French opinion poll revealed that something like 70% of of the population believed that he'd been set up. There is talk of him standing for the French presidency now. At the moment she does not appear that credible a witness as it seems She lied on her asylum application (this might be forgiveable on its own) She lied on her tax return to the IRS claiming for a second child that did not exist (a potential crime under US law) She had mysterious payments 'resting' in her bank account at various times upto the value of $100,000 and therefore had access to more ready cash than many US citizens She was an associate of known felons She was keen to exploit the notoriety of the case for financial gain even before Kahn was convicted Her supposed 'brother' was in fact her boyfriend She misled police, prosecutors and the grand jury about the precise course of events immediately after the alleged attack There was also a rumor in the New York Post that the alleged victim had asked her superiors if she could replace an absent colleague on the VIP floor — the floor where Strauss-Kahn occupied suite 2806. The veteran chambermaid was not out of the loop insofar as information went: she was a union member, and photographs of celebrity guests were often put up in the maids' changing rooms in the hotel basement. http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2080993,00.html One or two items might be explained away but cumulatively they are pretty deadly to the prosecution particularly if the payments to her bank account were received in the run up to the alleged sexual assault rather than after it ( ie they are not payoffs from the defence). It is therefore almost certain that Kahn will walk free within the next few weeks, For what its worth I suspect that DSK did not attack the maid but is simply a member of that class of serial womanizer who scores by propositioning women whenever opportunity arises (ie they dont waste their time seducing them with sweet talk, chocolates and flowers but go straight to the point of asking for a f*ck). His sort work on the percentage basis that its worth nine knock backs if one in ten women takes up the offer. It is not admirable behaviour but it certainly does not make him a criminal, Indeed, there are many US politicians who probably have had similar modus operandi including the widely beatified JFK. She has also admitted she lied about the events of the night in question - initially she stated she had run and hidden following the 'rape' until Mr Strauss-Kahn had left, but she now admits that she had carried on with her cleaning duties, indeed returning to the room in which she claims she was raped and cleaning that too. Also she fraudulently claimed a friend's son was her own in order to get more benefits/tax relief. NY Post article Although public opinion is defintely on the turn in the USA I am still amazed at the number of posters on some US forums who are adamant that DSK should be convicted (most dont seem to want to bother with the tiresome process of a trial).
