It has become clear that US special forces used a previously unseen stealth helicopter for the mission in order to evade Pakistani radar or being heard on the final approach to the home of the al-Qaeda terrorist.

The American troops used thermite grenades to destroy the helicopter’s main body but its rear section was left intact and taken away by the Pakistani military soon after the night raid on Monday. It is feared that if Islamabad refuses a request from Washington for the return of the tail section that the issue could turn into a diplomatic rift.

Relations are already fraught after the Seal Team Six raid entered Pakistan airspace apparently without permission and after the government was accused in some quarters of “harbouring” bin Laden.

It is believed that US Special Operations Command decided to give the operation the greatest chance of surprise by using the untested helicopters, probably modified Blackhawks.

Neighbours have said they did not hear the helicopters until they were directly overhead at 1am.

Or maybe they didn't hear them until they woke up.

Can helicopter rotor blades be made silent?

1. Silver finish makes it harder to detect on radar and by infrared sensors

2. Shape of tailboom has been altered and possibly enlarged to evade radar

3. Pan-like cover or hubcap over the rear rotor head conceals exposed machinery which is more easily picked up on radar

4. Extra blades on tail rotor reduce noise and lessen typical chopper sound

Rest of aircraft: There is speculation that the main rotor could also have had extra blades, retractable landing gear and a cover over the main rotor head

More on the stealth helicopter.

Well, if it did happen the way the story is now being spun, then OBL was clearly executed in cold blood. Nice. Not surprising though from a country where you can be executed in a hail of bullets for reaching into your pocket for your keys whilst trying to open your front door, especially if you are black (and therefore should be living rough, on the estates, or in prison.)

Apparently, to top 911 on its 10th anniversary, he was planning to derail a train. Oh the evil creative genius of it all...no dirty nuclear bombs for OBL, just a big crowbar and a couple of hefty lads!

:D

Mission update: a week after the mission took place it has become clear that the fierce gun battle was little more than one man who looked at them kinda funny.

Perhaps OBL looked kinda funny....as if not quite the bloke they were looking for ! Still - best to shoot him anyway

don't know about the women in your life but i'm struggling to believe this was a family home for 5 years, they would have had plenty of time to make it a bit nicer but it just looks like an unfinished build that some very poor blokes have been crashing in.

Pictures have apparently been leaked from a pak security person and sold to Reuters, and oh dear there seems to be 3 men there with no weapons.... http://www.reuters.com/subjects/bin-laden-compound

I thought there were supposed to be 2 men and one woman plus OBL? Must be time for another statement with new information from the mission

Ah so glad they kept the time and date on the pics, that's me sold, i was wrong there is nothing to see here. He was taken out by a brave team of patriots led by the proudest partriot of them all who MUST be re-elected.

$Million house. People living there for years. A family set-up. Never leaving the room, let alone the compound.

The squalor of the picture - oh yes OBL in used to living in caves, probably prefers it this way.

The dissonance is deafening.

Oh, those pictures are nothing compared to the Guardian's scoop.

Sounds like a brilliant and almost perfect raid if the Guardian is correct.

No children killed and only one woman dead - can't imagine the other side would have taken such care if they had mounted a similar operation (as they have in the past).

Nor this: 'they took survivors to a safe part of the compound so they weren't hurt when the wrecked helicopter was blown up'.

I guess I am one of the few people on this earth who is very happy indeed that Osama was shot dead in the manner that he was.

No it's living in filth in a million dollar compound and can't afford some LCD TV's.

He spent all his money on the hundreds of hard drives and thumb drives that were liberated...nothing left for a monitor or LCD TV...the poor b*gger was accessing the terabytes of information through an old Vic20 attached to the telly you see in the above picture. If only he had used Winzip, he could have bought a Dell with the money he saved on storage solutions...or some furniture.

Mind you, iirc, the idea for the attack on the train was on a scrap of paper, allegedly. Often the simple things in life are the best.

Another Grand Designs dream bites the dust.

The above constructions (only shown in the gif as schematic of course :P ) are comparable to the to miles upon miles of underground bunkers claimed before the Iraq invasion to have been built under the whole of Baghdad.

Apparently palatial and luxury bunkers complete with full communications and an extensive network of underground railways etc and very handy in any escape effort.

Why the tyrant didn't use them and was actually found in a backyard spider hole is anybody's guess.

Apparently they still haven't found the Baghdad bunkers - or at least they've never been mentioned since.

This shows the inside of the high-tech nerve centre from which OBL masterminded his global network.

That looks more like the picture of the "facilities" that might be offered to say a man held in captivity for years in a small number of rooms in a building in a large "compound" with high walls all round topped with barbed wire all round and with a handful of guards.

That's one of the more intelligent observations I have read about this whole thing. Ta

Didn't Blue Thunder have the silent option as well? Wasn't there a scene where it hovered outside a window of a high rise silently?

Yeah. Stealth helicopters were big in the 80s. And talking cars and motorcycles tooled up like gunships.

The way this whole Bin Laden incident is being told to us by the media makes it feel like a script from one of these dodgy 80s tv shows. Maybe that' where the CIA get its ideas from.

So you think he was there but held against his will? As a bargaining chip by the paksters and when they tried to cash him in the yanks found out where he was and neutralised their asset? Sounds plausible had he still been alive.
