I think the Iranian Islamic revolution was perhaps one of the most staggering examples of contagious mass-hysteria ever.

In a matter of days, from nothing, bare-chested men were taking to the streets in their hundreds of thousands, flailing themselves with chains, demanding that their lives be made worse!

Self-flagellation is a very Shia thing; the Sunnis don't do it much. Shia mothers even cut their own babies - they just love to see blood.

Read my post above, re: the Iranian revolution. The first wave of protest might be for democracy but I bet the islamic fundamentalists are rubbing their hands with joy in Tunisia, Egypt and Yemen. The new democratic governments will be 'weaker' than the dictators, and the fundamentalists will find it easier to create turmoil.

Well, here's hoping that the Democrats grasp the obvious point that the debts incurred by a dictatorship should die with that dictatorship. That would strengthen them massively.

Oddly, I would have thought the opposite would have been a better option. Flood the Egyptian ISPs with porn and drop parachutes of paper tissues. That will keep the masses off the streets.

Bad idea, you don't want even more hardened criminals

I am sure the UK authorities have a photo of Cheryl Cole in a new frock ready to be uploaded the moment UK rioting breaks out.

Pass me the kleenex

It is not for Western Nations to interfere with this uprising. If they turn their backs on our political and economic systems, then so be it. Calling for American Troops to get involved will solve nothing, but create more Bin Ladens, and loads of dead people. The majority of Muslims are pissed off with the West trampling all over them and nicking their resources.

I’d be worried if in Israel right now. The only way to get peace in the region, is to remove all Israelis and stick them in the Mojarve desert. Similar climate and environment. Dismantle the wailing wall and rebuild it over there. If any object, call them terrorists and shoot them.

Except it isn't really Islamic fundamentalists - it's a small clique of fundamentalists who are sponsored by the CIA to ensure instability of any system that threatens western (American) interests. The same pattern repeating itself. Fascism (whether it's Islamic fundamentalism or Hitler) is preferable for brown people so long as the money men can keep on taking their cut.

Unfortunately you may be right.

However, this is what tends to happen when you suppress freedom and democracy for too long, the extremists take over.

It is very interesting to note that while the US preaches freedom and democracy, it seems to be one rule for them and another for many other countries in the world, especially ones where they have vested interests. They seem only too happy to befriend and prop up authoritarian regimes at the expense of the desires of the local people, especially in the Middle East, if it benefits them and any 'allies' they might have in the region.

However, I'm sure the US and Israel would love nothing more than Islamic Fundamentalists to get into power across North Africa. It would give them the perfect excuse to exercise their hegemonic aims in the region.

But, but, I thought the Israeli's where the good guys!? They fight the evil terrorists don't they?

What? They're a bunch of invading, conquesting, ethic-cleansing, militaristic, human-right oppressing, war-mongering, non-disclosed WMD possessing, religious fundamentalists who use terror to oppress the indigenous people?

Well in that case, Mojave desert it is.

Bread and circuses is effectively what the oil rich states do to quell descent. Most arabs with a full belly, someone else to do the work, and a Yemeni maid to sodomise are not going to jeopardise that little number.

The risk comes from the huge numbers of migrant underclasses. I inspect contractor camps and they are shit holes - 6 to a room, poor sanitation, no recreational activities. Easy prey for the radicalised Iman preaching hate.

Egypt has done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major internet economy: cut itself off from the web to try to silence a protest movement.

http://www.thisislon...ock-protests.do

As of 12:30 a.m. (local time) last night, there was almost no Internet traffic going into or out of the country. In what one blogger called "an action unprecedented in Internet history," Egypt, a country of 80 million, has been nearly severed from the Web.

What's the Twitter and "social networking sites such as Facebook" obsessed BBC going to report about now?

Depends where the ISP is... or have they shut down external phone-lines to?

I worked for the manufacturer of the 'line cards' that populate the racks inside telephone exchanges. A typical card would carry 64 phone lines/numbers, and each had a data channel and a 'POTS' (Plain Old Telephone System) channel. The system was designed to failsafe such that if the data stuff went offline then the POTS should function as normal. I assume that it's a breeze to deliberately switch off the data channels from a control center while leaving the POTS untouched. So, no internet but the normal olde worlde phones would still work.

Exactly. That's what they were asking for in Iran in 1979 and that's what they got for a few short weeks. The islamic revolution there appeared to come from nowhere, a kind of male-only mass-hysteria whipped up by an evil old man who'd been exiled from Iran and nobody in the west had even heard of.

Yes - obviously what they really need is tyrannical western-backed dictators.

Ever stopped to think that meddling in other countries' affairs and propping up nasty dictatorships actually makes things worse in the longer run? Nope, didn't expect you had ...

You are brainless and I claim my £5 ....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_Fatah%E2%80%93Hamas_conflict

Crowds of locals looted several former Fatah buildings and facilities while Hamas gunmen celebrated their victory in the streets of Gaza and burned down the houses of prominent Fatah leaders. The heavy fighting of the previous day largely subsided but at least two more Fatah members were executed in apparent revenge killings, one of them thrown to his death from a rooftop. In Nablus, Fatah militiamen retaliated by killing a Hamas activist in the morning.

Egyptian men will simply not accept a ban on access to online porn.

You could be on to something - cutting off the supply of filth to a tinderbox of frustrated young men is not going to lower tensions any time soon. Maybe installing Bree Olsen as the new President might sort things out?

Seriously though, the more repressed the country, the more depraved the pron searches - didn't Pakistan come top of the league for "Camel sex" searches?

I used to work with a Jewish Guy who had an interesting outlook on all this. He would say;

Put six jewish guys in a room and you will have 6 guys come out with 6 different opinions

Put six arabs in a room together and you have a bloodbath

You are correct and its not just Egyptians. One of the first things we were told on arrival was do not even go to the bog without locking your PC!

I sit near this disgusting Turkish American dwarf who does no work but spends all day collecting pictures of Penny Lancaster (Rod Stewarts wife)

I am always fascinated how 325 millions of Arabs are "fascinated", "concerned", "dominated", "hate, ""whatever" by 8 millions of Israelis ......

The same with the land. Sinai is about 25 000 km2, but they are still concerned with 30 km2 in West Bank .....

It is like Germany asking to get the East Poland back as before 1945 ....

Brainless ....

Coincidentially I had this debate with a Lebanese colleague (who at least understands the concept of debate) on Wednesday. Whilst the Arab World did not create the state of Israel it did much to strengthen it by purging itself of its own Jewish populations who naturally sought refuge in Israel further legitmising and strengthen the state.
