Why Agius and not Bob? Bob Diamond was runing Barcap when this happened but Agius is just the chairman and does not have an executive role. He has falen on his sword to protect Bob. Bob was running the show and he needs to go. I cannot see how he can survive.

That's what Sky was saying too, apparently Bob can't go now as it would be really bad for the Chairman and Chief Exec to go. What they going to do when the Black Maria turns up?

I'll go for Sir Michael Rake as the replacement.

He ticks all the boxes for me.

Sir Michael Rake is Chairman of BT Group, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills and easyJet, as well as a non-executive director of Barclays PLC, McGraw-Hill Inc and the Financial Reporting Council. He is also chairman of the private equity oversight group the Guidelines Monitoring Committee. BT pays him an annual salary of £600,000.

BT fat cat, bank, rating agency, private equity and on Cameron's economic advisory council

safe pair of hands and can be relied upon to do the necessary white washing.

Give it a few more days though and they will find a junior trader or techie to blame.

Makes me laugh the establishment in this country. We know all the tricks. Its like the hypnotist in Little Britain "look into my eyes" who thinks he's hypnotising people and he isn't.

He was planning to retire next year anyway so this is really a meaningless sop.

They may as well have axed Malvis Higgins from typing as it will make as much difference to the way Barclays operates.

The usual round of fudges and tokenism to pretend things are going to change even while desperately hoping that things can continue as before.

Their problem is that I have a suspicion that the rest of the world is not going to be swallowing the crap that the denizens of the banks in the City of London spout for much longer

How many days a year does, did he work 20 ish for X thousand a year, he'll get the money he lost out on some how, so loosing a non exec part timer means the chief exec "can't go", how thick are we supposed to be.

Apparently he's 65 so it wouldn't be much of a surprise if he goes under retirement rather than as a resignation. He might even have been due to go at any rate (after posting and then reading a bit more of the thread I've noticed that an earlier poster has mentioned that he was due to go next year).

On the radio there was some banker type saying the chairman is leaving because someone had to go (implying as a sacrificial lamb/scapegoat sort of thing).

Nobody mentioned that in any event he was due to go next year

So he would be going because someone had to go but seemingly there's no real acceptance of any blame or anything. Then there was the claim that it was a boardroom decision so it's difficult to know what to believe if anything - as usual there seems to be a tremendous amount of muddying going on.

Then there was the "regulator" reported as saying that (apparently) there are/were no rules against the interest rate manipulation - so why were they fined (since the news came out they must have suddenly realised hey what were we as "regulators" doing then  ),

Apparently there are another 20 or so banks similarly under investigation around europe - the only surprise is that it's the first time they've been mentioned.

FWIW apparently what they call Peston's blog has more information - how accurate it is has got to be anybody's guess.

Someone asked on another thread what happens to all those banking fines. According to the radio there's a banking scheme that just funnels the fines straight back into the banking sector.

Apparently the funds don't go back to the taxpayer or to compensate the people who have been cheated.

Who could have guessed!

Agius, who's married to a Rothschild, attended the latest Bilderberg meeting a month or so ago in the company of Justice Minister Ken Clarke and Peter Mandelson.

He also serves on the BBC's executive board.

Paxman, Peston and co will never reveal any of the above. All hail Auntie, that bastion of truth.

I see the media is now suggesting that with Agius gone Bob Diamond's head will be next to roll.

This isn't what we want. What we want is prosecutions and reform.

They can shove their resignations where the sun don't shine.

Relax, they can both still be prosecuted after they are no longer working for Barclays.

Criminal prosecutions would be ideal, but these guys are well connected and the sphere of influence is large. However, there will be private prosecutions aplenty. What we need is a change in law to allow salary and bonus to be recouped at the individual level.

I wouldnt mock the Rochschilds, they have bravely served the Country with their personal person....Edmund Agius' father in law received a medal of honour:

Major Edmund Leopold de Rothschild, CBE, TD (2 January 1916 – 17 January 2009) was an English financier, a member of the prominent Rothschild banking family of England, and a recipient of the Victoria Medal of Honour (VMH), given by the Royal Horticultural Society.

BBC Breakfast Business presenter woman tried to spin the Barclays fine as positive as it would "help pay down the nations debt." WTF?
