Donald Trump has signed a policy directive "to lead an innovative space exploration programme to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars". White House spokesman Hogan Gidley made the announcement which was followed by a speech by Mr Trump. He was joined by one of the first men to land on the Moon, Buzz Aldrin, and Harrison Schmitt, known as "Jack", who is the last living crew member of the Apollo 17 mission, which landed in 1972. At the White House, Mr Trump said: "Forty-five years ago, almost to the minute, Jack became one of the last Americans to land on the Moon. "The directive I am signing today will refocus the space programme on human exploration and discovery. "This time we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint, we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars and perhaps someday to many worlds beyond." It will be really interesting to see how they do it with modern technology. The Clinton Foundation will probably scupper it though, like they do everything else . There haven't been many technological changes that'll make much of a difference. Sure, a new rocket will have a lot more computing on it than the Saturn V ever did, but the basic energy requirements that drive the designs are the same. If there are any differences it'll be in going for a different approach that's not necessarily technology-driven (e.g. have a station in Earth orbit rather going for a launch pad to Moon model). Where technological advances will make a difference will probably be in what can be done once people are on the Moon, i.e. can gather and analyse much more data. Errol Posted December 13, 2017 Share Posted December 13, 2017 Russia and China are working together on space exploration and the former plans for a moon base by 2024. Presumably the US is just realising that it needs to keep up! China has plans for its own manned space station by 2019, and later moon bases. The economic benefits of this type of activity are enormous, the spin offs from Apollo were huge. I seriously do wonder why as a country we’d rather pay housing benefits to fat chavs and their corrupt landlords rather than spending it on genuine high tech initiatives. The fact that it could be done with 1960s technology just a few years after kicking off the Apollo program shows that it wasn't that difficult. Expensive yes, difficult no. It should be Mars next, that one's a real challenge that might actually result in some new technology. Or something really wild like a close-to-light-speed robotic probe to Proxima Centauri. The moon is the right place to go, because if properly developed it can become the gateway to space. Launching ships to mars from the moon would be much less costly than from earth. The real target should be to build a self sustainable base on the moon from which we can cheaply explore space. Heading for mars in a pissing contest like we did for the moon would just be another waste of money. The exploration of space (moon/mars/anywhere else included) suffers from one fundamental problem and that is currently there is no compelling short term economic reason to do so. One is mine and the other is generate energy. The moon would be great for generating energy. For example nuclear reactors could be built without any shields. There is the possibility of some other stuff but it is remote/unlikely. For example if you needed large scale lower gravity manufacturing. Funn3r Posted December 16, 2017 Share Posted December 16, 2017 Well I am an IT guy and years ago when hardware was not so advanced we had a huge problem in real life with static electricity. The tabloids were always full of daft stories about the mini-skirted hotty from accounts whose knickers kept sparking and crashing the mainframe. I didn't have to wear a purple wig but I did have to wear a conductive wriststrap.
