Bruce Banner
https://news.sky.com/story/trump-orders-nasa-to-return-to-moon-to-lay-foundations-for-mars-trip-11167181 The US President has ordered NASA to plan a new manned mission to the Moon, 45 years after the last one - Apollo 17. Donald Trump has signed a policy directive "to lead an innovative space exploration programme to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars". White House spokesman Hogan Gidley made the announcement which was followed by a speech by Mr Trump. He was joined by one of the first men to land on the Moon, Buzz Aldrin, and Harrison Schmitt, known as "Jack", who is the last living crew member of the Apollo 17 mission, which landed in 1972. At the White House, Mr Trump said: "Forty-five years ago, almost to the minute, Jack became one of the last Americans to land on the Moon. Image:President Trump holds up 'Space Policy Directive 1' after signing it "Today we pledge that he will not be the last, and I suspect we will be finding some other places to land other than the Moon. "The directive I am signing today will refocus the space programme on human exploration and discovery. "It is an important step in returning American astronauts to the Moon, for the first time since 1972 for long time exploration and use. "This time we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint, we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars and perhaps someday to many worlds beyond." Image:US President Donald Trump holds up an astronaut toy alongside former US Senator and Apollo 17 Astronaut Jack Schmitt He said the mission would inspire others and showed NASA would keep the pioneer spirit alive. He added: "Today the same spirit beckons us to begin new journeys of exploration and discovery, to lift our eyes all the way up to the heavens and imagine the possibilities waiting in those big beautiful stars if we dream big. "This is a giant step towards that inspiring future and reclaiming America's proud destination in space." Mr Trump said America was the leader and would remain the leader. Bruce Banner
I'm looking forward to it and really hope it happens soon. It will be really interesting to see how they do it with modern technology. The Clinton Foundation will probably scupper it though, like they do everything else . There haven't been many technological changes that'll make much of a difference. Sure, a new rocket will have a lot more computing on it than the Saturn V ever did, but the basic energy requirements that drive the designs are the same. If there are any differences it'll be in going for a different approach that's not necessarily technology-driven (e.g. have a station in Earth orbit rather going for a launch pad to Moon model). Where technological advances will make a difference will probably be in what can be done once people are on the Moon, i.e. can gather and analyse much more data. Yeah, and like, maybe like, if Trump said like, he'd build a "big, beautiful wall" like, he was having an underhand jibe at people naive enuff to believe him. Hrrrrrr. Hrrrrrr. We really have to got to the religious fervor phase here:- - Bible says gays bad. - Gay Christian says "no, God / Jesus doesn't mean that" Compare: - Trump says we've been to the moon. - Moon-Landing-Denier Trumpian says "no, Trump is having a underhand jib." Or, what about: - Christians believe the bible is the word of God; - Christians who find anything wrong in the bible say "well, that version is written by a man and not God." Compare: - Trump says he fired Flynn cos he lied to the FBI (incriminating himself in obstruction of the course of justice). - Trumpians who praise his use of social media as a way to hear the actual word of Trump say "Donald doesn't write his own Tweets" Quote Donald Trump has signed a policy directive "to lead an innovative space exploration programme to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars". by which he means we can use the proceeds from the cheese sales to fund the chocolate run. Errol
Russia and China are working together on space exploration and the former plans for a moon base by 2024. Presumably the US is just realising that it needs to keep up! China has plans for its own manned space station by 2019, and later moon bases. So soon we can look forward to turf wars and Nuclear power bickering on the moon.

dgul
Quote We choose to go to the Moon! ... We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win ... JFK lasted 14 months after saying that. Just sayin'.

The economic benefits of this type of activity are enormous, the spin offs from Apollo were huge. I seriously do wonder why as a country we’d rather pay housing benefits to fat chavs and their corrupt landlords rather than spending it on genuine high tech initiatives. Lurkst
I'm all for it, the Apollo landings were among my earliest memories and got me into science and engineering at a young age. There are a stack of moon missions planned over the next couple of years, exciting stuff... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_missions_to_the_Moon

Dorkins
What's the point of going to the Moon again? The fact that it could be done with 1960s technology just a few years after kicking off the Apollo program shows that it wasn't that difficult. Expensive yes, difficult no. It should be Mars next, that one's a real challenge that might actually result in some new technology. Or something really wild like a close-to-light-speed robotic probe to Proxima Centauri. The moon is the right place to go, because if properly developed it can become the gateway to space. Launching ships to mars from the moon would be much less costly than from earth. The real target should be to build a self sustainable base on the moon from which we can cheaply explore space. Heading for mars in a pissing contest like we did for the moon would just be another waste of money. The exploration of space (moon/mars/anywhere else included) suffers from one fundamental problem and that is currently there is no compelling short term economic reason to do so. It would be better to come up with a plan on how money is going to be made colonising the moon, and then execute it.

Gigantic Purple Slug
If you actually think about it there are really only 2 economic things you can do on the moon. One is mine and the other is generate energy. The moon would be great for generating energy. For example nuclear reactors could be built without any shields. There is the possibility of some other stuff but it is remote/unlikely. For example if you needed large scale lower gravity manufacturing. There is probably quite a bit of science that could be done better there, but its not an economic driver.

Why do the women on Moonbase wear purple wigs? The purple wigs were simply part of the women's Moonbase uniforms. Wigs were very popular in the late 1960's, and Sylvia Anderson envisioned that wigs might someday become part of a uniform. Sylvia designed the Moonbase outfits and the wigs, and has been quoted as saying that the purple wigs came about simply because she liked them! There have been attempts to give the wigs some sort of scientific explanation, like they protect the wearers from electromagnetic fields caused from the Moonbase command sphere equipment. However, besides being rather farfetched, these explanations always fail to explain why Col. Foster never needed any protection while he was in command of Moonbase! - https://ufoseries.com/faq.html#
Funn3r
Well I am an IT guy and years ago when hardware was not so advanced we had a huge problem in real life with static electricity. The tabloids were always full of daft stories about the mini-skirted hotty from accounts whose knickers kept sparking and crashing the mainframe. I didn't have to wear a purple wig but I did have to wear a conductive wriststrap. I always thought the cool purple wigs were to protect the UFO tri-scanulation equipment from the humans not the other way around.
