Agreed. The sheer lack of viewings struck me and the desperate hope for a spring bounce. Thought "dinny" sounded like a HPCer or spouse of one!

Think this is where the VIs stand to take the biggest kicking and slow elimination of their credibility for an entire generation. There are people seeing and reading one thing in the press but their own lives do not reflect the same reality.

The BBC in particular has collapsed professionally IMO. The failure to question the received and constantly-reiterated wisdom that incessantly-rising house prices are "a good thing" is a serious failure of journalistic integrity. As is the reporting of spin and opinion as "fact".

I read something similar on UKp a similar parenting site.

Someone suggested that a person lowered their asking price because their house wasn't selling.

The response was something along the lines of THEIR price was fine, it had already been reduced. The problem was the owners of the property they wanted to buy weren't budging on theirs.

I wonder if those owners are now having to lower their prices - I suspect they are.

Another thread demonstrating the potential of the 'net.

Threads like this and others covering politics and economics appear in the general areas of many interest specific sites.

This "short circuiting" of the traditional means of information dissemination is still in it's infancy but when the majority use it as do many here, then hopefully, "spin" and the rest will be out the window.

It went on in July 2004 - I kid you not!! [...] It has a new kitchen (never used as we moved out last Xmas!) and new bathroom (white, nothing to dislike - separate shower cubicle, bath etc) - a house the same size just a few doors down has sold even though it needed work. It was on at the same price as ours and we know it went for just £5K under the asking price (so £5K OVER our new asking price).

We have been on the market since April '05 and haven't had even a sniff of an offer, despite dropping the price 3 times. Have been getting very, very low about the whole thing, it is particularly frustrating as I spend so much time doing stuff with dd1 miles away from where we live. We are now making radical plans to landscape the garden (we live on a hill) in the hope that this will encourage buyers

There is not one single person - estate agent, neighbour, friend, mumsnetter - who can see one single reason why our house has not sold! Honestly - it's a complete mystery, especially considering the neighbouring houses that have sold.

Maybe their neighbours saw the writing on the wall and are realistic, and know the difference between advertised and sold prices.

It's completely unfathomable, new kitchens, gardens, bathrooms, that covers all bases, what else could it be, it's a MYSTERY!

A lot of these reports by the BBC aren't really examples of journalism, simply the regurgitation of stories/press releases from other sources. Maybe they're a bit short of staff (or short of good staff anyway)?

I know numerous journos - several well know ones - and virtually all get their stories from:

1. The newspapers.

2. Press releases from companies, politicians, VIs.

They just take it in spoon fed. I used to see very little analysis in my days working in TV land of what was behind the stories.

There has been a huge increase in the numbers of so-called 'trained' journos in the past 10 years - basically, more people chasing less jobs so they get paid peanuts and all think they are working for 'World In Action' when they are simply churning out stuff that is fed to them.

Unfortunately, regurgitation of press releases appears to be an excellent example of current journalistic standards.

Good luck for all those selling. having spent most of 2005 in this process I know how stressful it can be. Hope you all get buyers soon.

I thought home ownership was all about freedom and expression and all those other wooly things etc., sounds pretty miserable if you have to move.

If renting stays cheaper than buying it's a serious longer term alternative. There's something quite rewarding about getting piss stains on someone else's carpet. And then moving out.

what does that mean? Their budget IS unrealistic if there are no properties in the price bracket. Get with the program! What they really mean is probably something like this: prices are ridiculously high, and they can't believe that they can't get anything for what would otherwise be a reasonable amount of money.

I live in this area and think I have identified the house in question. I won't post the link here because I think they deserve some privacy.

If it is the right house then Yes''' surprisingly enough the other two houses did sell for the price the poster said they did (£270K and £275K).

The house is in a very good area and on a popular road - zoned for some of the best primary and secondary schools in the area.

I can't see anything wrong with the house (other than the fact it has gone up in price by about £100K in 2/3 years).

Although it is over priced ( I wouldn't pay more than £170K for the house), it is reasonably priced compared to others in the local area.

Maybe the neighbours just got lucky - I don't think he/she will though. Market has come to a complete standstill here.

We are about 10 minutes from the M6 and 10 minutes from Manchester airport. From the house, you can walk to the metrolink - takes you straight into central Manchester in about 15 minutes.

Dinny - a woman I go swimming with did that [sold to rent] in the early 90s and she's still renting!! Not saying that will happen to you of course, just reminded me of her telling me!

According to the press prices are going up again aren't they? Not that I'm convinced, we've dropped ours by £15K!

I think you may have got the wrong idea about the house. As I said in my previous post, I think I have identified the house.

It is a very nice house in a very popular area and two other houses on the same road have sold for similar prices in the last few months.

The motorway and airport are easy to reach but it certainly isn't on the flight path or anywhere near traffic from the motorway. The tramline is also very popular and makes getting into manchester very easy but the house is not bothered by the tram at all (if it is the right house)

I would say this house is correctly priced for the area (although obviously it is priced very high - but so is everything else in the area). It isn't priced over the highest price achieved on that road.

If this house can't sell after over a year then I would say the market is really stalling in the area. I have seen houses locally priced at lower asking prices than last year. I think this vendor has left it too late and will probably have to take a cut in order to sell.

We're a little tongue in cheek, but we're just making observations too, volumes are down, prices too high and things aren't moving, yet people will talk about kitchens, bathrooms, landscaping, trams, motorways and airports, the price hardly seems elemental in the discussion, as if it has been decreed, nor do prices have any relation to the fact the whole market is on it's back, no doubt that's due to the weather.

I'm not specifically having a go at your property, no single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood. A fall in the market may actually help if you intend to move up the ladder, a percentage fall will reduce its price greater than your own drop.
