Will the next pope be black?

Pope Benedict XVI's resignation has only been news for a couple of hours, but already the odds are available on the identity of his successor. Leading the pack is Cardinal Francis Arinze. According to William Hill, Arinze is 2/1 favourite to take over the post.

Pope Benedict XVI[/b]' timestamp='1360580893' post='909257038']

Why not? I've done my bit and now it's time to put my feet up and enjoy my Vatican pension and look forward to a relaxing holiday.

Rumours suggest you're appearing on BBC's masterchef - specialist dish Ex-Benedict.

Didn't 'The Prophecy of the Popes' of Saint Malachy say that resigning Pope Benedict XVI is the penultimate Pope - in other words the incoming Pope, now, is the last Pope before {dramatic music} "The End of the World".

If Dougal don't screw it up then this guy would be a close contender

Mumsnet beat you:

Ah there's loads including the communion wafer scandal that broke shortly after the resignation announcement.

Add-on : this organisation under Ratzinger has serious questions regarding sexual abuse and burying evidence as highlighted recently in a Texas abuse case. Maybe more of this stuff was going through the wash and caused the him to make the unprecedented jump.

As Cardinal Ratzinger was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the sexual abuse of minors by priests was his responsibility to investigate from 2001, when that charge was given to the CDF by Pope John Paul II.[5] Before given this charge, Cardinal Ratzinger was theoretically privy to all sexual abuse cases within the Church. As Prefect of the CDF, Canon Law directed Bishops to report sexual abuse cases involving priests in their diocese to Cardinal Ratzinger. However, due to the obscurity of Canon Law, even within the Church, it is unknown whether this directive was actually followed.

As part of the implementation of the norms enacted and promulgated on April 30, 2001 by Pope John Paul II,[6] on May 18, 2001 Ratzinger sent a letter to every bishop in the Catholic Church.[7][8] This letter reminded them of the strict penalties facing those who revealed confidential details concerning enquiries into allegations against priests of certain grave ecclesiastical crimes, including sexual abuse, which were reserved to the jurisdiction of the Congregation. The letter extended the prescription or statute of limitations for these crimes to ten years. However, when the crime is sexual abuse of a minor, the "prescription begins to run from the day on that which the minor completes the eighteenth year of age."[9] Lawyers acting for two alleged victims of abuse in Texas claim that by sending the letter the cardinal conspired to obstruct justice

Ah there's loads including the communion wafer scandal that broke shortly after the resignation announcement.

Pope Benedict XVI has decided to throw in the Holy towel, and Twitter is going crazy for Pope jokes:

Reports that The Pope has resigned to take up the soon to be vacant interim manager post at Chelsea are as yet unconfirmed

Papal resignation belated attempt to push Richard III out of international news headlines.

Reports that the new Pope will be selected via an Idols/X Factor type-reality show

Looks like he just poped in before he poped back out again.

Has this happened before?

Although never understood how you can do a job until dead because as some point you are incapable of work.

The pope is a non job. Its just a face for corruption and child abuse to hide behind.

Very interesting isn't it - this man is an ultra conservative in an ultra conservative organisation.

On one hand I can't ever see him giving things up - some say he was the power behind the throne of the last pope. Some even say he plotted to get the job.

On the other hand, perhaps he is all too aware of what happened when the last pope became too infirm to do the job and does not want to repeat things. I suppose, in some respects, he may even have some chance of influencing who his successor is.

Yes apparently he urged Pope John Paul II to do the same thing and he recently appointed a lot of cardinals from the developing world who will influence the selection of the next pope.

The DM has a list of likely candidates with their 'interests' - most of them look positioned somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun.

I was going to post an image about putting all religions in the trash here... but when I google imaged 'religion in trash' the most bizarre, and awful, image came up.... which I am not sure is real or fake.

It appears to show a dead woman, bound to a bed, covered in blood with an enormous wooden crucifix rammed into her mouth. I am not posting it as it looks like a murder scene and, if genuine, is a truly brutal and horrific thing. There are some sick feckers around.

I looked at that horrible image TMT, and there's no reason to believe it's real.

She could easily be holding it in her mouth and be covered in Hollywood horror film makeup. It's sensationalist, sexploitation-porn trash, but there's no reason to believe it is real any more than the images you might get if you typed in 'pulp novella cover' on Google image search, with safe search off, so, personally, I would fear not.

Thanks - I thought it was more likely some set-up scene for a film or book or whatever. It could put someone off being bound and gagged and tied to a bed for life!
