Ministers are planning a massive sell-off of Britain's Government-owned forests as they seek to save billions of pounds to help cut the deficit, The Sunday Telegraph has learnt.

So when can we buy shares in our own assets again?

"huge expansion in the number of Center Parcs-style holiday villages, golf courses, adventure sites and commercial logging operations"

Turn the UK into a tourist destination .... It's what they did with wales ... no jobs left so make it a holiday destination...

What a waste of space this government is. Our debt isn't as bad as they are telling us. The damage that this bunch are doing will never be reversed, pure and utterly evil.

These forests belong to the people, not to the government. I can see access to huge forests being denied and natural habitats being destroyed.

When will this misery end

No, it's much worse.

it isn't as bad as you think. The governments own figures show that they are on target to balance the budget by 2014, which proves they are cutting too quick.

They Tories want to offer tax cuts to the rich before the next election.

Government figures don't include extra liabilities. These already include PFI, unfunded pension obligations. With these, it's around 5 times as bad as the Gov figures.

They also seem to include a guarantee for BT & other organisations' pensions sice the recent court ruling.

There should be a balanced budget NOW. The debt can't be paid off, so let inflation reduce the debt and effect of interest. Oh, and Land Value Tax to replace most taxes.

When the people figure out that they are being raped.

I doubt the British will ever have the balls or solidarity to stop them. The sheeple are too divided by the false left/right paradgm just for starters.

The French are refusing to work because they want even more state dependency but at least there is enough solidarity between the people to challange Sarkozy

The British are finished IMO. Lazy, brainwashed, supine and cowardly

Hate to disappoint but, your preferred choice of the last government was already selling off acres and acres of forestry commission run woodland and forest, usually by sealed bids, that often went for a mind-blowingly low figure. I know this because I bought quite a bit of it.

Edit to add: They were also doing the same with huge swathes of MOD land and buildings.

Nope, they have to cut/slash it by the next election because there is another pile of sh*t waiting for us just around the corner.

Mind you Labour will get back in, and blow all the cash again! laugh.gif

Which part is stupid the national socialist commitment and leadership in environmental or their support for national parks ?

A brutal and fairly unrecognised fact is that the environmentalist movement is, not new, not original, not thought-provoking and certainly is not cool.

Excuse the pun.

I've got the following about the US (Wiki), their national parks started long before the Nazis showed up. Could it be that this movement started with the rise of workers' holidays?

National parks and national monuments in the United States were originally individually managed under the auspices of the Department of the Interior. The movement for an independent agency to oversee these federal lands was spearheaded by business magnate and conservationist Stephen Mather, as well as J. Horace McFarland. With the help of journalist Robert Sterling Yard, Mather ran a publicity campaign for the Department of the Interior. They wrote numerous articles that praised the scenic qualities of the parks and their possibilities for educational, inspirational, and recreational benefits.[4] This campaign resulted in the creation of a National Park Service. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that mandated the agency "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations."[5] Mather became the first director of the newly formed NPS.[6]

How do you find out more about this?

The surveyors dealing with it tipped me off that if I had any spare money it was going for peanuts. I don't think they advertise the sales very widely at all, ordinarily.

There are also grants to cut down pines, sell the wood, and replace with domestic deciduous trees. If the deal wasn't sweet enough already.

Sounds like farm land owners being paid to keep hedges (that they would already keep anyway) thanks to EU grants.

You dont think their own figures are a bit, er, optimistic.

A massive recovery in tax receipts?

For what benefit - votes?

The rich are a small percentage of the UK and most of them are not allowed to vote anyhow being foreign!

And you think your vote bothers the richest?

Time to make more Amanita muscaria soup.

Terrible. All of England used to be forest. Now its farmland. What a waste.

Most Forestry commision land ISNT historic woods anyway, its mostly pine plantations planted around WW2. Most of it is already intensively logged.

It was mostly lost hundreds of years ago. If it weren't for coal being industrialised when it was, we would have lost it all. But if we did still have large forests, you'd have things like bears and wolves to worry about. Though if it were in a national park, it would probably be ok. I don't see how there is so little forest coverage in national parks personally, farms I understand - there's no short term gain for farmers to keep them. You see more trees in towns than in the majority of the intensively managed countryside.
