  1. The former, I would say. That one was with Foxtons who kite fly with the best of them. A few years back, I very reluctantly went to view a flat to rent with Foxtons. I have always boycotted them, but the missus was really keen. Was on for £250 a week and I said "I don't think it's worth more than £150". His response was: "well that's a good offer, I'll put it to the landlord". i.e. they fly the kites just to see if you are stupid enough to bite.
  2. The site that will beat them is the one that doesn't need estate agents and gets mass traction,
  3. I don't know why they don't have a 'report this listing' button. That way they would crowdsource the data cleanup. Particularly annoying are: * to good to be true obvious honeytrap (london lettings on for 400 days) * wrong listings (flat as a house)
  4. Are you in the market for one of these, or just doing this for the good of the forum? I've been noticing things moving in the slighly off-prime De Beauvoir: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33409483.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/new-homes-for-sale/property-22808961.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-22609848.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-36572885.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33427090.html http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-21940347.html
  5. I wondered why she registered the domain in Melbourne: Edit: removed the address
  6. Household income in highest bracket, savings in the highest bracket, can't afford a house.
  7. Friends of mine lived in Stockwell. A gang broke the door down and held them at knifepoint while they robbed the house and loaded it into the victims car. Car was found abandoned on an estate about half a mile away.
  8. I cannot believe some of the dross being offered out to the 'high end corporate market' desperate to rent some of Britain's finest housing stock. So I thought perhaps we could have a special Olympic sh1tehole thread? I'll open the bidding with this gem: £1200 per week, In Enfield http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-22549224.html PS we should have really set up a register of Olympic landlords so that we could record them and make sure we never let anything from anyone who evicted their tenants for a quick buck
  9. 2 Parents earning 40,000 each, 1 child. Take home 60,523. Tax rate 24% 1 Parent earning 80,000, 1 parent at home, 1 child. Take home 53,181. Tax rate 34%. Why does the tax system take 37% more tax from a single earner family? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/9278614/CSJ-Lib-Dems-are-thwarting-marriage-tax-breaks.html However, Liberal Democrats oppose the plan. Their leader Nick Clegg has dismissed the demands of traditionalist Conservatives, arguing that couples marry for love, not to “get some cash back from the state” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/9237330/Labour-rejects-tax-breaks-for-married-couples.html The Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, also warned that he would not back a tax break for married couples because this would “penalise” single mothers and reward abusive husbands who leave their wives for a new partner.
  10. I agree with part of what they are saying, but it should be: * Harmonisation of capital gains and income tax at 30% * end to all tax deductions (including interest payments) * land tax * end vat * higher tax free allowance Result = massively simplified pro growth tax system with no incentive to creatively account to minimise tax liabilities.
  11. Been looking around london prices and it is surprising just how much commercial property is listed as residential. Presumably, this is commercial owners trying to find a greater fool in the residential market having failed in the commercial market? It would have to be a rich fool, because no-one would lend on a residential mortgage, right?
  12. 1. Get rightmove to offer a by sqft/sqm search option, rather than by bedrooms * 2. Get govt to declare local council funded deposits ultra vires. * New 25 year old girl at work announced her intention to buy a house put in an extra room and make loads of money. Trouble is, it has worked for her parents. so why should she doubt it. Most london houses/flats are listed this way for foreign buyers, but you can't search by it. Getting rightmove on board could help a lot. Any ideas?
  13. Hello E Herts, W Essex, Looking for a shorter commute and it seems roydon is a well placed station, 30 mins into liverpool street: http://www.commuterguide.co.uk/counties/hertfordshire/roydon Presumably, every other mug has thought of this, so can you advise on the area? Anything to avoid? Is the commute overflowing with other people doing the same (don't think I could take the Cam->Kings X line, far too busy)? Also,
  14. Good find, OP. With these 4x times mortgages available, I think I might be able to manage to get a mortgage on it. Only took me a phd and six years experience to achieve that salary. I think deserve a house after working hard for it.
  15. Looking in London I noticed most flats are advertised in Sq M. Clearly the Chinese are not fooled by an extra bedroom.
  16. I would think its because the only people buying have a large deposit/large amount of equity to trade up. ie. its the old 'no new entrants to the market' which is pushing the avg price up, not the increase in the values of homes. Easily confirmed or not by FTB numbers, I suppose.
  17. Yes. I will not buy a house not in a walkable/mass transit city. I think anything in the countryside will see price reductions due to this oil denominator - even though that is where I currently rent.
  18. Although everyone here is focusing on the systemic risk, I can't help felling the IO crowd have won. My example is a friend who bought in N London at peak prices on 100% IO (2007 I think). He is now paying £650 a month. I am looking to move back to London for work and similar flats in the same road are on for £2000 a month. Thats about 16,800 per year saved over renting which goes a long way to creating a repayment fund.
  19. Was about to say thats almost a london price, but then I saw 'store' - missing from all london flats. Clearly a bargain.
  20. This is rental so not sure it counts, but checkout the rent to live in a static caravan.... http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-33697924.html
  21. Isn't the clue in catchment area? Presumably this is worth > £30,000 pa to someone with a few kids.
  22. I cannot believe newsnight segued from mansion tax to planning reform without making any connections. Property rich can hoard without paying opportunity cost whilst simultaneously preventing all new development.
