Habeas Domus
One thing I have found about bulk buying DE razors is that they can't be stored indefinitely, after 6-12 months they start getting noticeably less sharp, presumably small amounts of rust buildup on the edge. 19 year mortgage 8itch
Interesting. What model razor did you buy? What was wrong - just too lethal? It's an Edwin Jagger. The razor is fine but I just keep it trimmed at the sexually frustatrated engineering student look rather than a full on swampy with a beard trimmer so the razor is sort of redundant. According to oligtroph I need fresh blades.

erat_forte
I have been stropping a disposable blade on the palm of my hand before each shave, it is lasting very well. Saves a few pennies!
The Masked Tulip
I used an EJ for about 4 months until the thread snapped where the head meets the handle it was this model, apologies for the image size. That is interesting as I read, on different threads, people saying the same thing happened - that the head snapped off. One person complained and got sent a replacement but others seemed unhappy that they broke so easily.
anonguest
My first reaction to seeing the title of this thread was "can you still actually buy razor blades anymore???! Does anyone still use them?" - thinking of 'proper' single blades, wrapped in paper, in a pack of ten The sort of thing I used when starting to shave a long time ago (even though modern plastic/disposables had already been invented!). Then I realised it was referring to modern disposables or cartridge types. Now that I think about it I'll have to have a check to see if they are still sold, next time I am in the chemist, or whether the Health & Safety nazis have had them banned too? Nuggets Mahoney
I used an EJ for about 4 months until the thread snapped where the head meets the handle it was this model, apologies for the image size. My understanding is that all budget to mid price DE razors are made from cast 'pot metal' and can do that if dropped or if there's an unlucky imperfection in the casting. Machined brass/ stainless steel models would be much more reliable but they're currently a niche within a niche and spendy.
Nuggets Mahoney
I didn't think the EJ represented particularly good value as the handle had a cheap plastic feel, the head was good while it lasted but I am pretty sure that it is manufactured by a different company as I have seen it on other handlesI think it's been mentioned up thread but EJ reportedly designed the head in collaboration with Muhle. Muhle made the heads for EJ initially but EJ allegedly moved production elsewhere.Happy with my Muhle (r89) for what I paid for it, all metal version, milled/ textured handle. Would snag a decent classic if and when the chance arose.

Two choices - Cached in a hermetically sealed container along with some silica gel - Store them under a plastic healing pyramid http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyramid_power Of the two I favour the latter
The Masked Tulip
According to the reviews on Amazon it seems that lots of men buy two or three razors - from Merku(?), Mulhe, EJ, etc - before deciding on a favourite. Weight and handle length seem to be a huge consideration. As for razor blades, I am surprised to learn that there is a considerable choice available nowadays with different makes of blades vbeing designed for different stubble, skin, closeness of shave, etc. There are a few specialist DE shaving shops online who will actually sell, for about a fiver, several brands of razor blades in a 'sample' packet so you can try different makes and decide which razor blade suits you. God seems to have given me girlie thin wrists with large long fingered hands - yes, stop and think how freakish that is (I look like I have ET's hands after a hot bath) - so many of the above branded razors appear to have handle lengths which are too short for me. Many are about 7 or 8 cm in length which I feel is too short. I think I mmissed a trick as, most likely, I should have thought about this a month ago and then picked up a razor in a sale. Several of the specialsit razor sites are sold out of the popular razors so I can only imagine that they had sales on recently.
oracle
i actually quite like the bic comfort disposables. quite a nice shave with them usually. whenever poundland have the box of 4 for £1 it's quite a bargain.(did do about 6 months ago so I got 4 packs, but recently they've been selling these shitty non-brand sorts that i tried once and nearly skinned myself alive.) no way am i paying nearly a tenner for a pack of gillette refills. The Masked Tulip
Happy with my Muhle (r89) for what I paid for it, all metal version, milled/ textured handle. How do you find the handle length on the Muhle r89? Is it long enough? I wondered whether it was too short and hence your fingers would be too close to the head and get in the way of seeing where you were shaving? The handle on the 1904 is so short it's borderline vestigial. I'm happy with either and tbh would find a little too short easier to shave with than a little too long - nippier, not so cumbersome.Short answer, once you get the hang of it, including the right grip, (http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Safety_Razor_Grips#How_do_I_hold_my_Safety_Razor) I reckon a 'standard' length handle will be fine for most folk. Nuggets Mahoney
Cheers. I've just added a link to a page on grips http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/Safety_Razor_Grips#How_do_I_hold_my_Safety_Razor I'm not sure how you currently hold a razor but the chances are it's different to DE style. The Masked Tulip
Very interesting - thanks. On one Amazon review a chap goes into great detail about buying some rubber tubing, what size to get and how to heat shrink it onto a DE razor handle to make it thicker. There appears to be an entire sub culture of men out there moving from the plastic razors back to double edge razors. You wouldn't know by looking at them - apart from all the bloodied tissue paper on their faces.
happy_renting
- Store them under a plastic healing pyramid I misread that as 'heating pyramid' if you want to use warm razor blades of the classical safety razor design, you can clench them between your buttocks for 5 minutes to warm them up. It's an old trick my mother taught me.
europbaron
I switched to DE shaving back in July after reading this thread. Having read about people cutting themselves, my first shave using the DE was a nerve racking affair. However, tempting fate, I'm happy to report not a single drop of blood has been shed, and I've only had one slight graze. Shaving is more pleasurable, just as close and I get far fewer trapped hairs. This is definitely due to the razor itself - I've been using a brush and soap instead of foam for years. One happy convert here.
