No you don't Kris, no you don't. Council (Assured Tenancy) and private renting (Assured Shorthold Tenancy) are two very different things. In my experience, not one british woman I know under 50 sees immigration as a problem. Loads of blokes do. My own theory is that as throughout history women were kidnapped by outsiders, and men killed, evolutionary pressures mean that women befriend/like more easily outsiders. Problem is that 'they' - the main 3 parties - love it when those of us who are politically aware/active go and vote for independents, minor parties, the greens, whoever because they know that they will always have a hardcore of voters in each seat who will vote their people in. So in safe Labour seats Labour will always win and ditto for the Tories. They are happy for the votes of people fed up with Tories, Labour, Liberals to be spread around several other minor parties because it means that their people always get back in. UKIP, whether you love them or hate them, have altered this if people vote for UKIP. There are many, many things I loathe about UKIP but if they can get the former Croydon MP who was parachuted into Swansea West out then, IMPO, that would not be a bad thing. At which point Labour and the Tories might finally show an interest in Swansea. Currently, neither do IMPO. Voting for the most socialist candidate might make you feel great when you put the X on the ballot paper but, in rerality, it will do sod all to change the politics in your constituency. I noticed this on FTAlphaville a few days ago too - almost complete unanimity that housing policy is screwed up and needs to be changed. That's why they track incomes quite tightly. 2) The total number of properties will be broadly the same, so where will all the ex-rentals end up? For sale perhaps? Nice theory, shame the evidence contradicts it. Germany has more pro-tenant tenancy laws than the UK and a higher proportion of properties supplied to the private rental market. It's true that's what the main parties have been relying on for the last 40 years, and the combined number of votes they attract has been falling steadily throughout that time. That tribal hardcore of people who would vote for a turd with a red/blue/yellow rosette pinned to it is shrinking all the time. If it was then people could build on their own land and the situation would be far better than it is currently. When you've got a state shaped hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
