Didn't have a pool though, so we didn't do too badly.

Not a lot in some places It's all a bit meaningless without knowledge of the exact location. I rent a two bed house in Oxford 'worth' almost £500k. You could buy a 3 bed house in a different part of town for £165k if you wanted to. However, you may not want to.

You can get a 3 bed semi for about £30k less than that, it depends on the exact street. Some of them are 'rat-run' short-cuts at rush hour, with chavs and their bean can exhausts at night, some are quiet cul-de-sacs, makes a big difference I reckon. CrashMuppet
£170k, might not buy much in some part of he country, but that's where the distortion of a national average price is misleading. In some areas that amount is going to be high compared to local wages. in others it is going to be much lower. Not to mention anything of desirability. And as for "Workshy Land" - comparing suburban residential prices in the UK with holiday/rural areas in France is hardly a like for like comparison. Especially if you pick sparsely populated areas which have poor links and next to no non-agri local employment. Prices are not that cheap in the more desirable areas of France. Try finding a detached 3 or 4 bed chalet in Haute-Savoie for under 500k for starters. Not going to happen. Even more expensive now that the hard working ethical financial management in the UK as caused our currency to become so worthless. So I wonder who's really laughing, the "workshy French" or the Debt ridden Englishers. PS: I wonder if that flat in Walthamstow comes with a free stab vest? You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet
Have to agree to CrashMuppet - whilst there is more affordable property - try living out in the rural parts and make yourself a good living. Most live on the breadline, and if you're not working 'on the black', then your wages will be drained by some of the highest social charges in the world. Don't forget taxe fonciere and taxe habitation, plus the prices of goods, which are more often than not more expensive than the UK (all bar wine). May seem like a bargain on the surface, but the dream is often cut short for many who didn't do their homework.
jammo
It does look a bit like the bulls were right. Houses aren't going to fall massively. Sadly, though, whilst the price of a house stagnates, the cost of a litre of fuel continues to rise by at least 1 pence per fortnight, sometimes 3. Food gets smaller, and heaven forbit you have a niccotine/ alcohol habit.. QE may have come to an end, but it's effect on the pound lives on! I wonder what the official inflation figures are at? It doesn't matter, it's a lie, we all know it's at above 10%, probably 15. Shame your wages are unlikely to match it.

Out of all the stories I hear of people moving abroad and then coming back to the u.k. or wishing to come back , FRANCE must top the list of the dream turing sour !! Being from the london area I rather assumed that these out of the way places were of a similar location to the back of beyonds that were linked to in the OP.... just pleasant with it.
