I expect that a lot of pressure has been put on them to make sure that withdrawals are orderly. Any hint that people are having trouble getting their money out would cause a repeat of the run on NR. Midshires (7 to 7.17%). This cash is now going to the 1-year bond with NRK (6.75%). Not worth the risk (and stress) for an extra half percent. Until that point the BoE is actually making money of the borrowers.Northern Rock and B&B both are profit making until they run out of money (bank runs). The BoE can take all the hits it wants until the Mortgages are sold on or kept till the customers move elsewhere. Is the statement quoted above madness??
