The government wants a 75% 'super tax' on those earning an annual salary of more than 1m euros (£850,000) . Under the proposal, companies, rather than individuals, would be liable to pay the 75% tax rate for the part of employees' annual salaries that exceed 1million euros. Paris St-Germain, who are backed by Qatar investors, will be the hardest hit by the tax. Monaco, who are funded by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, will be exempt as they do not fall under French tax laws. The concern among clubs is that the 'super tax' will deter footballers from playing for sides in France. The issue will be debated in parliament, and French president Francois Hollande will meet representatives of the French clubs next week to discuss the issue. Initial plans were for individuals earning more than 1million euros to pay the 75% rate, but the government changed the proposals after protests by top French executives and actors such as Gerard Depardieu. Ligue 1 clubs registered a loss of 108 million euros (£92m) at the end of the 2011-12 season with the accumulated loss over the last three seasons amounting to 303m euros (£259m). Louvel added: "There is already a deficit in our sector and now they impose a new tax. Football has a role in society and that will be affected as a consequence of these new measures. I stopped watching any football 4 years ago due to the sickening feeling I used to get when thinking about their wages. Now I have no interest in football and no idea was is going on in the football world. Although, every time I hear a conversation about football, it still seems to be the same old rubbish! A recent poll showed >80% of the French thought their footballers were overpaid and detached from normal society. Given their debts, you'd think the clubs would have reduced salaries themselves, so that few if any footballers were earning funny money? But no, Planet Football is an altogether different beast. Debts are written off. Banks take the hit. But then lend them more. Money sloshing around in a bed chamber pot is how my neighbour described it all. As for this "if we are taxed, we'll go elsewhere" nonsense. Similar theats by the bankers in 2005/6/7/8/9/11 - Some will go...the vast majority will stay as they won't be able to command the high salary elsewhere. And if they really do leave...what a bonus for the smaller ,well run clubs to challenge the big , debt ridden clubs. Might have an almost level playing field ? What's not to like ? Surely they will have no trouble attracting people from the French version of 'workfare' who are willing to play for their weekly benefit I am pretty sure even in the supposedly indigent UK there would be no trouble getting 22 dole bludgers to kick a ball about for 90 minutes at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge BTW in the UK everyone pays 20% VAT on most goods and services not just the rich but perhaps you had not noticed.
