What is Android like for getting blocked up with cr4p?

What I mean is, if you buy a Windows desktop or laptop and allow kids and teenagers to use it, in a few months it'll be so slow and full of accumulated cr4p, trojans and viruses that you'll need to re-install Windows and all the apps, spending most of a day doing it.

If I buy an Android tablet and just use it, will this happen, or is the O/S more resistant?

windows: scan with Malwarebytes...then a Norton or Comodo Registry cleaner..cleans up windows a treat....doesnt take a day unless the users really abused it.

They did, and do. Or at least, machines that last 8 years with me are finished in 4 months with them. Tried those kind of cleaners, they don't work.

My family cannot be trusted with Windows machines, Apple's stuff lasts a bit longer. And no, I don't know what they do because I don't stand around over their shoulders all the time, they should be used as test-O/S-to-destruction specialists.

Yep, and hence why somewhere around £100 is about right. These are consumer devices designed to last 18 to 24 months and then buy whatever the latest one is.

I think I will buy a Hudl in a few weeks. I was going to buy a Nexus 7 2 but having read about this crack appearing in the screen I think that there is a design flaw with the current lot.

Not massively convinced by the Hudl, due to them being made by Archos (so I'm lead to believe)...

I give family their own separate non-admin windows logon accounts which seems to circumvent much of that

As to android, cheap ones seem to get bogged down with time whereas major manufacturer ones seem less problematic, hence my cynicism about the hudl being manufactured by archos

I have an acer iconia b1 which is pretty good and cheap, ie reliable and doesn't slow down following software installs and uninstalls.

Downsides are a screen with awful viewing angles and not very bright, not great sound, and low memory and storage so can't fit very many apps on it and sometimes crashes out of Firefox with out of memory error (handled though as Firefox closes but android stays functional)

It's cheap though, Reliable, Works consistently and the latest version had increased memory and storage so probably addresses some of the above concerns.

Had a touch screen anomaly after few months and their warranty department repaired it by return of post, no major hassle.

I previously had a none major brand cheap Chinese android tablet and in short after a few months it didn't work, well I mean it switched on but apart from that it had slowed down to the point that it was useless.

Nokia just announced their new Windows 8 tablet - selling for 499 bucks so that will be 499 quid in the UK.

Can we guess how well that will sell? Hint - it is in the same price ball park as a large ipad.

Oh, and they have a new smartphone costing $749.

Clearly this company is in serious denial IMPO.

Next up, Apple about to launch their new ipads.

Are Nokia wholey owned by Microsoft, or do they just own their mobile division?

They bought the smartphone part but it is unclear about the tablet whether it is owned by Nokia or whether it is owned by the bit of Nokia bought by MS.

If it was owned by MS, wouldn't it be a direct competitor to the Surface? admittedly a couple of hundred quid cheap mind...

I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and I'm very impressed. Absolutely no problems with the construction or hardiness of the tablet observed so far. It's extremely solidly made - anyone who has tried it comments that it 'doesn't feel cheap'.

I had bought it to tinker around with as I was able to put old and otherwise set to expire Tesco vouchers towards £100 of the price, meaning it cost me very little indeed. It has steadily become my main tablet despite the fact that I already owned an expensive brand-name model. I really like it because it was so cheap .. thus I can carry it with me day to day without worrying about losing/breaking it, meaning it's usually to hand which lends itself to being used a lot.

It also offers easy memory expansion via MicroSD (I have a 32gig card in there) and can be plugged into a telly for playing back video or games, features which Google are trying to push people away from having an interest in selling them 'cloud based' services. It just makes a very nice consumer device.

Tesco have come up with a genuinely good product here, at a great price which is even better if you have unused vouchers.

I have owned an 32GB Archos 5 device for years and it is actually a pretty robust bit of kit (I know because it is has been dropped many times from various heights onto a range of surfaces). It is also a decent enough media player when you get all the Codecs etc. In the past the main problem has been that Archos implementations of Android has been poor in the past which means you have had to b*gger about with their stuff to get the best out of it. One assumes that if they are supplying Tescos with the HUDL then the retailer has forced them to get their act together on this point. I would expect the actual hardware build to be quite solid

My 80 year mum now has a hudl , and has become a video conferencing fiend with us " kids"...... Absolute bargain.

My one year old nexus 7 has turned out to be very robust.I've even dropped it down the stairs...!! But I do have a good leather case.

I've done one factory restore to take it back to the original settings to clear out 10 months of crud buildup .....as I had a download frenzy of free apps some of which I only used once , Much more selective now.

With 50gbs of freecloud and my google accounts rebooting it was dead easy.

Easily the best bit of kit that I've bought in relation to what it does , its use and value.

Heh .... As an aside , my reduction in electrical consumption with my big desk top not being used as much , means that I will recoup its initial cost in just under 30 months from purchase .

The Argos one is not worth the price , very poor res if you've used a nexus or hudl.

The Guardian tablet review said the Argos tablet was dire

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/shortcuts/2013/oct/20/which-tablet-computer-right-for-you

However, the most interesting thing about the article is that it did not mention the Windows RT tablet at all. Presumably they had (rightly) assumed that virtually no one was going to be buying one of them for Christmas and that the Windows Surface PRO running full Windows 8 is really an expensive laptop with a touch screen not a tablet at all.

iPad Mini without the high res screen is a bit cheaper now. £249. Can you stretch to a real tablet?

I've seen 2nd hand 10.1" Galaxy Notes floating around ebaygum for around £200...could be tempted if I can find in reasonable nick.. I've heard that the Xperia Z tablet is pretty good, but my budget doesn't stretch to £400.

Delivered today was a Gemini Devices Joy TAB 9.7 which I got for my boy for Christmas @£129.99 It's cheap and had some decent online reviews. I can't really comment on how well it works as yet as I only tested for 30 mins or so this afternoon, but my initial impression was quite positive.

I've got a brand new Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0 7" 8GB wifi only if anyone is interested. It's sitting unopened in it's box here. PM me if you are interested anyone. Can't find a use for a tablet until android manage to reduce audio latency (No - I don't own any apple products - too expensive - and I have an android phone)

Lenovo a2109 9 inch quad core, comes with android 4.0 but painlessly upgrades to authorised lenovo upgrade to android 4.1 on connection to a Wi-Fi signal.

It also takes a sim card so gift gaff heaven.

This bargain seems to be under the radar in the slipstream of the hudl, but my guess it's a huge leap in capability for little more money

On sale for £150 at a big discount at Tesco direct and few other web stores

(Just bought one and lives up to my hype so far)
