Butthead
Fascinating quote from the BBC Correspondent: Giving people something for nothing is rarely unpopular, even when they are paying for it through their taxes.” Spot the obvious contradiction. Spot the obvious step further down the road to serfdom.
durhamborn
What they don't tell you is that now free school meals go to anyone on less than £16k,,once Universal Credit comes in they have no way of working out who will get free school meals so they are going to base it on the disregard level for a family,,approx. £7k a year. That will remove free school meals from hundreds of thousands. This new policy is simply so that they can defect the bad press when people start to see the new rules. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/cruel-dinners-hundreds-thousands-children-1941142
LiveinHope
Apparently, according to Cleggy, it will save parents £400.00 a year 39 weeks in the school year So it works out at £2.00 per infant per day Don't seem to be many economies of scale ! Venger
From a Conservative Treasury in the early-to-mid 1970s that forced the cut in free milk to 7-11 year olds, to ConDems revised interpretation of capitalism being one of 'free lunch' give-aways on the taxpayer, and 'help-to-big-debt' for younger people to afford houses. TheCountOfNowhere
im so glad the austerity and cut backs are in full swing. they tax the workers into the ground and give it to other people so they can eat better than the people they take it from. GloomMonger
We've got a succession of these to look forward to before the GE. The bbc had a banker on this morning explaining that the timing of the sale of Lloyds was partly share price and partly because it's conference season and Osborne can stick it to Balls. Got to love our politicians!
MartinE
Meals round here are £1.90 a child. Menu Spaghetti Bolognese Savoury Rice (V) Baked Potato + cold filling Salad Not cooked on site - shipped in on warm trays from the reheat centre. Have to choose what you want in advance so it can be shipped in. Menu fixed for the term. I think they represent poor value.

Have to choose what you want in advance so it can be shipped in. Menu fixed for the term. I think they represent poor value. This is the problem. I don't have much time for Jamie Oliver but his campaign on school meals showed they were spending 39p a portion and it was rubbish. So the government will tax us all probably to the tune of £2.00+ per day but spend pennies on food. Call me a cynic.
LiveinHope
Bargain. Each child could get two of these for breakfast: 99p a pop. Should be able to have at least 6 each with central purchasing, which is why I was surprised at £2.00 per INFANT per day. Even parents should be able to do it cheaper than £2.00 Still what's a few 100 million between friends, when votes are needed. or people could take responsibility for themselves and the cost of housing could be cheaper

erat_forte
So who gets the £2 per child per day? Who is profiting from this? Also it nicely gets the children in the habit of eating the school meals so they are less likely to switch to packed lunches once the free offer ends - yet more profits for who? zugzwang
Why not let the kiddies eat crisps every day? Or jam sandwiches? It's not as if they've got anything to live for.
the gardener
I think it's a good idea. Schools need to get cooks and kitchens back on site though and run things themselves. Profits shouldn't be skimmed off by private companies.

Should the state pay for Sports kit - a 'run around' and team games are also important for health. I'd have thought paying for food was the responsibility of the parents - hardship notwithstanding Nothing wrong with having a school canteen selling food. longtomsilver
My daughter had a free school meal voucher from the day she started up until the 20th September. Only meal worth taking is the one tomorrow and that's pasta (£0.20p) otherwise it'll be homemade sandwiches as usual. If I feel particularly lazy every so often I'll send her with a £3 taste the difference meal deal keeping the bottle of coke for myself. £2 a day is an absolute disgrace for the gruel they serve up. Surely you're describing the situation as it is now. People who work and pay taxes pay for the meals of children whose parents are on benefits while their own kids have to pay for their meals. If meals are to be given free then it's fairer if everyone gets them. . Where's that £40.00 per month 'saved' going to go? It's going to go on rent, wonga or tesco.... It's all going to go to big business. They have sucked us so dry we can't afford to feed our children! It's nothing but a subsidy to big business, like all benefits. If people could only spend their own money then half of these big firms would go bust. Better ones would/could thrive, and the world would be a better place. You don't want your child to take sweets from strangers, but you happily accept lunch from some of the most corrupt/dangerous people on the whole planet. Send your kids of to WWIII - you can't object... the government have paid for them.... Baaa Baaaa!
