The Matlock Spur, which joins the Limestone Way at Bonsall, has had 12 stiles replaced with self-closing gates, Derbyshire County Council said. County councillor Chris Jackson encouraged walkers to use the footpath with its "stunning views of the countryside from Masson Hill". Lots of atmosphere on Sundays in summer when all the bikers meet up and the views seen from the top of 'Lovers Leap' cliff which overlooks Matlock Bath are fantastic. Kirklees has been doing up a local park (run into the ground by then) but the bulk of funds has come from Lotto. But watching these renovations over the summer, you can see all that is wrong with councils running anything. Supposed to completed by Autumn 2010, they are needless to say still spinning it out. 'Derbyshire pathway boost': http://www.derbyshir...thway_boost.asp Work costing £947 has been carried out on the 2.5 mile Matlock Spur which goes from Snitterton Road near the town's train station to join up with the Limestone Way at Bonsall.Twelve old stiles have been replaced with new self-closing gates and 11 posts have been put in with new marker discs to make the route easier to follow. Well it wouldn't have surprised me, time after time you see 100K/200K/300K of S106 money available from new developments, and the lot is spent on 10 meters of cycle path. Its all funny money when councils are concerned. If you start with someone else's money, you throw it in the pot, produce false charges to account for it, then use the excess to pay for your team of diversity officers. If councils take their eyes off the rights-of-way ball, that will be the green light for farmers to obstruct, by neglect, our legal access to the countryside. I'm a keen walker, and while some farmers maintain their rights of way properly, others appear to go out of their way to make access difficult. Rights of way are just what they say, rights of way, not a favour granted to the plebs by farmers. Another fine example of council freemasons paying private sector freemasons a lot of money for doing very little work. We've had the MP allowance scandal, how about unearthing another sort of scandal. We had a school crossing put in up the road, you know the usual white lines painted on the road, a couple of poles put in etc all at a cost for £150,000. This was all done prior to when the school was announced to close. Some council contractors are making an absolute fortune, with our taxes. I feel a freedom of information request coming on.
