TheCountOfNowhere
Civil servant on 30K say. Probably losses a third of that to tax and NI, say. So they pay the government 10K. Maybe another 2K for pension contributions, making about 12K. So they take home 18K. But wait...that's 6 K more than they have paid into the pot, they arent even covering their own costs. In reality the blighters dont actually pay tax or pension contributions but seem to do very well of the rest of our backs !!! How long can the people with real jobs support the 50% without ? Executive Sadman
Not sure how long, but Mr. Denninger thinks less than 10 years in the case of the US. Probably not as long here.
hilltop
This does not really deserve a reply because you are missing a major part of the process - Civil Servants contribute to our national capital and wealth. Without the sterling work done by oor Public Servants the glue would be removed from our society and economy. You really do not want the reality of anarchy, the private sector would replace the public sector at the point of a gun. It is fanciful to believe that there is an alternative. The Civil Service do a good job and deserve a good wage.

Unless you're going to require people to pay to be civil servants, that must always be the case, mustn't it ?

non frog
... the sooner it is run with the efficiency of a business the better for all. Ah yes. Private sector companies like RBS or Lloyds - they would show us the way wouldn't they? No waste there -just private sector skills and performance that make Britain great. PMSL. Executive Sadman
There is more waste in my experience in the private sector. Sure, but its waste that people generally willingly pay for. Id rather not pay for celebrity TV advertisements, but if their cheaper than the competition, will do anyway. I cant much choose not to pay council tax, income tax and do on, or at least choose a private sector supplier. Tax is theft and all that. Actually i dont mind tax, its all the voodoo deficit spending that the BBC invariably ignore and call growth that drives me to the point of insanity. Coolfonz
but i thought the private sector was superior. either it is - and what it is doing now is right ipso facto - or it cant compete. macca
Well if they don't pay tax then good luck to them because paying tax is for suckers and doesn't achieve anything in the UK apart from bailing out private industry.

You really do not want the reality of anarchy, the private sector would replace the public sector at the point of a gun. It is fanciful to believe that there is an alternative. The Civil Service do a good job and deserve a good wage. Is this sarcasm :blink? Probably and unfortunately not. While there are anarchists here who would fully disagree with you, the choice is not limited between anarchy and totalitarian (or socialist) state. There is also a possibility of drastically limiting the area of the state interference and reducing it to the maintenance of courts, law and public security in the direct sense of this word to defend the functioning of free markets. Economy should be no business of state as it only misallocates and wastes economic resources. The comments of another poster claiming his instrumental role in international trade as a government servant beggar belief: that role has been purely created out of thin air as a consequence of state intervention with international trade: not only does this intervention cripple economies worldwide, it also requires productive private sector to pay salaries to these servants that do a non-job in the best case scenario. Economy and monetary system as well as welfare system are some of the major areas where there should be no state intervention as the private sector can always do better (cheaper). TheCountOfNowhere
Are there any civil servants here today ? I'm not saying we dont need them. Clearly we do, well some anyway. But 50% of the work force is having a laugh. That means 50% of the working population pay no tax or pension contributions but still take take take. I think 10-15% would be a healthier number. The other 35% should have to work for their money like the rest of us. I dont really want to hear some tax funded egyt telling me how hard they work etc etc, i'm up at 5 a.m. every day, travel 60 miles to work, work 12 hours flat out, travel 60 miles back home and I still have to do my accounts etc at the weekend. I pay a s**t load of tax, get no pension and I personally feel like im funding a bunch of lazy money grabbing leeches. *** rant over....no wait a minute...dont even start me on the dole spongers...and relax...rant over **** Edited September 16, 2009 by TheCountOfNowhere

Waiting for paperwork from government if civil servants are sacked? I don't have a gun, but I'm sure I can get one. Would be a good investment of my hard earned. There's a simple solution to this. Pay public sector workers 45K, but make the total deductions 25K. Then they take home 20K (a net 2K pay rise), and it's 5K less than they pay into the system, covering their costs with a surplus. Bingo - everyone's happy and the public sector becomes profitable
