DoctorJ
HPC favourite Micheal Portillo was on FiveLive this morning and predicted that we are going to go back to a barter economy. People who have skills that they can trade for other goods and services will do well. So you are sorted if you're into sewing, various types of handywork, plumbing etc... Is it going to get that bad? I heard him say that but he 'avoided' the follow up question when asked to elaborate in the best tradition of slippery politico's. The sheeple are not yet ready for this sort of news/views so even if he believes it he has to tread carefully. He will not want to get a 'TFH' label just yet as this will undoubtedly damage his political ambition. Mind you the first one to call it in terms of 'this is really how bad it is going to get' will be ahead of the curve and could do well once the 'awakening' takes place. Yeah noticed the fact that he dodged the follow up question. Although hes just come out with a corker about show trials for senior bank execs. Finished up saying that the housing market is dead and no-one will buy until the market has hit rock bottom. The Govt. should let it hit rock bottom. plb
Sounds like Five Live are doing a "Recession Special" for the phone in at 09:00 (I think), and how Britain can be saved from it (!). Three guests are going into the "Recession Room" to come up with some ideas to help us out of recession. Guests are: Portillo, Andy Zaltman (sic) and Deborah Orr. Sounds like Andy will be taking the pi$$ a bit (he's a comedian), but overall they all sound pretty bearish. Haven't worked out if Victoria Derbyshire will be hotsing the phone in or Nicky Campbell (or both). I'll be at work so won't be able to listen in. Guest sillybear2
5Live seems to hit a certain demographic, a station staffed full of Labour supporters with a chip on their shoulder, and a quite a thick demographic listerner base, BTL cabbies etc. There is no hope for them. Privateer
Well I've only got 10 maris pipers to match your bet. Fair? Ten pipers is only two meals' worth! Five turnips are worth much more. Provided they aren't the big ones you use to feed sheep. They aren't very nice.

He will not want to get a 'TFH' label just yet as this will undoubtedly damage his political ambition. The man has given up his political ambitions. The greatest failure of the Tory opposition over the 10 years was to reject the one man that could have recovered their fortunes. This is not just my view, I know several Tory MP's, all of whom were at the time of the Barton Street campaign were strong Portillo supporters. After the party rejected him they all had Labour MP's coming up to them saying that rejecting the man was maddness. It was.
Gone baby gone
The good old barter system.Govt tax take = fook all. Oh how naïve! They'd just turn up and take 20% of whatever you have about. Bit like bailiffs.

Yup, the spirit of Dr Pangloss fills the station, reality has only just hit them, they keep talking about "being in touch" so obviously their listener base is now suffering and the time for denial is now over, obviously the Beeb is basically public sector and don't really have a clue about job losses. They were a HPI happy clappy station, Halifax and Nationwide figures were greeted with glee during the boom, now these figures are treated like an old aunt that has gone dotty. Without the inflationary ability and PAYE the government as we know it is over. 5% of its current size at most. We'll be like china - send the taxmen out to the more rural discticts and they are never seen again.
General Melchett
I'd better start laying in the homebrew kit, a hand-cranked centrifuge and some filtration/distillation kit then* *Antibiotics, for the making of. Also possible sideline in the good, old fashioned Special Recipe if no one is interested in that.
