Following a demonstration of approximately 200 people against the cutbacks, 100 attempted to enter the "open" council meeting. They were refused entry, being told there was insufficient room in the chamber. Those shut out, including staff, children and disabled activists began to chant to be given admittance and at one point broke through the security cordon to gain entrance to the meeting. Some squared up to the councillors and the Mayor's mace was knocked to the ground as the meeting was suspended.

tahoma
The mayor's mace was knocked to the ground? I'm sorry, but that is just sacriledge. Whoever was responsible should be sent to the tower. I am going to have an overnight vigil in front of my RedKen shrine to get over this one.

peemac
The hungry sheep look up, and are not fed,But swoll'n with wind, and the rank mist they draw, Rot inwardly, and foul contagion spread. John Milton (1608 - 1674) I like Milton, prefer Shelley though, very relevant today. As I lay asleep in Italy,There came a voice from over the Sea, And with great power it forth led me To walk in the visions of Poesy. I met Murder on the way - He had a mask like Castlereagh - Very smooth he looked, yet grim; Seven blood-hounds followed him; All were fat; and well they might Be in admirable plight, For one by one, and two by two, He tossed them human hearts to chew Which from his wide cloak he drew. Next came Fraud, and he had on, Like Eldon, an ermined gown; His big tears, for he wept well, Turned to millstones as they fell. And the little children, who Round his feet played to and fro, Thinking every tear a gem, Had their brains knocked out by them. Clothed with the Bible, as with light, And the shadows of the night, Like Sidmouth, next, Hypocrisy On a crocodile rode by. And many more Destructions played In this ghastly masquerade, All disguised, even to the eyes, Like Bishops, lawyers, peers, and spies. Last came Anarchy: he rode On a white horse, splashed with blood; He was pale even to the lips, Like Death in the Apocalypse. And he wore a kingly crown: And in his grasp a sceptre shone; On his brow this mark I saw - 'I AM GOD, AND KING, AND LAW!' Call to freedom is even more powerful, it makes my chest swell when ever I read it: Let a vast assembly be,And with great solemnity Declare with measured words that ye Are, as God has made ye, free - And these words shall then become Like Oppression's thunder doom Ringing through each heart and brain, Heard again - again - again Rise like Lions after slumber In unvanquishable number - Shake your chains to earth like dew Which in sleep had fallen on you - Ye are many - they are few. Make no wonder they don't teach this stuff in schools. Edited March 1, 2007 by peemac
MRMX9
If you sacked half the staff at Camden Town Hall no one would notice - it is the most inefficient overstaffed council in London. I have a friend who works at Westminster City Council (where the council tax six hundred quid lower) - apparently they have 7 people doing his job next door in Camden! PricedOutNative
We will see similar things happen with workers in other public sector jobs over the next decade as it’s slowly made clear that the economy can’t sustain their employment and associated massive pension costs. Must look for another country
subsidiser
What annoys me about The Left is that Camden is portrayed as a down-trodden inner-city enclave in need of ever increasing taxation to support it and its worthy public sector who do nothing but good works. In reality its one of the richest areas in the whole of the UK. With bloated overpaid functionaries who have all sorts of imaginary socio-jobs. MRMX9
Yes - but Camden is in London so all the wealth (and business rates) are stolen by Gordon Brown to support his socialist fiefdoms in Scotland, Wales and the North! The richer an area becomes the less govt grant it gets!

Justice
if you want action then the only thing that these MP's take any note of is direct action and thats why they pass laws to say if more than 2 people are standing still in the street that they can be arrested and no one can get near 10 downing street anymore. it quite something when MP's need to hide away and say they are scared of a terrorist attack just so they don't need to answer joe public. maybe we should stop paying taxes because we are scared about terrorists blowing our homes up and therefore need to start saving for a new one now. As a Camden council tax payer bled dry to pay for gold plated pensions, social-engineering non-jobs, massive absenteeism and local council propaganda papers printed in Somali and Urdu (English version a few pages in), I think a few more job cuts would be in order. ChinaReader
I really am thinking long and hard about the type of people using this site Nutters all. Welcome to the asylum. But at least it's our asylum. Justice: I do wonder where they'd put all the people they tried to arrest if a hundred thousand actually got angry enough to march on Downing Street if they enforced the "no more than two rule" (a particularly ironic rule since suicide bombers rarely more about in groups of more than one!!! ). Aren't our jails supposed to be full? Do we really have that many holding cells in police stations in the capital? Scooter: "I think a few more job cuts would be in order. I seem to recall a paperback in the seventies that supposedly lifted the lid on government plans to maintain 'order' after a nuclear attack. I think the idea was that barbed-wire enclosed camps would be hastily erected in London's parks, where prisoners would be held at gunpoint by soldiers until they were processed elsewhere. Similar things happened to German civilians in the first and second world wars, though on a more permanent footing.
right_freds_dead
funny how nimbys get quickly organised to create a fuss/demo over very little. i think there was a similar thing with the pensioners vs poll tax increases last week. of course i didnt really care about pensioners anymore. esp when the cheif bleater lived in a decent sized house in 'devon' with the end shot being him and elderly wife tending their rather large garden - looking all sorrowful. id suggest he downgrades to a leeds over 55s complex, banks the rest and sells the 4 bed devon house to a working family that really needed it. do these asset rich pensioners think anyone really cares ?? Scooter
I just had visions of a purple alien wielding petrol bombs and storming the council meeting screaming "Save the play centre". Hence the scared smiley. I wouldn't dream of interfering with your right to protest... I just wouldn't try it where I live. My purple skin is a little paler in the flesh after the winter. Actually I am likely to be protesting against the playgroup protesters as well. My anger/annoyance with Camden stems from my ever increasing tax bill and my non-consumption of virtually every service they provide beyond walking on the pavements and a bit of rubbish collection. I have had "hard working families" and "won't someone think of the children" and enforced settlement of Somalis on benefit (yes they really are by and large) up to my ears. I agree where you live you may get shot or crushed by a tank. I am more likely just to get locked up for vocally not buying into the Socialist Paradise (even with a few Lib Dems in power) that is LBC. S.
