Many years ago I had a tour of a sewage plant and there were loads of them, semi inflated with gas, bobbing around the settling pond like some fetid phallic soup. Some things you just can't forget.

Winner of the comment competition down the page.....

The water firms are keen to get the problems into the spotlight and if it is blocking sewers then why not. We all pay extra on our bills for it.

I have always used comfybum so makes no odds to me if they were to ban the sale of wet wipes. A lot of the fat problems particulary in towns can be traced to the local kebab shops. Fine them enormously and the problem will stop.

I notice now that some firms are offering money for used cooking oil to turn ii into bio diesel....  That should also be explored further.....

I used the 'Government Property' stamped stuff as writing paper back in my Navy days. That's all it was fit for.

We should revert to that. Could make a dent in the deficit if people brought their own in rather than taking the stuff home.

I'm from that era.  When I was a civil servant ('95-'00 ish) pretty much everyone (well those on lower grades) stole the toilet paper.  I knew people who had the big roll dispensers in their toilets at home...

I still love the story about the civil servant guy that actually counted the number of sheets on a roll (must have had a serious case of something to be in there that long) and discovered that whilst they had been paying for 200 sheet rolls, they were only getting 175 sheet rolls (or something like that). Got a refund from the supplier going back years in the region of £50k.

One of my dads RN stories was about a sailor stuck in some godawful posting and his multiple transfer requests were denied.

Guy wrote to the top brass using the regulation toilet paper, finished with 'In view of your rank, I am writing this on the shiny side of the paper.'

We had to do that at work (NHS) in the 1980s. We came to the conclusion that we should allow three sheets per visit: one up, one down, one to polish!!!

I've been fighting cheap rolls of toilet paper at work for years. You just use six times as much if your fingers go through it too easily.

Way too much detail.

I was at a very posh New Year Eve do in Cuba many years ago - posh enough that Castro met our flight at the airport. When you went to the loo, there was a lady outside who sold you the toilet paper - it was priced by the sheet. Who on earth knows how many they are going to need in advance? I had four sheets left over. They weren't on sale or return :(

I remember they did that in Portugal when I was there years ago. But it was difficult to ask for more when you were in the loo!  I just carried a wodge of tissues everywhere, just :oin case. But then there was also the worry that the loo wouldn't flush them away, which may be why the lady was so stingy. Apparently, there was another lady in the gents loo doling out their paper!

Mind you're mighty fussy about your bog-roll you lot.

Can't be bothered with all that Andrex palaver me like - instead, I gently rinse all the "winnets" away from my rusty bullet-hole in the nearest available sink...!

You mean like the cludgie in the pub in the Haymarket in Newcastle that had a hole in the wall instead of a loo roll dispenser?  Customers would wipe with their hand and put the hand into the hole to wash. A hammer crushes the hand. Customer immediately sucks sore hand...:o
