After 4 years of staring at a screen I can't handle it anymore and am moving back into IT training with some foreign travel to get me out and about. I've found programmers to be a strange breed. Bit of a generalisation but I've worked opposite people who pick their nose, others who burp and belch, others who have absolutely no patience whatsoever. They also seem very keen to get the sucessful applicant to college doing an HNC which I am very keen on doing. The money aint too good but there may be a good chance of career progression in the future. Will keep u all updated as to my progress. ( if you're interested ) Right its official my Recession is cancelled. (For now anyway) Have been offered the above job, and start at the end of the month, so can start saving again now. Whooopee !!! On the car front find a friendly mechanic mate who regulalrly goes to auctions and tag along if you can, get a deposit (10/20% in cash to take along with you) and tell him your budget and see what comes up. Cars last for ever now and don't rust. These are status symbols when new.. but only german ones hold any value as the years tic on.... Citerons, peugeots.. Alfa Romeo 155.. I have one.. Bit of fun.. and yours for less the £1000 as no one else wants one.. Mine has cost me servicing and tyres in three years and cost me £800.. Generally speaking, there is a ceiling around £35k for techie jobs, even in London. Sure you may be able to break this with the right skills, but it is rare, and for every well paid worker there are two or three who are greatly underpaid. EDS = s***bags! Saw a beautiful maintained modern Roller last week for 8k, in such good condition I thought it was a wind up. Something like that would really boost someones confidence. Suggest you get a job in Public Service next time, I hear the pay is fantastic As for a car try a Ka. £1500 gets you a 8 year old one but £2500 gets you a three year old one. All Reading this topic gets me thinking. I live near Telford well about 22 miles North from where a lot of people are employed by EDS / CG Fujitsu. These folks are shipping in IT workers and paying the 15-20k as IT specialists and people talk about earning £250k pa ?? What have you been smoking ? (I am 35 now) I want to share something with you that will change your life Read this book, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki (a few quid from Amazon) It is about what the rich teach their kids about money--that the poor and middle class do not! Since reading the book I got out of wage slavery and now work for myself and I am financially independent after 2 years of self-employment. Just read the book and it will make you see your life very differently! Good luck Will have to put my savings / House buying plans on hold now. Have just been told today that i'm out of a job, due to my company losing a service contract, I was last in so I'm first out, and all I got was my bus fare home.....Seriously !! I was a Service engineer, on catering equipment, mechanical and a bit of electrical work, out on the road most of the time which I liked. Just considering re training, and what are people's opinion on the IT industry at present ? I quite fancy training as a network engineer, but not office based, I like to get out and about. To anybody in the know:- 1/ Is there still a decent living to be earned in the IT industry, or has every Tom, Dick, and Harry getting into it brought the wages down ? 2/ Is there much work about at the moment ? 3/ What is a good qualification to get / have as a starting point ? I want to get back into work ASAP instead of claiming dole and slowly sinking into desperation and depression, I've seen it happen to freinds and its not nice.
