Going abroad is not as great as its cracked up to be.

You have to accept you dont speak the langauge and you will piss people off when you cant. Then you'll realise that its a charitable act for the locals to tolerate your ignorance and then you'll realise what piss takers the immigrants in england are.

Secondly, the culture is very different, and that could create barriers.

Personally i would not recommned going to a country full of different coloured people, as you'll stand out and look odd, and no matter how friendly people are you'll always be that 'white' dude. Its a small detail but going to Somalia and lashing out at their political incorrectness might only result in you getting beheaded.

Also, local custom. Being gay, havin sex with a married man and drinking alcohol can all result in severe prison sentences and even hanging. Be careful were you go.

In fact, be safe, stay at home and shop at Woolworths

Personally i think the government want you to leave the country. There was always alot of pressure for me to leave when i was young. Basically it means this country does not have to employ you and overseas you will accept worse conditions because your perspective will be different. You are handicapping yourself with cultural and langauge barriers, you become cheap labour, so England gets cheap Polish labour and Poland gets cheap English labour and the managing employer classes in both countries are very happy. Its a trap. But there are advantages. experience nice polish sasauges, for example. lol, visit austwitz

Not so sure about any of that.

I don't know anyone who has yet regretted moving abroad. It wakes you up to how bad the UK has become.

150% happier is what it's all about. An old general foreman used to say to me, "You'll be the richest bloke in the graveyard."

It takes money and effort to set the thing up, but oh boy, once it's done you can live a nice simple life, free of the madness.

Good luck Andy.

The old general foreman had wisdom !

Thank you. And I wish you happiness too.

I'm going for interviews in Canada this summer to seek out a better life for my future sprogs. I'll be flying as it's too far to swim. I quite enjoy parts of the UK (on a sunny day) but the social, economic and political issues this country faces are much bigger than in a lot of other countries.

The thing is, I have made myself a good life with the opportunities the UK offers. It's just that I can make a better life in Canada for my family. I'll be taking all of my assets and productivity with me. Not to worry though. As I leave some degenerate bum will be swimming the channel to deposit his last digested meal on your shores. Happy days!

Good luck, I did the same forty years ago and for many of the same reasons (the more things change the more things remain the same). I don't regret it. There is space (keep out of the big cities) and freedom to do stuff like renovate your house without idiot government types crawling all over you to justify their salary. Mind you, Canada is not as free as it used to be and is headed down the same socialist road that appears to be a requirement of western civilisation. Canada's major attraction is that the people are very easy to get along with and they don't give a hoot where you come from (memories of Pommie b@st@rd in Australia). When I got here all those years ago a local businessman told me, when I asked his opinion about starting a business, that it didn't matter what I did just so long as I worked hard at it. I think that advise is still true. The wide open spaces are nice. There is always somewhere to park. The winter is a killer and the bugs are bad for the first three years but the really important factor is those around you and Canadians are nothing if not polite and decent. If you work hard you can make it and there is still all that space.

Issues you should be aware of: if your are bringing ingenuity fine but your uk qualifications won't count. Trades are very protectionist. The old boy network is alive and well. Immigration is not as easy as you will be lead to believe. Education here is probably not as good as in UK. You will miss the history. Get your teeth fixed before you leave. You will discover Robertson screws and never look back and videos in the library are free.

What's the weather like Ontario like in June? Is it worth a visit?

It's a bit cool right now, we planted the tomatoes out anyway and have our fingers crossed. Ontario is a big place. There's lots of snow up north. If you go far enough it is snow all year!

June is a bad season for bugs (mosquitoes mostly). Around here in the country a clap test is running about five but north of the Soo it is about fifteen. A clap test: clap your hands and count the kill.

 Is Toronto full of bugs this time of year too, or is it just in the countryside?

moving abroad can really suck

every day your abroad is a day further away from your kingdom in england, your job, friends and all that.

Having lived overseas i can vouch for the fact that there is value in the sbstance of your roots, local knowledge, history, familiarity, and you miss it. The grass is not always greener.

All im saying is that it should not be a decision taken lightly or because its cool.

I used to put stuff on my CV to cover the time i was awa but it was always a headache at the dole office or job interviews, it didn't cut any ice. it basically meant, was not owned by British Tyranical Employer, which meant i was a risk. They like teir slaves passive and unadvenerous.

im all in favour of leaving the UK, just that you shouldn't ramp it. Going abroad is always sold as a cool thing to do, never as a significant career move. You do get it, but not many people move abroad because of the increased opportunity in electronic engineering, they move abroad unskilled and do menial office work, bar work, tourism and such. Other then a varied life experience, it doesn't amount to much. I spent time inTurkey with TEFL people and i was left with the notion that they were all twats. It was just like England but they were all riding high on the being in Turkey thing without actually doing anything. They might as well have been in England, they can get drunk in England just the same. The only difference was they could all come back with great stories about how it was in Turkey. wow. One upman ship at its best.

The only reason I would go overseas for a long time is if i had a quality job or project such as project management on new Rolls Royce propulsion development in Dussledorf or Systems control engineering project lead for Beoing at Long Beach. I would never go to Dusseldorf or Long Beach to work at a bar. You are who you are whereever you are. If your a retard in england you'll be a retard in any city in the world. But people dont see that, they think it will better them just to get away. I stopped travelling when I realised whilst stodd at a bus terminal in Ulaan Baator that travel was nothing more than one long chain of queing up for one bus/train or plane after another, with intevals of walking around looking at crap.

I hope to write this so that it is not percieved as a bitch and a moan. It is a look at my situation, what I am witnessing on the groung, and what I consider will become a serious problem in the future:

It looks like my boyfriend’s job is no longer secure. At first we fretted about what to do, but now we realise we don't care.

We're off! We've saved up money - which we were going to buy a house with (about 30k) but we've decided we've had enough of waiting for someone, anyone, to take an interest in us and taking the money with us.

Where is this magical country where the under-30 age-group is treated so well, given plenty of opportunities and can afford to buy a house, marry and have children just one year after university? Poland?? So why are all their young people coming to the UK and why is their birth rate so low?

Sorry, but far away hills are green and all that. It's great you have a flat to live in and Krakow is a great city but I don't see how it says much about the plight of the under 30 age group. I've lived in a number of countries in the EU and the aging population problem is not confined to the UK. It's actually worse in France and Germany. I know Poles (at least 3 of my acquaintance and others from the new EU states too) who live in the UK and love it because they've had a chance to build a career here that they could never have dreamed of in Poland.

Also, you're only 1 year out of uni, have never had a proper job (by your own admission) and yet have managed to save 30k??? Do you realise how long most people have to work to even dream of saving that much money in their lifetime? It doesn't sound like you really had it all that bad here and if you think the UK is bad, wait till you see the average Polish wage.

Go for it I say. I moved to Norway in January and at first I missed home a lot. When the spring came, the place changed and I saw things in a different light. I was lucky in that I got a job before I came out here. There are still things I miss but I wouldn't go back to where I was now, looking back it was like leaving behind a nightmare. The biggest factor in my move was the state of politics, police state and the ever encroaching menace of the EU as well as the unfair bailouts and rampant corruption.

There are good things and bad things about all places, but on balance, this is a beautiful country and the people are mostly civilised and decent. It's a bit like entering a time warp. One thing I really noticed is that they haven't sold out to globalisation and neo-liberal policies that have destroyed the fabric of other countries.

nothing saterical about it at all

matter of fact.

another fact is that no matter what people say, the right thing to do is stay in England, home of your birth and defend it. If your leaving because of Chavs then your a looser, you failed, they won and now theres one less obstacle in their path and one less decent person to represent what is right. If you leave because of the politics then your a looser for not getting involved and sorting things out. People that run away are loosers. only the stoic deserve righteous position. Cowards deserve left overs.

The battle was lost a long time ago. The people in charge are squeezed into such a minority that the tide will never change. They will cling to what they have at the expense of the general state of the nation. By transforming the state of the nation they will maintain their control and their position and be happy ever after. Ah bless!

I left the UK to Switzerland at the start of the year. I am well conditioned after 30 years in the UK that I would not lift a finger (well perhaps one) for anyone. "Let 'em rot" and "Me Me Me" is all you get in London. Over here there is community and people actually care about each other. I saw that once as a kid in Gloucestershire. I cannot remember anything of that ilk in the last 10 years. Good luck in changing the state. Think you've got a few hurdles, but good luck.

The actor Richard Burton once wrote an article for the New York Times about his experience playing the role of Winston Churchill a television drama:

" in the course of preparing myself..... I realized afresh that I hate Winston Churchill and all of his kind. I hate them virulently. They have stalked down the corridors of endless power all through history..... what man of sanity would say on hearing of the atrocities committed by the Japanese against British and Anzac prisoners of war, "we shall wipe them out, every one of them, men, women, and children. There shall not be a Japanese left on the face of the earth"? Such simpleminded cravings for revenge leave me with a horrified but reluctant awe for such single-minded and merciless ferocity.

Ok, I can live with that.

By the way, does this sound familiar: "Dont want to return to evil crappy england, total downer." If it doesn't ring a bell, may I point you to your sig - "My House In Tampa Florida That I Bought For $14,900".

I do hope you dont upset anyone else as patriotic as your good self.

It means I can buy up the houses cheap and rent then to Rajif.

And there is the proof (well, a bit of it) of why I'm more than happy to leave you to it.

I was one of the first Gen-Xers - most that went before me are the last of the boomers. And I have to say that the GenXers have been royally shafted by the boomers. Like I keep saying this is well-planned and co-ordinated inter-generational theft.

More a miserable moaner more than a Gen-Xer. Theft? You do make me laugh.

I realise irony can be difficult to spot when typed online, but that one was pretty obvious..

I'm gonna stay for a bit, see how things pan out. Would need to do a lot more travelling before figuring out if I'd want to live elsewhere anyway.
