All those offered on Yahoo with the exception of the FocusCC are dinosaurs. The market sub £5k is buoyant and sub £2k for small cars it's on fire.I just spotted a "51" plate Micra at the side of the road with a £1995 label on it. 36k miles and looking straight out of the box.Knocked on the guy's door and forced 1800 of our English into his hand. Trade book tells me it's worth a grand to buy £1400 to sell...dream on. £2695 all day long.

Whoa I have a 51 plate micra with 15000 miles on it if anyone is interested, open to offers, as new. I need to sell it so I can slap a deposit on a Ducati 996

BBC car news december

Good deals will be here soon, but I think the OP is hoping for far more than is feasible

The problem with the media is that all their so called "experts" are people like Quent,or the Torygraph's Honest John who have gone native and swapped a good wholesome trade (irony alert!) for the filthy lucre of Grub Street. They all purport to offer good advice but in reality are so out of touch with what is happening out on the lots and auctions that they really don't have a hope.

Quent wheels out a "Y" reg Ka for £1400,40k miles and a "nice little car". I sold an "X" last week for £2275 and it was on sale for less than 24 hours.HJ told a punter recently that £1500 for an X reg VW Lupo was £500 too dear.A dealer near me has £2495 on the screen of a "V" reg.I E mailed this clot and said bring me as many as you can find at £1500,naturally no reply.

Good points. Toyota are renowned for having expensive parts, but many believe you need less of them. However, I doubt anyone would expect to do 20k miles a year in a Micra.

If you're doing 20k p.a. you're one of the few who really would benefit from running a diesel car. Many of them have 20k service intervals nowadays, which, personally, I think is too many, but would satisfy the service history fans.

I can see demand dropping 90% for new cars. A depression will do nasty things for confidence and demand.

I have a 53 plate Avensis 1.8 S Auto (paid 5300 for it almost 2 years ago from a maindealer with a 1 year warranty) with 76k on it and, so far, the only trouble I have had is misting up head lights to the point one burned out. I owned many Toyotas in the US and found them reliable and cheap to service. In the UK, Toyota are one stage removed from the game. The distributors determine pricing and servicing costs and the Factory do not like it. I do not go near a Toyota dealer for servicing for this reason.

Gibson guitars recently broke free of their UK distributor and now sell direct to dealers and the cost has fallen dramatically even with the falling pound.

The 3 tier system in the UK sucks. Its why we pay so much more for many things.

Hey RB.

Thats rather good news. Rosetti wasnt it? I assumed Gibsons Fenders and Rickys would soar due to the dollar.

Point me to a shop thats doing deals on new ES335s. Im in the market for a nice cherry red dot neck.

Ive decided to have a spend up before we're all vaporised!

There is almost sense in a young driver having a new car because they will often throw in insurance free. This can be £2k plus for a 17 y.o. so the depreciation pays for the insurance and you have a warranty to run it for peanuts. Result.

Unfortunately, they usually need finance :(

You would be amazed just how many parents turn up,cheque book in hand, ready to buy 17 year old offspring a car, only to be told "I don't want a blue one" or "those are really gay dad".I saved half my pay packet for three months to buy a clapped out oil burning grey mini with rattly drive shafts. This must be the parents fault. What next tickets to Jade's funeral selling for a grand? I really despair.

In 1995, I bought my younger sister an old mini after she passed her test, it was 12 y.o. and cost £450. Those were the days! She hit a bollard on an icy road 2 weeks later and wrote it off. :( (Pride hurt only)

I digress, my point is she was chuffed with it, wasn't bothered about colour (it was beige  ), engine size or stereo, just wanted a mini. Youngsters should be grateful for ANY car but it does give them a huge leap in independence.

The "made in Japan" Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass has risen in price from £679 to £900 in 4 months on GAK Centre's website. Most US Fenders have also risen in price quite dramatically recently.

When people don't have credit available £2-3k becomes £2-3k they don't have, nor are they able to raise it easily.

If in these tough times folks are going to be running older cars DIY mechanics is gonna be making a come back.

I'm buying shares in whoever publishes Haynes Manuals now (maybe it's still Haynes I dunno) and PYO scrap yards. . Those were the days, Sunday mornings spent scavenging parts off a Vauxhall Chevette perched on top of a stack of 5 cars swaying gently in the breeze.

Mind I cant see many gen Y metrosexuals fancying changing their brake pads on some side street in the rain can you?

The problem you are going to have is the diagnostics. We have spent £5k on a machine and we still have to take about 10% of problems to a main dealer. This is only going to get wiorse and the customer is faced with a £50+VAT bill as soon as they plug his car in.

staggering when you think how stoopid folk still are, no disrespect but it's such a dinosaur business model isn't it, they might as well just go and by a car then turn up at yours and give you 700 quid for nothing.

I'm amazed by this also, most traders only want to throw a bucket of water of the car before slapping £500 on to the asking price. They don't earn their money imo.All the cars I have sold in the past have been serviced and detailed which makes them more attractive to potential punters and increases the value of the car.

For most popular makes you can buy the diagnostic software yourself. E.G. For VAG cars (Skoda, Seat, VW, Audi, etc) you can buy a basic copy of VAG COM + a cable for less than £100 and never trouble your main dealer for diagnostic info again.

Many smaller garages seem to be specialising in a few marques and buying these tools.

New cars dont rust..they are covered in so much crap (ie. laquers, etc..), after they are built, that they are prepared for storage when they come off the ship, or where ever..

A family member works for a transporter firm, and he's been asked to pull out unregistered Fords & Vauxhalls out of hedges, that have sat in fields for five years. Theyre excellently preserved. There's only a bit of moss on them, which can be pressure washered off...these cars are then sold as new..and the customers wouldnt suspect it.. I can imagine the same thing happening five years from now.. Newer models wont be developed, due to the severe backlog of existing cars that are still about..

The rust starts when they hit the roads. Fords have and always will be particularly bad for this, I can't understand why people go crazy over the Focus for this reason.

Frankly, I think parents are flat out insane to buy their offspring a new car. As a fairly new driver myself (2 years now), I wouldn't have wanted to be put behind the wheel of something that was actually worth something when I first ventured out on to the roads. The thought of having a serious accident due to lack of experience is bad enough, but adding the thought of destroying £8000 through a careless mistake as well s rather more pressure than I'd like.

No, I'm quite happy with my R reg Corsa, which doesn't mind if it picks up the occasional ding or scrape. Not that I've put any on it mind, but plenty of other people have. On top of that, it's considerabley more fun than the modern edition of the same car. Quicker, more nimble, lighter, and doesn't cost the earth to fix because there's no on-board computer that only a registered dealer can decode.

But sadly she's not going to pass her next MOT, so it's time to go shopping.
